Do you sometimes struggle to hear what's said on TV? We're running an experiment to find out how wide-spread problems with TV audio are. If you have half an hour, click here to take part:

Follow up: One of the papers I resubmitted after an R&R where I had to write a 6,300 word memo was rejected. One of the reviewers decided that the language and paper structure that he (it is probably a he) suggested that we use last time wasn't good enough, and that we should rewrite the whole thing again.

In case you're wondering what my first experience at Sociological Perspectives was like:

  1. All R&Rs, no matter how much work needs to be done, must be returned within 60 days. The editor is sometimes willing to give you a 3 or 4 day extension, and that's it.
  2. The reviewers (I had) are micromanagers who want to rewrite the paper for you, and in at least one case, will forget what they told you to do the last time.
  3. The editor gives no guidance whatsoever.

Dang it. I always forget the questions I need to post during certain hours because the academics here mostly seem to be online during those hours.

I wish there were an built-in scheduling tool here for situations like this.

@academicchatter I'm thinking anti-ableist, anti-racist, anti-sexist, etc.

Actual inclusive as possible for us to achieve online conference-planning. Pushing the date far enough out that we can do this without stressing the hell out and with enough time to fundraise for ASL interpreters, captioning, etc.

The marketing fluff doesn’t, but they actually did increase upload speeds. Mine went from 10 to 20 up. And here is the DSL reports forum thread from when this round started.

Also, they are testing larger increases. I could get 100 up today, if I had a supported modem.

So, check your actual plan and modem to see what you have now.

None that article, but check my other reply and check your plan. You may be pleased, I was.

It seems deeply wrong and ironic that, as an English Teacher, I find World Book Day one of the most awful days of the year in school - and yet...

hlseward OP ,
@hlseward@mstdn.social avatar

@YLee Yes and yes - and that all sounds super noble and admirable. In reality, it becomes an expensive competitive fancy dress comp where staff and students dress as entirely non-book related characters (films/superheroes etc.) and it does nothing to encourage a genuine love of reading. You want your child to read? Buy them a book! @bookstodon @edutooters

I wasn't aware of the cosplay aspect to it. Reading is probably a little too quiet and internal for modern society. There has to be some lavish, external (read: Instagram-worthy) display to get people interested.

How capitalism violates the most boring and obvious principle of justice and treats people like things - "Inalienable Rights: Part I The Basic Argument"

Capitalism violates the principle that legal and de facto responsibility should match in the employer-employee contract.

This is also the advantage of public broadcasting - they can put more emphasis on that sort of thing without worrying about profit.

All of which is to say, support your public broadcasters, people!

Performance reviews are just employers controlling the narrative when employees are underpaid

Right?
If you underperform, brutal negotiations ensue … prove your value or the deal is off.

Buuut, if you’re overperforming, you get gold stickers and praise, and the possibility of a pay bump through a process controlled by the employer …

instead of you telling the employer that they have to prove their value or the deal is off.

Instead over performing then becomes the expectation.

@workreform @maegul It is really hard to objectively rate people. On an assembly line if you keep up with the line you are as good as everyone else, if you hold the line back are you worse or does the line need redesign? If you are an engineer it can be years before we discover how many mistakes you made. If you are a salesman did you miss your numbers because the economy is bad or because you are bad?

henfredemars ,

If we hire 10 people, 2 will be in the bottom 20%, even if they are meeting their responsibilities.
