YSK that if you live alone and have a pet, you should carry a card in your wallet to notify the appropriate people of your pet's existence.

Why YSK: There are a lot of people these days living alone with pets and if anything happened to the owner, others may not know to attend to the pet. If something happened to you, a coma, an accident, death, etc, your wallet would be the first place anyone would look for info about you and it would probably be the fastest way to bring attention to your small loved ones.

I have so many critters and I tell people about them constantly. Still gonna make a card. Well, prolly more than one. I don’t think all my animals could fit on one. I have 2 dogs, 2 cats, and 12 ducks. They are all my children and I love them more than myself.

I don’t know why this never occurred to me. I’m adding one now.

I show my coworkers new pet pics almost daily because they seem to be genuinely interested in my menagerie. Especially the ducks lol. They’re from urban and suburban areas, so they’ve never really known someone who likes farming before.

gdog05 ,

I’m impressed by the idea that people can still afford to live alone.

A tent outside is still living alone

lauha ,

As an american that would impress you. Not every country is the same.

But then you don’t really live alone if you have a pet. Checkmate!

Actually a good idea. Lol

There are a few of us now…but I’m trying to be nice.

Aren’t you making too big of a fuss over simple humor

Oh trust me, everyone that knows me is well aware I have a cat. Whether they wanted to know or not.

This seems like a good idea for all pet owners. My family and friends would think of my pets eventually, but it might not be the first thing on their minds.

I have a beagle, so I’d have the cops show up if he started baying for extended amounts of time. I’m surprised I haven’t had noise complaints already. Lil dude struggles with anxiety and will occasionally scream until I give him trazadone. When he was smaller and too young for meds, he would scream for hours. Nothing could comfort him. Poor boi had a rough start to life.

They also make windows tickers that say “in case of emergency we have xyz pets”. Good to stick one next to the front door.

Yeah – if there’s a fire or some other kind of emergency at your house/apartment and you’re not there, that kind of sticker is really important.

    hth ,

This assumes you have no friends or family. OP, are you ok?

    Norgur ,

exactly what I thought. If you get incapacitated in one way or another... someone has to notice that there's a pet. Just... someone

    RvTV95XBeo ,

This is the point of an emergency contact, is it not? Hopefully you choose one who knows enough about you to know whether or not you have pets.

    Norgur ,

    exactly.

    fosiacat ,

in fairness, my family lives 6 states away, and my friends would still take a few days before anyone noticed something was up.

Oh wow. I can’t imagine living so far from family. 30 mins was my maximum amount of drive time away from my family. I ended up getting a house that’s 20 mins away.

I can’t imagine living 30 minutes from my family.

I would say my first reaction to hearing my parent is dead/severely wounded would not be to look at home how the dog is doing but how my parent is doing or grieve.
After maybe 2 or 3 days I would maybe have a clear enough mind to think about a pet, that’s not even mine.
