YSK that you can autofill custom fields in Bitwarden (and likely other password managers)

cross-posted from: lemmy.ca/post/25072627 ( !til )

Sometimes a login page will have an additional field on top of the username and password (ex. last name, account number). This is often the case with things like banks, insurance, or government accounts.

I usually use Bitwarden to populate the username and password, then fill in the other field manually. Turns out, you can autofill those fields too:

  1. Right click in the field
  2. Select Bitwarden > copy custom field name

Then enter that as the name for the custom field.

Up till now, I was using custom fields to store additional information about the webpage. This will make things easier :)

Thanks, I hope I remember this if this ever is relevant to me.

And here's just a bit of a security warning re: autofil

TisI ,

Isn’t this for a browser’s autofill? I don’t have enough knowledge on the subject, but even though it can be vulnerable, it isn’t as bad as browsers?

Suspiciousbrowsing ,

Yes this is correct, however I think the security risk still rings true for any auto fill in that you have to presume any information entered into an auto fill template can be accessed by any website you use that function

Zwiebel ,

Bitwardens autofill can be disabled and then triggered manually with a click or ctrl+shift+L when you want to login

I did know this already, but it’s easily forgotten as it isn’t common to need it. I find banking sites are the main place this is useful, as they ask for all sorts of extra information.

HubertManne ,

thanks. not sure if I will ever use it but hopefully I remember about it if I need to.

DarkThoughts ,

I honestly cannot remember when I had to frequently or even semi-frequently fill out any sort of custom field. Sounds like an extreme edge case scenario or something to very specific user niches.

HjST ,

I don’t know if it is just one site I use or simply a limitation, but I have found that custom fields don’t seem to work on mobile.

otter OP , (edited )

I’ve been having some issues on mobile recently. I just tried it myself and the custom fields aren’t working for my site either

edit:

as per this comment in the original post, it doesn’t work on mobile:

WingedObsidian ,

Been trying to figure that out! Thank you so much for the tip!

yggdar ,

That’s really useful to know. Thank you for sharing!

otter OP ,

I wasn’t sure which community this was more appropriate for, so I posted in both!
