Well, more people for the Fediverse then.

Creators! Please come to the Fediverse! You can't forever rely on corporate platforms. I was there when Facebook got enshittified, now Twitter tries to speed run it. And no, Elon was never a good guy, and he didn't make the electric car.

FIST_FILLET ,

if this was implemented in late 2015 before everything on twitter turned to facebook lunatic EggAvatar284759472738 shit, i would have been in favor. but now it’s like slapping a band-aid on a cracked skull. too little, too late, musk is a redditor, etc

SSUPII ,

If it wasn’t to get the $1 they would refund it, like any company that wants to go the extra step to block bots by allowing the credit card for one account only.

I wonder if the real reason is an incentive not to erase your “free” account.

I highly doubt that X is getting new users besides people that left trying to go back.

Fiivemacs ,

I’m sure it’s to kill the social aspect so people stay in the dark and not openly share information on these pricks…

webghost0101 ,

If its against AI scrapping i am not sure what this will do to stop any of it. 1 dollar is a very low price to gain access to valuable data and many will gladly pay it for a bot. It only takes a single bot to open the profile of a list of users to then copy paste and store all that data elsewhere in a local document.

Neither will it stop scammer bots that are much more profitable then that cost.

The only kind of bot that would be stopped are the are fun hobby projects that don’t generate value.

Another week, another mind boggling announcement from X, formerly Twittter.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

X, formerly Twitter, announced today that is starting a new experiment to charge a $1 per year fee for “new unverified” users to interact with posts.

The company said this test is currently live in New Zealand and the Philippines and existing users won’t be affected.

The company’s support account clarified that this “Not A bot” program is not a profit driver — but it’s hard to take reason at face value.

“This new test was developed to bolster our already successful efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform, and bot activity while balancing platform accessibility with the small fee amount.

On its support page, the company said it will share the results about how the program’s effectiveness to battle spam.

The move comes after Musk said that X is planning to charge users “a small monthly payment” to use its service.
