It’s just messed up messaging. Germany will continue to deliver all the aid that was promised and they might add new aid, but the financing will be different.

At this point it is necessary to mention Germany provides a lot.

Also to mention, maybe Germany gov should change their Pr department. These kinds of things have now became a pattern.

as a german, I totally agree. Also adding more scrutiny, and perhaps fining for lies or half-lies, regarding reporting on these topics by public media couldn’t hurt.

Specifically the funding will come from frozen Russian assets, which many people requested since the moment they were frozen. But now for some reason some newspapers found a way to bury it under clickbait titles.

future funding would no longer come from Germany’s federal budget but from proceeds from frozen Russian assets, according to the German newspaper.

Have we reached the phase we are giving Ukraine weapons as loans to put them into massive debt and then the IMF swoops in to colonize their country?

mathemachristian ,

What do you think the euromaidan demonstrations were (in part) about? A massive IMF loan.

I am an immigrant in Germany and I have C2 German, but reading the news makes me doubt that. I swear there were articles saying legalization of marijuana was certain, then off the table, then up for vote, then failed, and then it happened but there wasn’t much news about that.

This is related to the Nord pipeline, right? I remember an analyst telling that Ukraine’s win is dependant on Germany, and now that is most likely not going to happen. What’s funny is that Olaf does not have the guts to call out Norway and the USA, who were also very strongly involved in this, and instead has a warrant for the Ukrainians.

alcoholicorn ,

Honestly I’m amazed it took this long for some blowback for blowing up infrastructure the very allies we’re begging to support our war depend on for heating.

LarkinDePark ,

This is just a load of horseshit designed to give the west a way out of this failed war of America’s.

L3dpen ,

Or you could read the article and see that’s not even remotely the issue, and the title is as per usual misleading.

Germany planned 8 billion eur financial support for Ukraine this year. That’s been used up. So, no more monetary (!) aid unless they find some spare change in the budget, which they won’t.

And to preempt the next headline: Germany’s spending next year on Ukraine will be halved, yes… Because there’re plans for an international fund.

Also while “Olaf” is the one naying further spending, he’s not doing so independently of the ruling coalition. He has little agency.

Obligatory fuck Lindner and fuck the FDP.

sfera ,

No, it’s not related to that.

Good, send them actual aid and not weapons to their government.

Podunk ,

Im reluctant to ask, but i feel obligated to do so. what in your mind is the difference in this scenario?

I feel your reasoning will tell alot. Lets go.

LarkinDePark ,

You don’t know the difference between weapons used for terrorist attacks on civilians and food and medical aid for civilians?

sweng ,

What about weapons not used for terrorist attacks?

Also, sonething tells me a hoard of russian soldiers will not turn aroud by throwing bread at them.

Ukraine government is just as much corrupted as the government of germany, france, italy or russia. Have you seen climate activists and protesters getting beaten over there? Sending billions on military aid to an authoritarian government that is trying to conscript everyone isn’t a good thing.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobilization_in_Ukraine#202…

“As of 26 April 2024, the Polish government has offered, and the Lithuania governments is considering, repatriating Ukrainian men living in their countries to Ukraine. So that they can be drafted into the Ukrainian military. It is a “rough estimate” that some 300-400,000 men alone are living in Poland”

This is part of how the polish government is aiding ukraine. Don’t you think it would be better to give these escaping the war aid and hospitality instead of handling them back to their government?

norimee ,

I find these headlines all misleading.

Germany discusses for weeks now the next year’s federal budget and the ruling parties are at odds about spending and accumulation of new debts. And they agreed now, that future Ukraine aid will not come out of the federal budget.

All already approved aid to Ukraine will still be delivered. Nothing is “halted”.

All new aid, to be approved for the next fiscal year will not come from the federal budget but will be financed with seized Russian assets.

So, Germany doesn’t stop Ukraine aid at all. They just have to finance it differently in the next year.
