It should be noted that China does have same sex civil union since 2017 (except Hong Kong if I get that right), and by all evidence complete marriage recognition is coming soon.
Neither are recognised by law in Hong Kong. That said, same sex couples do not get harassed by law enforcement, bigots, or religious nutters. So while their relationship isn’t anointed by the registry office they are otherwise free to love who they want to love without fear.
