I wonder what happens if they discover people who have been granted asylum on the basis of bribes. I hope they don’t deport them automatically.

Also, I always forget that this is how the UK refers to members of the non-ruling party

Shadow Immigration Minister Stephen Kinnock

Had to open the article, as it reads a man was arrested for selling his house. The man was an immigration official selling an approval for asylum.

BBC News NI has spoken to the intended victim, who we are calling Renas to protect his identity.

What a bizarre choice of name.

Apparently it’s Kurdish, so they wanted to imply to a small number of people that the person is a Kurd?

essell ,

Whilst I can see how people might infer that, I doubt there was any desire to imply any ethnicity

If that wasn’t the desire, it’s a very odd name to choose. Did they just use a random name picker?

Is there any name that isn’t connected to a specific culture and wouldn’t trigger that reaction in some people?

Probably not. I didn’t mean to even suggest it would be a negative reaction necessarily. I just thought it was a very odd name choice and speculated as to why.
