I’d argue that the voting system is not a democracy, not even an unstructured one; it’s simply mob rule. That isn’t just mincing words - a mob rule is effectively ruled not by the people, but by demagogues who are able to sic them against today’s target.
Still convenient for simple stuff like keeping trolls at bay in an online forum, sure. But we need to keep in mind the limitations.
