OSAKA – Japanese electronics maker Sharp has decided to suspend operations at an LCD panel plant in Sakai, Osaka, run by its subsidiary Sakai Display Products by the end of September, Nikkei has learned.
As the panel business losses for TVs continues, the company has decided to halt production by September when there will be sufficient inventory to meet supply commitments to TV manufacturers.
In an effort to reduce staff making panels, the company is also looking into sending workers from Sharp Display Technology (SDTC), which is headquartered in Kameyama City, Mie to a chip manufacturer affiliated with Sony Group.
As with TVs, the transition from LCD screens to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays has been underway for smartphones and tablets – especially high-end models.
As the market shrinks, fierce price competition has broken out between Chinese and Korean panel giants.
According to DSCC, a U.S. research company, capacity utilization at Hakusan, one of three SDTC plants that mainly supplies Apple, was under 50% in 2023.
