Still blows my mind that Roddenberry hated the script for ā€œFamilyā€ and wanted it thrown away. Like itā€™s great that humanity has evolved past most interpersonal conflict. Picard has PTSD as he should for what he went through. Same reason for his perspective in ā€œI, Borgā€ and ā€œFirst Contact.ā€ He is damaged. His scene with Sisko in ā€œThe Emissaryā€ is so great because Picard feels like he deserves Siskoā€™s animosity. ā€œFamilyā€ is one of my favorite episodes. Right up there with ā€œDuetā€ and ā€œItā€™s only a paper moonā€ for showing the emotional cost of war.

Sci-fi shows have moments that weirdly hit really hard.

This scene is one for me.

In Stargate Atlantis when Dr McKay loses his memory in a similar way to alzheimers, I lost my shit.

Warehouse 13 s3e11. running up that hill plays quietly in the background

Sliders has several. Eureka, Farscape, quantum leap, futurama, Battlestar Galactica, firefly, fringe, the list goes onā€¦

I feel the pain that Data feels upon losing his daughter.

rynzcycle ,

In the first episode of Picard, playing chess with Data... "Because I don't want the game to end." Man, on so man levels, it was a few weeks before I could even say that line without getting choked up.

I grew up as a little boy watching every TNG with my dad, I don't want the game to end either.

I love how the Ent D restoration was Geordiā€™s mid life garage project.

    I laughed at titanic.

You want to talk moments that kicked you in the soul? Lore saying ā€œI love youā€¦ brotherā€ as Data is deactivating him.

Maybe it just hits too close to home after being in a similar situation with my own evil brother. But thatā€™s one of those moments that always catches me off guard. Especially since the rest of the episode isnā€™t all that great, so itā€™s easy to let your guard down.

While Iā€™m feeling nostalgic, hereā€™s a few other honorable mentions in the ā€œI wasnā€™t prepared to feel emotions todayā€ category:

    • Ivanova after getting healed - Babylon 5
    • I didnā€™t count on being happy - Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
    • Demonaā€™s password - Gargoyles

    S5E25: The Inner Light.

I won't spoil it if you haven't watched it yet.

    MentallyExhausted ,

Think this is from ā€œFamilyā€ with his brother right after Best of Both Worlds.

    Hyperreality , (edited )

Fun fact. The Picard theme was inspired by Inner Light. Not the main theme, but the theme his son plays.

Wow I recognized it the moment it played. Whoever decided to do that for the theme song gets a gold star.

ā€œFamilyā€ s4e2. Admittedly, havenā€™t rewatched this one for years. Could use a little gut punch.

    Pickle_Jr OP ,

It has a great effect if you binge The Best of Both Worlds while stoned right before it too. Can confirm.

Taking your advice. Forgot about Shelby. Very full circle. Thanks for the tip.
