"Pick up and play" portable games?

I am an avid retro gaming fan. I mostly play JRPG games like Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger but recently I’ve had very little time to enjoy big, complicated games. I find there are some retro titles that have been eclipsed by their sequels, what are some that hold up better than their later iterations in your opinion.

My title of choice would probably be Daggerfall because it’s just so ambitious and truly offers an experience none of the other elder scrolls games offer. That being said it is kinda an example of a sequel eclipsing it’s predecessors as well given it is more or less a straight improvement over Arena in every way.
