I'm thinking about Mastodon in a wide view, in the world of social media, this feels a little outsider, while at the same time it also feels like it might be the future. So, let's talk about it!
What do you get out of Mastodon?
Why are you here?
How has it compared with your other social media experiences?
What do you see for the future of Mastodon?
What do you want to see?
And basically anything else about it you want to say about Mastodon.
LET'S TALK!
@RickiTarr I'm here because I want a better alternative to centralised social media, but so far the content discovery on this platform has been tremendously difficult
@Waiting4Thunder@Gust3r@RickiTarr I've been here a coupla minutes and I still have no idea what the hashtags mean or when to use them. I'm just gonna continue to refresh the screen, blink occasionally, and honk when something strikes me to do so.
But also, you care to share just what's actually going on here and how to use it to better tickle my brain?
@mambearpnw One of the best ways you can use hashtags (other than sticking them on the end of your posts) is that you can follow them like people. Some communities will coalesce around unusual ones (ex: people who ride bikes use #BikeTooter , people who take photos of moss use #Mosstodon). What people tag can vary wildly in specificity, and they are only "discoverable" if the post is public. This post is unlisted so I don't spam people who follow those tags.
@mambearpnw Maybe? With the new search feature you might be able to just search for Holly or Stephen King, but the #Holly or #StephenKing hashtags will work if someone used them. I don't get many hits on the first, but I get plenty for the second.
If you're a reader you can follow #Bookstodon or the auto-boosting group @bookstodon (this makes it easier to find people who use the hashtag), people love to talk books with those.
@RickiTarr I came here b/c I missed the book community I had found on instagram (when IG was a better place). My experience has been good, I’d still like to find more book people. I love that this place seems to be growing. The lack of an algorithm, ads, & that reels aren’t shoved down my throat is refreshing. There are some really lovely people here 😊
