Thumbs up for genocide

Cope and seethe troll

sharkfucker420 ,
@sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml avatar

How is this trolling? Do you not know where that quote comes from?

can ,

What quote?

WorkIsSlow , (edited )

“I’m speaking.”

She has used this multiple times, but most recently it was to shut down people protesting the genocide of palestinians.

Edit: Who’s downvoting my factual and verifiable answer to their question?

GBU_28 ,

Was the message/mission of those interrupting her material in why she said “I’m speaking”? I would assume she was holding an official press conference or something, and it was her turn to speak and it was not being honored.

If my assumption is wrong, I’m happy to revise my opinion of it.

If my assumption is right, it’s just people with hurt feelings who couldn’t wait their turn to speak (as this assumption requires that it was harris’ turn to speak.)

WorkIsSlow ,

Describing people begging for a genocide to stop as just having hurt feelings and being impatient is a wild approach.

Protests aren’t supposed to be silent. That’s the entire point and the only way to get anything done. If Harris was already campaigning on a ceasefire they would have nothing to protest about and she wouldn’t be interrupted. These are constituents making their voices heard.

GBU_28 , (edited )

Were they protesting or at a press conference? That’s my point.

If she was addressing an active protest, then they had every right to keep speaking, and as I said, I revise my opinion.

So, which was it?

Edit I’m specifically not addressing the context they are protesting, I’m focusing on the setting this phrase was said by her.

Separately, becayse this is Lemmy and people don’t seem able to separate concerns:

Her stance on Israel and Palestine is no good, and what’s happening in Palestine is genocide.

Edit edit a press conference is the specific and identified time for an official to speak. It is appropriate and mature to hear the statements said there, without interrupting.

A protest is the time for the general people to speak, and they should do so loudly and proudly.

WorkIsSlow ,

Protests are not effective if they can be ignored. THE ENTIRE POINT IS THAT IT ISN’T THEIR TURN TO SPEAK.

Edit: The politically adept way to answer protesters with a substantial base of support that you don’t want to alienate is to say, “I hear you.”

GBU_28 ,

Agree!

A press conference is not a protest! It’s specifically the time for an official to make a statement.

So, which was it? Who’s turn was it? That’s all I’m asking.

Was harris at a protest or was someone interrupting a press conference?

Edit if Harris was trying to talk over a protest, then I fully support the notion that this statement by her is trash! I said that from the beginning.

WorkIsSlow ,

It’s a protest at a press conference. When protesting its beneficial to take your message to the press and politicians. I’m not claiming it was their turn to speak because the entire point of a protest is taking a stand and making your voice heard even if it isn’t convenient.

Historically effective protest movements weren’t convenient for politicians.

I’m sorry, I had no idea this concept could be so alien to anybody.

sharkwellington ,

So to get this straight.

She was speaking, interrupted, took back her turn, and that’s what you’re upset about?

Would you rather go back to Biden who just sits there while other people talk over him?

WorkIsSlow ,

As I said earlier in the thread that you didn’t read or didnt understand, “The politically adept way to answer protesters with a substantial base of support that you don’t want to alienate is to say, ‘I hear you.’”

If she wants their votes she needs policy and actions that will win those votes.

sharkwellington ,

If she wants their votes she needs policy and actions that will win those votes.

I concede that is a good way to look at it and I did not originally interpret that as your intent. Apologies.

WorkIsSlow ,

My responses were brief. I should be more clear and less of a dick. I’m sorry for that.

can ,

Oh right. I actually heard about that but forgot when I saw OP. I don’t like the shirt anymore.

gross, why do you like genocide?

Thanks for letting us know it was the writer, nobody would've known who that guy was if you hadn't said.

I dunno, it could have been Film Director Stephen King, who only exists after Writer Stephen King snorts two lines of cocaine.

ShinkanTrain ,

It’s really funny that

a) A line where she tells anti-genocide protesters to shut up is being celebrated as a moment

b) Dems suck so much at campaigning they still gotta use the 2008 Obama Hope poster cause it was the last time they actually resonated with people

corroded ,

Not going to comment on a), but b) kind of makes sense to me. Her campaign feels very much like Obama’s. You have a candidate who is energetic, likeable, and generally seems like a decent person. You have someone who people want to vote for instead of just voting against the other guy. It makes sense they would try to draw parallels.

hate2bme ,

I have voted democrat since 2000. I really don’t feel that’s someone we “want” to vote for. That’s who we have. We didn’t get any other choice. She is ok but I really wish Walz was running for president instead.

shalafi ,

Yeah, it was a badass line, but not in context. I don’t blame her, a speaker has to read the room and control the crowd, but it doesn’t belong on a t-shirt.

As to b), I’ve bemoaned the Democrats for years and years, but you gotta admit, the Harris campaign is hitting on all 8 cylinders, finally showing the balls I’ve screamed at them to grow.

sub_ubi ,

You don’t blame her? What’s a lower bar than “No genocide”?

regul ,

Showing all the balls by immediately coming out to say no to Medicare for All, yes to the border wall, and yes to genocide.

This is the shit you like to see? Or is it perhaps that you believe in nothing and care only about aesthetics?

of all the fucking quotes, they went with this one for the t-shirt? the “genocide schmenocide” quote? literally the lowest point of an otherwise powerful campaign. very bad choice tbh.

qjkxbmwvz ,

I think it’s a reference to the vice presidential debate with Pence in 2020: cbsnews.com/…/kamala-harris-mr-vice-president-pen…

Could be wrong though.

WorkIsSlow ,

It likely is, but she most recently used the same phrase to shutdown pro-palestine protestors at a rally.

JimmyBigSausage OP ,

Actually, she acknowledged the protesters, and paused, and then proceeded to speak. It was a highlight. Women have been told to sit down and shut up for far too long. She was saying, this is my event, I have ideas and here they are. Listen to me. Loved it. Reminded me of Reagan saying I paid for this microphone.

pyre ,

yeah perfect. we want another Reagan surely

JimmyBigSausage OP ,

Not a repulikkkan one.

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

Is this supporting her or against her?

I don’t know if I should celebrate Stephen King or burn all his books that I’ve collected over the years.

TargaryenTKE ,

Pretty sure it’s an endorsement

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

Well I guess I have to go start a fire.

BigFatNips ,

/s ?

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,
DoctorButts ,

S-cup boobies, yeah

Sabin10 ,

You managed to read multiple King books and thought he was anything other than a left leaning liberal? Might as well burn them, it’s not like you understand them.

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

Stephen King is as conservative as Stephen Colbert used to be, back when he was funny.

TargaryenTKE ,

So…he’s satirically conservative? You do know Colbert has never ACTUALLY been a conservative right? You know that was the whole joke, right??? Either you have the media literacy of a toddler or I fell for the troll bait

naticus ,

If you fell for it, so did I, because yeah that was the whole damn point of Colbert’s act. He played devil’s advocate for entertainment. So was he funny to conservatives because they just never realized they were being mocked the entire time? Wow. I thought he laid it on pretty thick.

alcoholicorn ,

I think he’s saying that neither were ever conservative.

Sabin10 ,

Wow, you have the media literacy of a garden snail.

dditty , (edited )

To me it comes across as an intentionally lackluster endorsement.

Edit: obviously my read on this was bad, I thought “I’m talking” was just some random nonsensical phrase, but forgot about her debate with Pence when she said it. Either way, I wish there was a more inspiring tagline to the Kamala shirts.

TargaryenTKE ,

1-Like another comment said, if you’ve read any of his books you should know he’s quite liberal. Could this pic be just a photo op for online clout? Sure, maybe, but he definitely does NOT endorse Trump.

2-He’s 76 years old, I imagine most things he does nowadays are fairly lackluster

dditty ,
  1. Before I deleted my Twitter, I followed Stephen King for his sometimes funny clapbacks on there and because of his liberal politics. I don’t think it is a photo for clout at all, I think it’s his legitimate endorsement. I just had a whoosh moment about the slogan/tagline on the shirt.
  2. Everything in life is lackluster once you stop doing cocaine lmao, I know this intimately lol
Phineaz ,

I always wondered how people could talk or think about burning books and not consider themselves to be a villain. Wth, I probably wouldn’t even burn Mein Kampf or Mao’s red book and you want to burn novels you’ve enjoyed because the writer endorses a politician.

SatansMaggotyCumFart ,

Do you still listen to Lostprophets?

alcoholicorn ,

It’s pretty weird to put a pamphlet mostly educating rural peasants in 50s china on the political situation and fucking Mein Kampf on the same level.

TargaryenTKE ,

One was used to incite violence, the other was ABused to justify violence, they’re basically the same thing (/s)
