There have been multiple accounts created with the sole purpose of posting advertisement posts or replies containing unsolicited advertising.
Accounts which solely post advertisements, or persistently post them may be terminated.

Edit: the flagship instance is bookwyrm.social I think it’s worth noting that Mastodon is by far the most mature. Everything else is buggy and may not always work the way you might expect but I think many are still worth using if you can put up with the quirks.
