I go to an island

I plant a flag

I declare a new nation

I join the UN

Oh no, there’s been an alien attack

I “convince” world leaders to cede their sovereignty to the UN to unify and defeat the aliens

I “convince” the UN General Assembly to elect me as Secretary-General, since I have the most information on the alien attack and would be a great leader

I become Secretary-General in a totally legit election, totally no bribery or anything.

A battle breaks out against the aliens

We are winning

“Execute Order 666”

(I totally did not falsify the alien threat 😉)

The UN wouldn't do dick to stop the aliens. They'd probably try to engage in talks while every major city gets orbitally bombarded to dust.

NATO, on the other hand...fetch me my manhole cover.

There’s no time for democracy when we need unity. Elections are postponed until further notice. I’ll be the Secretary-General until we can safely hold new elections.

Alien attacks seems out of scope for the U.N. It’s for resolving conflicts between members, and the aliens are probably not members. Downvote if I’m wrong.

Realistically, that’s probably the best hope.

An alien race that can travel interstellar isn’t gonna have any difficulties just nuking us all.

I can count the amount of times diplomacy has saved a FTL civilisation from me in Stellaris on one Congolese hand (Belgian occupation times).
