alyaza , in Hyundai subsidiary has used child labor at Alabama factory
@alyaza@beehaw.org avatar

Reuters learned of underage workers at the Hyundai-owned supplier following the brief disappearance in February of a Guatemalan migrant child from her family’s home in Alabama.

The girl, who turns 14 this month, and her two brothers, aged 12 and 15, all worked at the plant earlier this year and weren’t going to school, according to people familiar with their employment. Their father, Pedro Tzi, confirmed these people’s account in an interview with Reuters.

makes you wonder how common this is in other plants and facilities, especially the ones with organizational disconnect between themselves and their parent companies. it’s sort of the worst kept secret in america that this under-the-table stuff is how a lot of agricultural jobs get filled (either by children or undocumented adults) and i’m sure this has to also be the case to a lesser extent for other not-desirable jobs like this

idle_american , in 'Best ever' UFO photo showing 100ft craft finally revealed after 30 years

It’s amazing how multiple major governments openly admitted that UFOs

  1. Are real and very common

  2. Seem to violate several laws of physics at least as we understand them

  3. Are metallic-appearing objects that react to the activities of other aircraft in a way that suggest they’re piloted, even if just in an autonomous or remotely-operated way

  4. Are sufficiently technologically advanced that they’re clearly not from our Earth

  5. Have a far bigger pool of video and photo evidence detailing their existence than the public currently has access to

And people still act like we don’t know if aliens are real? It’s literally like in science fiction stories where everyone on Earth discovers that aliens are real but for some reason seem to have forgotten it by the next time that aliens show up. Like this R*****t post for example old.reddit.com/…/what_do_you_think_is_the_probabi…

I feel like a crazy person. People call me a conspiracy theorist when I say “Aliens are real and the government essentially admitted it.” It’s just the truth. And I don’t think governments are good sources of information, but I don’t see what they would gain from lying about this, it seems perfectly believable to me that they’ve known about it for many decades but preferred to keep it under wraps for global security to prevent widespread panic during the Cold War, and I think that was probably the best call to make. You could say they released this information to manufacture a natsec scare, but if that’s the case, they’ve done a pretty terrible job at it considering how few people even seem to realize that this happened.

But this raises some questions. Why are they here? What are they doing? Has there been even limited contact between them and any human government? How long have they been here? Do they come from a single community or are there many different “theys” with different missions and motivations? They seem capable of a lot more than whatever they’re currently up to. We should probably be glad they’re just creeping on us without saying hello instead of destroying us out of fear or trying to convert us to their religion or get us hooked on Reticulan opioids so we become dependent on them.

  1. Are sufficiently technologically advanced that they’re clearly not from our Earth

As much as I want to believe (!), govs don’t acknowledge that. If it’s not plasma or optical phenomenon like Hessdalen lights, then there’s a chance it’s something else, but nothing says it’s clearly not from our earth.

idle_american ,

I remember a viral video that went around where a US general pretty explicitly said it’s “not terrestrial technology” or something along those lines. But you’re right, that also leaves open the explanation that it is terrestrial, just not technological, so I guess they haven’t explicitly admitted that. I also remembered the government had said that UAPs had played with and disabled, then reenabled US nuclear infrastructure in a way that seemed intentional during the Cold War, but I looked it up and that claim only comes from one guy who used to direct the DOD’s UAP observation program, not speaking on behalf of the government. Still, the way that they react to our aircraft pretty cleanly eliminates for me the idea that there’s a non-technological explanation for all of them.

I take the POV that given the size of the goddamn universe, to assume we are the only planet with life is the height of fucking hubris

NaibofTabr ,

OK, sure… do you know how much nothing there is out there? The gap between us and the nearest star is 4.25 lightyears

If there’s life out there, and they are capable of getting here, we don’t want them to come here. We don’t want to meet them. Imagine being an ant, and a human decides that they don’t want your anthill on their lawn… That’s basically where we’d be with them. If this is even remotely possible it is very bad news for us.

Taleya ,

Oh, the politics and ramifications of first contact is a whole 'nother kettle of fish, but i’m talking about the ridiculous concept that we are somehow the only intelligent life in the universe. Such horseshit.

At least something good happening this year.

alyaza , in Vietnam says homosexuality ‘not a disease’ in win for gay rights
@alyaza@beehaw.org avatar

The health ministry’s August 3 dispatch is being celebrated for its protection of queer Vietnamese in medical settings and as fuel for an ongoing petition for the legalisation of same-sex marriage. […] Based on this, and citing the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) removal of homosexuality and being transgender from the International Classification of Diseases, it goes on to outline five primary guidelines for the health system.

Education should be strengthened so all medical providers have correct knowledge about “lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people,” it says, and that queer people must be treated equally in medical environments. In addition, LGBTQ identity cannot be treated as a disease, while involuntary treatments are prohibited and mental health services can only be provided by experts on sexual orientation and gender identity. Lastly, supervision and inspection of medical facilities should be increased.

pretty substantial!

nothing particularly unorthodox if you’ve seen conservative salivating about police shootings before. mostly, it was just trying to justify why the police were correct to roll up and immediately shoot this guy, even though he hasn’t been tried or convicted on the crime they were arresting him for.

This is on Russia not Poland.

When there were people freezing near the border, that was on Poland as well.

CookieJarObserver ,
@CookieJarObserver@feddit.de avatar

No. They were in a country considered safe for civilians. There is no active war in Belarus. EU does not have to take anyone, we still do for endangered people, if we back down on that line there it will only get worse and the right wing people will get even more ground.

AngularAloe ,

Nope, absolutely disagree. People were being used as pawns and pushed towards the border by Belarus, where they were freezing and Poland would not let humanitarian aid or journalists reach them. Neither country’s government gave a shit about the value of human life.

Good. I think this is a dangerous time, though.

I can see him & other tearaway Tories setting up an even worse party and trying to bring over there diehards. Him and his cronies have tasted blood (read: stealing from and fucking the public) and in my opinion, that isn’t something they are going to want to give up completely.

General election can’t come soon enough.

Katana314 , in Reddit CEO doubles down on attack on Apollo developer in drama-filled AMA

Thing is, I’m kind of settled with the idea that Reddit will still win out monetarily with this. 99% of users are going to take the path of least resistance, which is kinda expected.

So my goal is more around just having a good conversational community, and I kinda like the change in pace now that I’m using alternatives. I don’t really focus on “Reddit losing”. I just like having a good place to chat. It might be funny to see if they end up reversing course, but I’m not losing sleep on that turnout.

setsneedtofeed ,
@setsneedtofeed@beehaw.org avatar

That is my feeling. I want Lemmy to be good, so I hope a lot of quality users jump ship from Reddit, but if Reddit retains the millions of passive users, then I’m happy for Reddit to keep them. One part of Reddit’s issue was the diluted quality of posts and comments, so let it continue to exist to filter people who want that experience. ___

mobyduck648 ,
@mobyduck648@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah it sounds harsh but once a subreddit got above 100k its quality inevitably took a nose dive unless this was actively moderated against which it usually wasn’t. Lurkers are fine in general but when the whole platform is mostly lurkers looking to doomscroll TikTok style rather the lurkers wanting to read (and upvote) decent high-effort content it all goes down the pan pretty quickly.

If Reddit’s role in the Fediverse is as a great big sponge to soak up the passive users who just want quick content then long live Reddit! Spez staying on as CEO and increasingly zombifying the platform is actually great for us because it will drive active users here and keep the passive users on Reddit.

Fapper_McFapper , in Trump Supporters’ Violent Rhetoric in His Defense Disturbs Experts

“I have a message tonight for Merrick Garland and Jack Smith and Joe Biden — and the guys back there in the fake news media, you should listen up as well, this one is for you,” Ms. Lake said. “If you want to get to President Trump, you are going to have go through me, and you are going to have to go through 75 million Americans just like me. And I’m going to tell you, most of us are card-carrying members of the N.R.A.” The crowd cheered.

Ms. Lake added: “That’s not a threat, that’s a public service announcement.”

WallaWallaWa ,
@WallaWallaWa@beehaw.org avatar

This is dangerous, but it’s tolerated, even encouraged, here. Contrast with Scotland, and the recent arrest of Nicola Sturgeon, Former First Minister, Scotland:

Her (Nicola Sturgeon) arrest also means the case is now active for the purposes of the Contempt of Court Act 1981.

It means everyone has to be careful about what they say to avoid potentially prejudicing any future trial.

This applies to politicians and members of the public on social media as well as broadcasters and newspapers and the rules around what can and cannot be said about this - or any other - case are interpreted much more strictly in Scotland than in some other parts of the world.

Scotland is not the United States, for example, where pundits merrily speculate about the guilt or innocence of a suspect long before the case goes anywhere near a jury.

Convictions for contempt of court can be punishable by up to two years in prison and/or an unlimited fine.

If the US would pivot and provide safeguards such as this, freedom of speech is still protected, but the wild, inflammatory remarks like Lake, Trump and others make would be squashed.
