poVoq , in Crypto offers Africans a ‘lifeline’ from inflation and corruption, say execs
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

This is complete BS. In reality crypto enables corruption on a scale unseen before.

tardigrada OP ,

@poVoq @Supercell

Complementary currencies have been in place for thousands of years in human history, and it was largely for the benefit of the societies and their individuals, for crisis development, transitional economies and/or commons-based communities.

Blockchain is a great tool for this kind of money. Saying something like the whole of the crypto world is a scam is a gross generalization that has nothing to do with reality, as much as fiat money isn't a scam because of the corruption, scandals and crises we have been experiencing in the fiat system.

If you want to bribe a person or something, then the least thing you need is a decentralized network like a blockchain where all the data is stored across the network on all nodes. Crypto "enables corruption on a scale unseen before" ?THIS is BS.

marx2k ,

But... also true. Are you suggesting that rypto doesn't make corruption much, much easier?

As interesting as the technology is, it was extremely overhyped and attracted the worst kind of people, who only wanted to gret rich quick".

The amount of crypto projects today is absurd. The scalability problems aren’t solved yet, but people keep pushing their “revolutionary” coins.

We reached a state where even technology enthusiasts and the ones who like the idea of decentralized money became weary of the blockchain environment.

rimlogger , in Super-rich warned of ‘pitchforks and torches’ unless they tackle inequality

The issue with revolutions is that while they tend to get rid of old elites, they create a new class of elites out of the top revolutionaries and the cycle just starts over again. Many communist revolutions were supposed to create these theoretically "equal" societies, but they just insert in a new ruling class.

Valmond ,

Yeah but what are the other possibilities? Let them become kings?

TheTrueLinuxDev ,

Theoretically, by wiping out the rich would create instability within the wealthy class, they wouldn't have the time or the means to herd the politicians to serve them or to effectively disrupt democracy.

The inheritance that kid collects would amounts to "Congratulation, you won the lottery, now what? You haven't own any corporation yet, know of anything about how to make connections with other politicians and wealthy class of people and so forth. You're pretty much on your own."

Like 70% of the time, those people wouldn't even bother with politic and would just spend the money vacationing where-ever in the world and having fun with the newfound wealth, not busy trying to disrupt democracy. People tend to be very shortsighted when they amasses huge wealth, in fact, according to some statistic, it ranges from 44% to 70% of people who gain huge amount of money end up losing it all within the next 5 years.

That amount of time would basically give the common people enough time to go about fixing the political system.

Hyperreality ,

Seperated for years.

Last I checked he's been linked to Laure Ferrari. Let's go on a wikipedia adventure:

Laure Ferrari (* 6 October 1979, Épinal, France) has been a close associate of former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, and has been working for several right-wing to far-right political organizations and parties, including the French nationalist party (Debout la France). Ferrari was head of the Institute for Direct Democracy in Europe (IDDE), a Eurosceptic think tank, which was accused in 2017 of having illegally diverted public money to the benefits of UKIP.[1] Ferrari was also founding member of "The Mouvement," together with Mischaël Modrikamen and his wife Yasmine Dehaene-Modrikamen,[2] which in 2018 was joined and promoted by Steve Bannon.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laure_Ferrari

Mischaël Modrikamen (born 22 February 1966)[1] is a Belgian right wing politician and lawyer. ... In March 2015, Modrikamen was invited on an official visit to Russia by the Russian government and met officials at the Duma. Modrikamen, himself a strong believer in the transatlantic alliance, nevertheless announced that "we" should find some accommodation with Russia on the Crimea and Ukraine crisis. ... Modrikamen is the only Belgian political leader to have endorsed Trump, and this from the early beginning of his campaign among Republican contenders.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mischa%C3%ABl_Modrikamen

Reuters reported on October 31, 2018, that the Senate Intelligence Committee is conducting a "wide-ranging" investigation of Bannon's activities during the campaign, including knowledge he may have had about any contacts between Russia and two campaign advisors, George Papadopoulos and Carter Page, as well as his role with Cambridge Analytica.[148] ... In August 2020 members of the senate intelligence committee told the DOJ they believed that Bannon, Jared Kushner, and Donald Trump Jr. may have misled them with their testimony about Russia investigation. ... Bannon has defended Trump's ties to and praise for Russian president Vladimir Putin.[357][372] He expressed a belief that traditionalists see Russia as an ally. Bannon said they "believe that at least Putin is standing up for traditional institutions, and he's trying to do it in a form of nationalism—and I think that people, particularly in certain countries, want to see the sovereignty for their country. They want to see nationalism for their country" rather than a "pan-European Union".[372] According to the book War for Eternity, Bannon met notorious Russian ideologue Aleksandr Dugin in Rome in 2018 to advocate closer relations between the United States and Russia, as well as Traditionalist philosophy ... [etc. etc. etc. etc.]

It's disturbing how much evidence exists that all these right wing parties and politicians are Russian shills, yet it somehow seems to keep escaping common knowledge.

VanillaGorilla ,

Nah, thanks. We don't want him. Maybe if he doesn't like life in UK he should try death in UK? I heard it's beautiful.

IAmWiking , in Nigel Farage is now considering whether “life was worth living” in the UK.

As it says in the article, he's been designated a PEP because he allegedly took money from the Russian government. He denies this but hasn't sued the person making the allegation. Even in his rant on GB news he lists Ukraine first as a potential state known for bribery. He excuses Russian actions at every turn, it's clear he's getting something from them.

tal ,
@tal@kbin.social avatar

He denies this but hasn't sued the person making the allegation

Setting aside the issue of whether-or-not he has received money, I don't think that it's a great idea to make the expected norm for someone to sue someone else if they're innocent of something that someone claims that they did. Kind of results in everyone running around with lawyers on hair-trigger.

Anomandaris ,
@Anomandaris@kbin.social avatar

Between normal people, or even minor celebrities, I would absolutely agree. But Farage is a notable entity in politics and journalism, one would hope that being accused of corruption, bribery, and treason would be ruinous for such a career. That is absolutely the sort of thing you would sue over, if you believed you had a good chance at winning.

along_the_road , in US actively considering giving cluster munitions to Ukraine

They really should. There is very limited supply of precision munitions and US plenty of this type of munition.

FracturedPelvis ,

cluster bombs are the cause of A LOT of pain. They are indiscriminate, and they kill civilians for years AFTER conflicts have ended.

along_the_road ,

I understand that can lead to unexploded ordinance however Ukraine is facing a life and death struggle right now and they can use all the ammo that they can get. Of course it's not ideal but US/Europe has very limited supply of precision ammo. And until they can increase production Ukraine needs something to use against dug in Russian positions. Ultimately the decision should be up to Ukrainians since they are the ones that will have to be doing the clean up.

runekn , in MEGATHREAD: whatever the hell is going on in Russia right now

Well that was... weird.

I saw several alleged videos of russian frontline units pledging their support for Prigozhin. Combine that with how little resistance wagner faced and Putin might have realized how weak his position is and given in to replacing MOD staff. Not a good look the same day he declared Prigozhin a traitor and promised punishment.

Trading the long-term stability for the short-term. Because now every aspiring russian warlord know that if you don't like something about the state, all you need is just a big enough private army to bully the kremlin, lol.

techters ,

I don't know why anyone is taking any of this seriously. For all we know, this was done to lure Ukraine into following them into Russia to fall into a set trap, or theater or withdraw and resupply without looking weak. It is odd that it looks like Putin had weakness, but they can always say that's what it was later and the propaganda will work like it always does.

tias ,

Do you really think Ukraine has an interest in following them into Russia? If I was them I would just want to take back Ukraine and secure the borders.

techters ,

They currently have an operation attacking into Russia's boarder...

abhibeckert ,

Only if you accept Russia's description of where the border is. The border as defined by every other country in the entire world says Ukraine is still in their own territory.

There have been some Ukrainian sympathisers setting off bombs/shooting down aircraft/etc inside Russian territory - but those aren't Ukranian soldiers and they're pretty generally just a few random/nonconsequential attacks and don't show any signs of being linked to any "Operation". The front line of the battlefield is nowhere near the border.
