Cuba has a higher life expectancy than the US, by three years. And they accomplished that while being econmically strangled.

What really failed I wonder?

Socialism sounds good on paper but human beings are too easily corrupted.

explodicle ,

So then we need decentralized socialism and not state socialism.

Fazoo ,
@Fazoo@lemmy.ml avatar

That removes people from it how? Someone will hold influence, thus power, regardless of how decentralized you get.

explodicle ,

It doesn’t remove people. It reduces the principal-agent problem of representatives you can’t instantly replace.

Cuba enjoyed massive support from the USSR for decades and it’s still an economically backwards shithole. All the US does is refuse to trade with them.

taanegl ,

Wow, sanctioning a country to hell, by the very closest trading partner who pretty much holds an inordinate amount of sway in the entire continent and in the entire world no less regarding trade deals sure seems innocent the way you put it.

It’s not like average Cubans suffered and the powerful were protected. Surely it wasn’t stupid gesturing brought on by grandstansing politicians who were looking for more circus to their bread. Surely not.

It surely wasn’t another vein attempt by US politicians made to foster an internalised rebellion, that never took off, because Cuban secret police held the fort. Surely it wasn’t all a huge, worthless game, that made ordinary Cubans suffer most of all…

…because that would be dumb posturing. I mean backwards, brain-dead, completely moronic, inhumane and unethical use of power.

oh, wait…

Cleverdawny ,

The US is not obligated to trade with any country. And no action the US ever took posed a serious threat to Cuba or the Castro regime. The poor economic state of that nation is largely because of mismanagement under socialist economic policy. They have plenty of trading partners, they just don’t have a developed economy because communism doesn’t lead to economic development.

Sure, the Bay of Pigs invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, hundreds of assassination attempts, supporting Fulgencio Batista’s crimes, etc. all just completely harmless pranks, right? Not a single Cuban was ever harmed or murdered.

Cleverdawny ,

Harmless, no, but they didn’t destroy the Cuban economy

AntifaSuperWombat ,
@AntifaSuperWombat@hexbear.net avatar

I’m pretty sure that bombing the shit out of Cuba, like many US politicians were planning to do, would have completely destroyed the economy, and you know, more importantly, would have killed a lot of innocent people.

Cleverdawny ,

And I’m sure that if the US had carpet bombed Cuba, then it would have been very destructive. Of course, that never happened, so any attempt to blame the utter failure of Cuban communism to build wealth and increase the economic fortunes of the people of Cuba on a supposed carpet bombing of Havana sounds rather divorced from reality.

AntifaSuperWombat ,

Ugh, wealth is not the most important thing in the world especially considering that it would take over 5 earths if every human wasted as many resources as Freedom People do. That’s neither sustainable nor a smart thing to do. What Cuba instead focuses on is ensuring that every citizen has their basic necessities covered, which the US does not. Healthcare, housing, social security, … all things that are taken for granted in properly developed countries, as it should. There’s a reason the life expectancy in Cuba is superior to the US.

Cleverdawny ,

Yes, yes, that’s why Cubans defect at every opportunity. The Cuban healthcare system is quite remarkable for such a poor nation. It’s just telling that they have to work so hard to keep those doctors captive to it.

AntifaSuperWombat ,
@AntifaSuperWombat@hexbear.net avatar

They do the complete opposite. They send them to other countries all over South America to help them. Ironically, in the middle of the pandemic some US politicians tried to stop this by threatening sanctions against the countries that made use of Cuba’s aid.

Cleverdawny ,

Sure, yes, countries which wouldn’t harbor Cuban defectors.

AntifaSuperWombat ,
@AntifaSuperWombat@hexbear.net avatar

Defectors? Dude, your head is filled with so much propaganda shit, I don’t even know what to say. Like do some reading about migration within South America or migration laws in those countries. Just educate yourself instead of dropping some stupid Reddit one-liner.

Cleverdawny ,

Yes, yes, everything the tankie doesn’t like is propaganda

@AntifaSuperWombat@hexbear.net avatar

Accusing an AnCom of being a Stalinist is definitely a sign that you’ve never bothered to read about politics or political theory from a quality source.

somename ,

This is so fucking stupid. How do you say something like that and believe it makes sense?

somename ,

The United States actually did bomb Cuba, believe it or not. It wasn’t carpet bombing, but at times they totally did drop bombs on Cuban sugar farms. Not to mention the stated back terrorism we inflicted on the Island, which bombed them in a different way.

taanegl ,

Uhm, dumbass. “Plenty of trading partners” includes China, Russia, BRICS more or less, requiring access to the straits down to Cuba (something that isn’t so easy for Russia), but excludes the EU, America in general, all due to a combination of sanctions and trade agreements where those sanctions are built in. So every other Latin-American country that wants to do business with them has to abstain, unless they too get targeted by republican and democrat psychos who jerk them selves to sleep thinking “McCarthy did nothing wrong”.

So yeah, “plenty of trading partners”. Cuba is like that victim that gets choked as well as beaten and the assailant (the US) claiming that “they were asking for it”.

Again, read up on US sanctions, trading agreements and remind yourself that the US government is as subversive and crooked as Russia. Cuba isn’t suffering because of communism - or at least the communism alone - but is but one of many countries that have been subverted by the US government.

The funny and sad thing here is it’s the same problem: centralisation of power. The US has way too much power and should get knocked down a peg.

SinJab0n , (edited )

The US is not obligated to trade with any country.

Leave it to the free market dude, what’s next? Ur gonna tell me they impose arbitrary customs duties, and unfair trade relationships!!!

Wait…
