Where were you getting albums from popular bands/artists for $10 in '99? That shit was approaching $20 or more when Napster finally took care of those assholes.

irmoz , in The decentralized web is growing

Yeah, no. The deaths of those websites have not happened yet, and when they do, the Fediverse will not be the one holding the scythe

Right, it’ll be death by suicides.

Google should probably be on there too. Can’t find anything either non-corporate or irrelevant these days.

I was looking for js libraries that extended the ecma array prototypes, Google gave me a billion pages about how to use the ecma array prototypes.

Never EVER would I buy a car from any manufacturer that does this.

Chariotwheel ,

We said that when the Oblivion horse armor released. And look where we are now.

At some point basically everyone will do it and marketing will fo the rest.

Col3814444 ,

Oblivion doesn’t cost $50k+ to buy. If these greedy fuckers think they can RENT me parts of a car I already own, they can go fuck themselves.

You might not have a choice if they all decide to do it. Companies are actually kinda good at that kind of collective actions sometimes.

When this becomes the norm. I look to the jailbreak community for hope.

I WILL download a car!

I frankly don’t see a way for federated video to happen unless uploads are severely limited or it’s paywalled. Even with YouTube’s wild compression, you’re looking at several gigs for a single 4k video.

Honestly the fact that YouTube exists is a miracle. Video is still just monstrously large.

mkwarman , in Chrome Rocks /s

And it wasn’t just a 4KB “stick” of RAM or something, it was literally magnetic rings threaded onto wires called Magentic Core Memory. Further, 4 KB implies that it was 4096 bytes, but it was actually 2048 “words” consisting of 15-bits (+1 parity bit) [source]. 2048 words requiring 16 bits each means 32,768 magnetic rings weaved onto tiny wires. Oh, and another fun detail about magnetic core memory is that if you read a value, I.e check to see if one of those magnetic rings is set to 0 or 1, that is a destructive operation. So if you wanted to read without deleting, you have to read and then immediately rewrite.

There’s more than three affordable animals lmao. Even if you count fish as one you still have crawfish, shrimp, fish, beef, chicken, pork, lamb, venison, turkey, etc. This also doesn’t even account for the million ways to prepare the meats

Wasn’t 1999 the peak of the price gouging from the record labels? It was like $20-25 for a new album for a ton of the major record labels from what I remember.

I think streaming makes music a “throwaway” product.

I well and fondly remember when a new album of my favorite band came out and I met friends at the music store to listen and buy it from my saved pocket money. And I still habe most of these albums… and I still listen to them… all though they live on my music players hdd permanently

A lot of people in the comments can’t seem to make the distinction between what they have been fed since they were little and that they are used to, and what is good, or tastes good.

abraxas ,

Most people who eat meat also eat some subset of vegetables and know they like/hate some other subset of vegetables.

The human body loves getting addicted to the unhealthy sugar carbs found in some plants, but our taste buds do tend to have a healthier long-term relationship with the umami balance you get more easily from meats and seafoods.

lavadrop , in But I love death

You can eat both vegetables and dead animals at the same time. We call that a stew.
