is it true that trans women like linux and are developers of open source???

i know that can be a stereotype but ive seen a lot of that, trans women are very based and cute so it wouldnt suprise me, and fun fact the reason why i moved to linux at first was because im nonbinary so that was kind of a requirement, but then i loved linux a lot but sadly i dont study linux science that would be amazing

    I have the same question. I remember a while back Linus went off on someone for using the term “woke communist”, so that probably made the rounds in the trans community. Might be what they’re referring to.

    I’d prefer Linux not be tied to the politics of its creator. I don’t expect Linus to be a perfect person any more than I expect Linux to be a perfect OS. But one of those can be fixed with a quick patch.

    I mean Linux is for everyone. But I think the majority of users are probably straight males. I think the trans/fem boy stereotype is more of a community inside joke( not to say there aren’t people of those demographics in the community, and that they aren’t just as welcome as anyone else, but the joke being that Linux will make you trans/a fem boy).

    Though I have seen legit trans people like you say they enjoy Linux so it could interestingly be a demographic that is particularly attracted to Linux for whatever reason.

    If I can give my thoughts on what I’ve seen in research and linking various factors together.

    1. A not insignificant amount of neurodivergent people tend to pursue a career in IT (mainly people with ASD), these people can learn a lot through self study as it tends to align more with their personal interests, at some point through this they may become exposed to Linux and open source and subsequently choose to learn about that.
    2. Research has revealed a strong link between ASD and gender dysphoria. People diagnosed with ASD are ~4 times more likely to experience it.
    3. Even if you go through gender reassignment, you are still subject to the societal programming associated with your initial gender (which for boys tends to include videogames).

    While these 3 facts on their own don’t mean much, I can see how these come together to create an above-average amount of trans women in the IT and Linux spheres and this only gets amplified by stereotypes.

    That said, this is mere speculation on my end based on the things I mentioned above, I am sure it plays a role; but I cannot be sure as to how significant that is in the grand scheme of things.

    We just like tinkering :3 But your OS of choice shouldn’t be just because of your gender, or what the community says you should use. I dual boot windows and arch (btw) because as much as I hate to say it, windows just has more apps/programs [that I use] built for it (stability wise)

    oh oki yes me too i like tinkering but at a surface level because the terminal scares me because i can destroy the os with it!! for example i use ubuntu and chromeos and theyre the best linux and i love it

    Welcome to the community! I think you can learn to like the terminal with time :). But more power to you if you can use Linux without ever touching the command line.

    I do think the only real way to compete with the windows/mac UX is to never show a command line to someone who doesn’t know what to do with it, and still remain operational. As for now, with most distros, if certain things fail to load you end up looking at a command line (not sure about Ubuntu or ChromeOS).

    It’s important to know that, just because your computer booted to a command line doesn’t mean the whole system is hosed. It’s likely just means a UI program failed to start for some reason and otherwise your system is working fine.

    I randomly hit a few trans women who did use Linux in Germany. But it was just randomness.

    I know enough people who prefer Linux without being trans/different. And enough trans people who just dont use Linux either. Its bias.

    Its a bias, many people flock to linux for diffrent reason. Linux is an OS it doesnt descriminate so saying its made by a certain group is untrue.
