maengooen , in Do you use an antivirus? Why, or why not?

I usually haven’t, but I installed Clam about a month ago on my desktop, ran a full and complete scan, then left it running scheduled scans. Hasn’t found anything, and I get a lot of software from outside of my package manager, and use wine for a lot of it, so I’d say my risk/exposure is higher than most.

I think it’s fine to go without AV on a linux desktop, but I like the peace of mind. There will definitely be more things targeting linux sytems as/if more market share is acquired, but in terms of security it’s more important that you harden the system than run an AV.

Cube6392 , in Do you use an antivirus? Why, or why not?

Personally I don’t use one on any platform because the antivirus companies tend to… Create problems in order to solve them. If you’re going to use one on Linux, ClamAV is probably the play. However, far better for your security is to pick a distro that publishes security patches quickly, like Debian or Arch Linux, and then to update your system frequently

StrangeAstronomer , in Was Fedora always so unstable?

Rock solid on my 11-yo laptop that has been running fedora and updated every 6 months since I bought it in 2012.

I’ve always updated late in the fedora cycle - maybe that’s the go.

@shertson@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I’ve been running Fedora since the first Fedora Core release. Only ever had an issue once, back on FC4 but was easily fixed. My current laptop is 8 years old and is solid. Only issue is rotating it causes airplane mode to turn on, so I don’t rotate it.

I only have problem with driver in Fedora, and nothing Else. Only Upgrade driver when needs to.

Marrenia , in Do you use an antivirus? Why, or why not?

That is always a possibility. The only av currently existing that is free is clamav - there are multiple gui frontends for it since it’s really meant for servers and stuff - I’ve mainly seen people use it to scan files before you send it to a windows user tho so not much use unless you need to do that

jlh , in Do you use an antivirus? Why, or why not?

You dont need an antivirus if you don’t run software from unknown sources, and you keep your machine up to date.

For the most part, if you do all that and you’re still attacked, they would probably get past an antivirus, anyways. I’ve never had an antivirus catch anything after decades of running Windows.

A bit thing to note for people running home servers is to watch what they expose to the internet. Insecure software and insecure configurations are huge targets for botnets these days.

WildlyCanadian , in Do you use an antivirus? Why, or why not?
@WildlyCanadian@lemmy.ca avatar

I don’t use antivirus on Windows, let alone Linux. Just be mindful of what you’re downloading and you’ll be fine.

skomposzczet ,

Same here. Ever since I remember I don’t have AV, just staying out of sketchy sites is enough. Most of malware is targeted at the least aware and cautious users.

MJBrune ,

Windows has done of the best antivirus built-in

AProfessional , in Do you use an antivirus? Why, or why not?

Run sandboxed software when possible and avoid doing unsafe things.

There is no useful AV for Linux desktops.

tarneo , in Distro hoppers, how do you manage your config files?

I’m not a distrohopper, but GNU stow is delightfully simple. See my dotfiles as an example.

GustavoM , in Best distro for Hyprland?
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Can someone give me a tl;dr about hyprland? Is there any noticeable difference(s) compared to wayland? Thanks.

theshatterstone54 OP ,

Hyprland is a Wayland compositor. Wayland is the set of protocols, Wlroots is an implementation of these protocols, allowing developers to create a Wayland compositor without having to worry about all the lower-level stuff, while still having to implement a lot on their own. Hyprland is a tiling Wayland compositor, the Wayland equivalent of a tiling window, and it includes features like animations and rounded corners (basically eyecandy). Brodie Robertson had a very good explanation on his channel, but I can’t seem to be able to find it.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Alright, that’ll do it. Thanks.

theshatterstone54 OP ,

You’re welcome

GustavoM , in Distro hoppers, how do you manage your config files?
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Via a script that “automatically” copies (and installs) everything I need to its respective folder.

morain , in What was your first experience using Linux? How old were you? Stick around or did you go back to windows before eventually circling back to Linux?

I’d been a Fidonet BBS sysop for years when I read Torvald’s post on comp.os.minux and I was interested, as MS-DOS was too limited. So I downloaded my first “not distro” on a midnight call (300 baud!) to Finland. It wasn’t even a distro back then, just a bare kernel and a few programs. Then SLS came out in late '92 and I was off and running.

I’ve hopped all the major distros just out of curiosity and torture/fun, many times, too many to count. Each has it’s own quirks and usability, but they all have the kernel. So it doesn’t matter which you run as long as you like it, you’re having fun exploring, and it does what you want it to do.

Kekin , in Distro hoppers, how do you manage your config files?
@Kekin@lemmy.world avatar

I copy everything in my home folder and paste it all in the new installation. Works well if I stick with the same desktop environment.

shu , in Does anyone actually use Enlightenment?
@shu@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I used E16 in early 2000 and it had really cool themes. It was the hot shit right beside the newest xmms skin for your pirated but fully tagged mp3 library (with picard) on your local hard drive.

eyolf OP ,

I remember that one of the things that really blew me away was the virtual desktop pager which was a live miniature of the actual desktops.

gfom , in Does anyone actually use Enlightenment?

I think Budgie plans to move from GTK to ELF.

ike ,

Wild theory, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they change to iced-rs when they realize they can’t do the work needed to get elf to do exactly what they want, and instead can ride off of system76’s insane development accomplishments in their new rust based ecosystem of desktop components.

Reasons it might happen: the blog post specifically mentioned wanting a new ui-toolkit that worked well with rust or go, but at that time s76 hasn’t announced or dived into developing iced-rs more. I think it even mentioned hoping that s76 would build an alternative.
