HubertManne , in What was your first experience using Linux? How old were you? Stick around or did you go back to windows before eventually circling back to Linux?

I think my roommates installed it on a pc in college so we are talking pre 95 but I had no idea what it was but it was in the days when they were screwing around with os/2 before win95 came out. I did not really use it until after 2000 though and that was when working in a place that was an irix shop so had the general nix experience going as I was starting to use linux. freebsd at about the same time.

MonkeyLord , in why did you switch?
@MonkeyLord@lemmy.ml avatar

For me I was always interested in alternative OS’. I didn’t necessarily dislike windows, I just thought Linux was fascinating and liked playing around with the different ways to do things and accomplish tasks.

It was only later in life that I learned how excessive windows data collection was and became uncomfortable with using it that I began to seek out linux as a full alternative and try to decouple myself from the windows ecosystem.

Guys do you have a memory leak? When it is open, it consumes around 200 MB of RAM. After a while it reaches 800 MB

mst ,

How long is “a while”? I’ve had it open for around 30 minutes now and I’m not seeing what you’re describing. Around the 15 minute mark I also tried clicking through various tabs, performing some actions, etc. and memory usage is still staying steady at 247MiB.

teawrecks ,

Eh, what is it doing that requires 200MB+ memory?

mst ,

That is a very good question. Short answer: I don’t know as I am not familiar with the project.

I have had a brief look at the issue tracker and it doesn’t seem to be mentioned on there. Perhaps I will raise an issue later when I am at my computer (or if anyone else beats me to it then please feel free).

Mine was a Raspberry Pi in the early 2010s - I‘d had relatively little experience with computers before and had no idea what a terminal was (or even Linux for that matter, tbh), so it took me a good couple of weeks to even figure out how to reach the desktop… Used Windows most of the time after that, but got back into Linux via Ubuntu a couple of years ago. I‘ve now switched to Fedora as my daily driver and wouldn‘t go back either :)

1997, I was 22, it was m68k on an 030 Amiga 1200… for some reason.

I seem to remember I had to buy an FPU to plug into my 030 accelerator, specifically to get this to run. I have no idea what I wanted it for, other than curiosity. I got it working, played around with it for ten minutes, then deleted the partition.

I tried Linux on and off many times after that, but always bounced off it. The last time, 2021, I installed Linux Mint and it has finally stuck.

Caldera OpenLinux^[a chorus of “ding dong, the witch is dead” may be appropriate here], in 1999. It didn’t really impress me, and I went back to Windows 98SE (then 2K Pro) until 2005 . . . at which point I found Gentoo, and it was love at first compile. 😅

Linus Torvalds said somewhere, that in a weird irony, the reason why he made Linux in the first place was to use it on his desktop computer, yet desktop is the only market where Linux has not completely crushed all of its competition.

where Linux has not completely crushed all of its competition

…yet.

But the time is coming! in 90000000000000003, 90000000000000002, 90000000000000001…

freeman ,

It is getting better. But most people CANT use it as a daily driver.

The unfortunate relaity is that MS rules the business space, and without native Outlook/Teams/Office is pretty tough. You can skimp by with browser based versions but still…That not gonna cut it for julie from HR i guess.

I have been seriously considering trying it at work. But I do admin work. So many of the tools I use are opensource. Will still need RDP though.

LLovegood , in Has anyone used or contributed to OpenStreetMap?

I use organic maps, based on openstreetmap, it has more information than i expected but still much less than google. It’s almost on par with apple maps where I live, both significantly worse than google.

chockblock ,

It can be a fun project to map out the area you live. I’ve been working on that over the past couple years and it is fun.

Over in Europe, OSM Is much more mapped out in my opinion. It would be good to see North America catch up.

nothacking , in Has anyone used or contributed to OpenStreetMap?

I frequently use it and correct any errors I find. In a lot of places OSM can frequently be wrong, but fixing this requires very little effort, just use it and correct any errors you notice.

Hexadecimalkink , in Standardizing the Linux Desktop ...

There already are Linux standards, its just that there are lots of people developing their own distros. Asking people who are developing in their free time to contribute to a collective solution if they don’t want to is forcing them to do something they don’t want to do in their free time.

Linux will become big in countries that encourage their governments and companies not to use Windows, and eventually there will be a few major players for desktop beyond the big 3 for enterprise (Suse, Ubuntu, Redhat)

Astra Linux in Russia is becoming the mass adopted Linux, the longer the war goes, the more companies that won’t be able to renew Microsoft licenses, the more adoption of Linux will increase.

Deepin Linux (China UOS) gets about 500 posts on it’s forums in Chinese per day. That version of Linux will likely become the dominant desktop OS in China by ~2030 if the USA continues sanctions.

Linux Mint has incrementally been growing a user base and donations every month. 5 years ago they were getting 7,000 euros on average per month, today they get 12,000 euros on average per month.

I’m not worried about Linux Desktop anymore, it’s a permanently established common good even if the majors like Red Hat and Ubuntu fold. And just like Lemmy and Mastodon popped up, at some point in the future Microsoft will do something greedy with Windows and people will flock to a few distros and it’ll all be over then.

94 my uni used HP-ux work stations. So many of us set up Linux on a home machine. Slackware at the time. I was forced to dual boot through most of my uni time. As many needed programs just did not have viable candidates on linux. But by 2000 I found windows annoying and rarely needed to use it. Was likely about 2005 before I stopped installing windows all together. But even now. I have a cheap mini PC with win 11. It is used rarely. But photography and ham radio being my main hobbies. I find many Chinese products have 0 linux option for upgrading firmware or some other configuration option. So keep a mini pc just for that.

Roughly about 92/93 is when I got my first exposure to Linux, but had been using older legacy UNIX systems which were accessed through the dial-up VAX systems at the local uni.

First distro was SLS Linux, as a buddy was a C developer for a UNIX house. They had been gifted a copy from SoftLanding for testing for possible future developments. It was usable, but pretty rough. You could bypass the login, by simply holding the backspace key (removing the login prompt) and pressing Enter.

Ran it on a IBM PS/2 for about 6 months, before moving it back to DOS.. then about a year later moved to Slackware, when it become available through Usenet.

matricaria , in Has anyone used or contributed to OpenStreetMap?

Yes I use OSM almost exclusively and have contributed to it.

Where I live, in Germany, OSM is pretty much on the same level as Google Maps and way better than Apple Maps. Sometimes there is outdated info but you can quickly correct it. Sometimes I double check stuff with GM. Some information is even better than GM. But I think Germany has a pretty strong OSM community, at least in my city.

I use Organic Maps on iOS.

schmurian ,
@schmurian@lsmu.schmurian.xyz avatar

Same here. I downloaded it recently to have a look and just realized how easy it is to update information for places that I frequently visit. What I like about that is that I can add information isn‘t listed in any map, because shop owners other people responsible don‘t bother (yes, people like this exist).

meldrik , (edited )

Doesn’t Apple Maps use data from OSM? Edit: They actually do. At least in Denmark.

https://i.imgur.com/iHfOXw0.jpg

matricaria ,

Kinda, the information is definitely not the same.

meldrik ,

It might be specific data and not everything, that Apple uses from OSM.

diaphanous ,

Hey, another German here and I’ve been using OSMAnd for android for years, but I’ve never contributed. How can I get into it easily?

matricaria ,

Make an account on OSM, find something wrong on the map, update it.

Start with your commute or places you go. Check the information, I often find wrong opening hours. Maybe some constitution altered something. You’ll find something.

basic_spud , in What was your first experience using Linux? How old were you? Stick around or did you go back to windows before eventually circling back to Linux?

I didnt have access to good internet, this was back in the pretty early dial-up era in the 90s. I bought "Corel Linux" on disc(s) from Costco. It wasn't particularly great, but I definitely learned a lot about getting linux to play nice with hardware!
