soller , in What distro(s) do you use?
@soller@lemmy.world avatar

I have a few dozen computers and most run Pop!_OS.

cdsigma ,

What’s your second most commonly used distro?

mramazingman , in What do you like about your Linux Distro?

I started using Kali Linux earlier this year. I’m by no means a hacker but it’s the first version of Linux with a UI that clicked for me. It’s built off of Debian so I’m pretty familiar with its package management and it’s been really easy to get a barebones version running on different computers.

eleitl , in Give it to me straight. How worried are you for Fedora's future after Red Hats recent anti user decisions?

I don’t care about it at all. If you want freedom from corporations, use community owned distros.

analisys , in Give it to me straight. How worried are you for Fedora's future after Red Hats recent anti user decisions?

I think it’s too big to fail, but it killed personally interest for me for some time.

warmaster , in AMD CPU Use Among Linux Gamers Approaching 70% Marketshare

I hope they increase their market share even more, they have been great with open source.

coolin , in Why do people hate Manjaro and how to replicate Manjaro sway in arch or arco?

I’ve never used Manjaro but the perception I get from it is that it is a noob friendly distro with good GUI and config (good) but then catastrophically fails when monkeying around with updates and the AUR. This is a pain for technical users and a back-to-Windows experience for the people it’s targeted towards. Overall, significantly worse than EndeavorOS or plain 'ol vanilla Arch Linux.

Fryboyter , in I will be returning from a month-long vacation next week. Let’s see if my arch machine will break completely!

I have several virtual machines here with Arch that I often don’t use for months. And when I do use them, I proceed as I do with every update. So before an update, I check if something has been published at archlinux.org/news/ that affects the installation in question. This is done automatically with the help of the tool informant. If something has been published that affects my installations, I take that into account. Otherwise I run pacman -Syu as usual. And that’s it.

unceme , in what is the best privacy distro?
@unceme@lemmy.one avatar

Everyone is recommending Tails but I feel like that’s a lot more intense security and privacy wise than GrapheneOS, since Tails runs in a live environment only.

chockblock OP ,

Yea I am looking for something a little more general purpose

dpkonofa , in Give it to me straight. How worried are you for Fedora's future after Red Hats recent anti user decisions?

As someone who hasn’t really been following, what anti-user decisions are those?

nan ,
@nan@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Source code distribution change is the big one now, on top of getting rid of traditional centos: news.itsfoss.com/red-hat-restricts-source-code/

I don’t really see them as anti-user, in the sense that if you are a subscriber your position has never changed and they are happy to provide support in exchange for money. They do restrict your ability to redistribute (they threaten to cancel your subscription) which I am not a fan of.

Fedora is also looking at adding telemetry. They are calling it opt-in but also defaulting the checkbox to “on”, at least in discussions.

southsamurai ,
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

You know what’s funny? Most of the time, when something asks me to opt in for telemetry, I strongly consider doing so, then look into what’s collected and end up deciding I’m okay with it.

But when I have to opt out, or the default is selected to opt in, I just lose trust entirely.

And I’ll jump through hoops to block anything I can’t replace that doesn’t even ask.

Like, I totally understand why some telemetry is necessary for continued development. I’m down with that. But the shadier it is, the less willing I am to allow it.

angrymouse , in Give it to me straight. How worried are you for Fedora's future after Red Hats recent anti user decisions?

I don’t give a shit about fedora but I’m very worried about the future of Linux as a whole, red hat has an undisputable importance in the Linux ecossistem and these movements maybe are a signal that IBM don’t give a fuck about that

RassilonianLegate , in Give it to me straight. How worried are you for Fedora's future after Red Hats recent anti user decisions?
@RassilonianLegate@mstdn.social avatar

@shapis
I'm gonna keep using fedora for now, largely becouse I don't want to go to the effort to set certain things up all over again, but I'm at least paying enough attention to what's going on that if they do something I see as to far I'll switch

Still not sure what too though

Have you considered btrfs compression?

mvirts OP ,

Not until now! Isn’t there some lore around btrfs or something…

mvirts OP ,

Damn that’s awesome

smooth_jazz_warlady , in What screen locker do you use and why?

Still haven’t gotten around to setting one up but I plan to. Speaking of which, recommendations for Wayland screen lockers that can also act as a screensaver?

dlarge6510 , in What screen locker do you use and why?

None.

tok3n , in What do you like about your Linux Distro?
@tok3n@lemmy.world avatar

Kubuntu 22.04. All my games run like butter without much tinkering. I learned most of my Linux stuff on Debian or Ubuntu in the early days and most of what I need comes in .deb form.
