In reality, if you’re a mid or large sized business, it won’t make any difference. My company continues to pay for RHEL for the piece of mind of knowing we get support (even though we never use it!)
I can totally see enthusiasts and small businesses going with cheaper options (aka free!)
I really don’t understand how things that require a significant amount of user interaction (click on link, follow instructions) are rated at above 9. We see potentially wormable vulnerabilities rated at less than this.
While social engineering is obviously a significant component towards breaches, an attacker could just as easily trick a user into giving up their credentials in a phone call while pretending to be helpdesk etc
Not a pro take here … but when I was playing with various distros back in early 2001-03 I favoured Ubuntu, simply because it was the most user friendly (still have an old laptop duel-booted with it).
distrowatch.com is a good place to look around and check out what’s new and true to your needs.

Just be aware of distrowatch rankings, they’re sorted by visits to the site, impressions and etc, and don’t necessarily reflect how much a distro is really widely used.
As others have said, if your device doesn’t have a Nvidia card, go with Linux Mint. If you do have a Nvidia card Fedora (maybe not the default GNOME version, as GNOME’s workflow required some time to get used to) or openSUSE might be better options.
If you’re okay with a distro installer asking a few more questions than the basic ones, and you don’t need super updated stuff, you can also try Debian.
It’s not your fault, Google has become almost useless when it comes to things that aren’t commercial SEO optimized stuff. The curse of popularity, I guess.
I’ve been using it for 5 years on laptop and desktop and I’ve had very few issues since then. Imo it offers the best trade-off between up to date packages (and availability of packages and repos), rolling release and stability. I don’t see any reason to switch distros anytime soon.
More details: I’m using xfce and I’ve installed firefox from the unstable branch (via apt pinning) because I wanted it to be more bleeding edge.
thanks for the answer! I have installed it on a VM and noticed that only firefox-esr is present, which is a couple of versions behind. Why isn’t a “normal” firefox package included? and also, does installing firefox from the unstable branch causes any problems to other packages, conflicts, etc, or is it completely safe?
Yes, that’s why I installed it from unstable. The ESR version is an older version with added security patches. I’m not sure, why exactly they are doing it like that and I don’t think it’s a good idea. I’d say a browser should be as up to date as possible for both, bug fixes AND new features. But it worked flawlessly using the “unstable” firefox package. Another option would be the flatpak, but that’s not that well integrated into the system - last time I tried that, the font rendering in the browser was awkward. I use some other flatpaks though, most notably gimp and inkskape which work really well and are very up to date that way.
I was thinking I was going to wait until Fedora 40 was closer to launch before I migrated all my personal VM’s over to Debian but I ended up doing it today to cut myself loose entirely of IBM’s shenanigans. It’s a shame about IBM leadership, but being in corporate leadership myself I’m certainly not surprised by any of their recent behavior. Where you have any large incentives (power, money, fame), you will see the uglier side of human nature.
System 76 customer here. I just replaced my 2011 system 76 lemur with a new lemur. I have Ubuntu installed on both and have never tried pop os. I was very happy with that laptop and the company in general. It actually still runs okay. I did replace the battery after about 5 or 6 years. I’m thinking of trying out nixos on it.
My guilty reason for upgrading was I wanted to play dwarf fortress at more than 5 fps…
I’m curious why you’ve never tried pop? I thought i’d hate the tiling and all that, but it and the gestures are so intuitive… i’ve used all sorts of desktop environments on linux over the last 20 some years, and pop is by far the most usabunity with the least learning curve.
Well, Pop was released way after I bought the first laptop. I guess I haven’t had any reason to try it out, as I’m happy with my i3/sway setup. I don’t really hop distros at all. Maybe when system76 completes/releases their full cosmic desktop (not based on gnome) I’ll give it a spin.
I’ve heard they run Linux well before, but I certainly didn’t expect them to be so popular, lol. Plus they’re cheap, which make them seem like a very nice choice. Thanks for the model specific recs, too!
I’m on Ubuntu Studio and using Ardour (though I also got Reaper and have been meaning to try it out). There is a LinuxAudio community here on Lemmy you can visit to get some advice!
I use REAPER, which also has native Linux support and run most of my vsts over yabridge. Works really well for me overall but i try to use as much native foss vsts as possible. See safereddit.com/r/…/linux_plugins_thread_2022/ for some examples
Ardour runs on Linux machines (because it was written for it iirc) and Reaper is working on RasPi iirc. You’ll have to dig deeper into those yourself, especially as they pertain to your VSTs and other software, but it’s not impossible.
