What Respawn did with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Massive has done with Star Wars Outlaws, and that’s creating a unique Star Wars experience we haven’t had before. Star Wars Outlaws does a lot of things, and at no point does it fumble with its ambition, and executes on it with truly epic moments, fun stealth, and freedom of choice. Massive Entertainment really knows how to make their game worlds feel lived in, and there’s no better setting than Star Wars, especially during the latter episodes of the original trilogy. Star Wars Outlaws epitomizes the Han Solo line, “Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid” so wonderfully.

Star Wars Outlaws departs somewhat from the typical Ubisoft formula and presents a pleasantly focused open world with a round playtime of 30-40 hours and a large focus on stealth. Not every planet is equally open and large, but each one looks incredibly beautiful and captures the Star Wars atmosphere that fans love so much. The AI and occasional bugs do take you out of the immersion and the story is not outstanding apart from the characters, but we still couldn’t get enough of Kay, Nix, ND-5 and the many planets. Just beware of the addictive potential of the card game Sabacc.

Outlaws is an excellent Star Wars game. It’s also aggressively not for me. I felt tangible disappointment whenever a new mission required quietly infiltrating an enemy base. But I also recognize that the systems at work here are well-crafted ones. The enemy AI is fun to learn the limits of. You have multiple ways of quietly taking out guards. Most bases have alternate routes for infiltration. The grenade system is awful, but combat is otherwise tense and engaging. There’s all sorts of little activities like speeder racing and gambling. If you’re looking to live that scoundrel lifestyle in a galaxy far, far away then this game is made for you.

I found myself very pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed Star Wars Outlaws. I became quite invested in its grounded heist narrative, even if its supporting characters didn’t really rise above one-note stereotypes. It was a blast exploring the Star Wars galaxy, whether it was shooting down TIE fighters in space or just chilling in a Sabacc den playing cards with Lando Calrissian. Ubisoft Massive has done an excellent job in crafting an open-world Star Wars adventure, and this is one heist that is worth signing up for.

As a Star Wars fan, judging Outlaws is quite a difficult task. Very objectively speaking, there is still plenty to criticize about this game. Technically and in terms of gameplay it is really not high quality. The combat in particular is a bit too basic for the year 2024. Explosions seem to come from 2010 and we have also seen better facial animations. Then it is very doubtful that a paid season pass has been added where more missions will be playable later. Of course, you don’t have to purchase this, but content in a single-player game that is behind a paywall is never desirable. But, and a really big but, as a Star Wars fan it is simply a pleasure to finally travel around and discover the open world of Tatooine and the other plants. These planets have been designed with so much love that it is a pleasure to comb every meter. There is a bizarre amount to do outside the storyline, without it becoming boring. Kay as the main character won’t reach Kratos or Ellie status, but is fun enough. Together with Nix and ND-5 there is enough interaction to enjoy following the various conversations. Don’t expect a groundbreaking game from Star Wars Outlaws, but fans will enjoy it from start to finish. Outlaws is not finished to perfection and it all feels a bit clumsy, but that gives exactly the right Star Wars feeling of the original trilogy.

Massive managed to avoid many issues that Ubisoft titles are often criticized for, and Outlaws is a must-play for any Star Wars fan.

For its first shot in the beloved galaxy far, far away, Ubisoft Massive makes a convincing show of Force, in an open world formula relatively well adapted. At its best, Star Wars Outlaws is a very good blend between action-adventure and stealth games, especially thanks to the adorable addition of Nix. It’s also one of the most beautiful and immersive Star Wars games to date, that pays a lovely tribute to this monument of the pop-culture. The whole experience is although marred by a conventional story, with rather cliché characters, some frustrating bug mostly rare bugs, and the terrible AI that has plagued Ubisoft games for years. Nevertheless, this is definitely a good Star Wars Games, which could spark a new hope for the return of Ubisoft at its peak.

Outlaws is at its best when it’s telling you a story. I was immediately invested in Kay and Nix and loved going on this journey with them. I didn’t skip a single cinematic or hurry through dialogue and, as a casual Star Wars fan, I would say that’s a big win for the folks at Massive Entertainment. There were certainly some places where the gameplay felt repetitive, but climbing, grappling, and taking out my foes in chaotic battles with my Blaster always felt satisfying. Working with Nix to solve puzzles or stealth through areas was a treat. Now that I’ve beaten the story, I’m not sure I’ll spend much time in the open world, but Outlaws did such a good job that I’m thinking of digging into some of the movies and television shows I’ve been passing on. That’s about as big a compliment as I can give the story.

For all of its efforts to stretch out to forge its own identity, Outlaws can’t resist occasionally returning to the nostalgia well. But such grievances are likely to run off you like water off a duck’s back. In the end, everything here, down to the scaleable difficulty, clever upgrade system that bypasses usual RPG-levelling mechanics where skills and upgrades are tied into missions, and the surprisingly fun minigames, is so well executed that you’ll always feel like your wildest galactic scoundrel fantasy has been realized.

The idea of a Star Wars game focusing entirely on the world of outlaws in its seedier parts of the universe is a great one, but it deserved a different kind of game than Star Wars Outlaws, instead of being suited for something more like Shadows of Doubt, Disco Elysium or even L.A. Noire. Even a straight, linear action game would be better. Instead, we get a boring, open-world monstrosity with uninspired gameplay, way too many useless features and a constant deluge of uninteresting side content. Kay and company deserve way better and so do the players. Save your credits and wait for something like a solo Kessel Sabacc game instead.

Star Wars Outlaws does have its strengths, though—the worlds in this game can sing. You can feel like there is life that is living and breathing in the world—the snowfall of Kijimi, the rain of Akiva; there are strong environments at times that made me feel like I was in the Star Wars universe. It’s a game that made big promises, but unfortunately, it is one of the many AAA games that failed to deliver on them. The restrictive gameplay, subpar story, and uncanny valley facial animations make the game hard to recommend at full price.

I feel safe in recommending Star Wars Outlaws to anyone who is a Star Wars fan who is looking for a solid story in the beloved universe, with stealth-focused gameplay that allows you to truly live the life of a scoundrel on the Outer Rim.

STAR WARS OUTLAWS had me giddy in points. I was walking down the dusty streets of Mos Eisley, past the hanger where the Millenium Falcon would have been parked up. Walking into the cantina and spotting the blaster mark on the wall which confirmed who shot first. Lots of little details make this visit to the galaxy far far away one of the most memorable of the last couple of years, but these cities felt real in a way I’ve never experience before, teeming and lived in, this open world game from Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment feels expansive and intimate at the same time.

It rewards curiosity, encourages exploration, and makes players feel like a true part of the galaxy far, far away. Navigating Kay Vess’s journey does not just feel like playing a game; it allows players to feel like they are actively living in a Star Wars story, one choice at a time. In that sense, Star Wars Outlaws does not just meet expectations; it joins the ranks of Jedi: Survivor and Knights of the Old Republic II as it sets a new standard for what an open-world Star Wars game can and should be.
