I’ve always loved Galactic Battlegrounds because RTS are fun. Rebellion is another great one that another commenter mentioned. I was also a fan of Jedi Knight and Jedi Academy and replaced them on switch a year or two back.
I played Mass Effect 3 all the way to just before the final mission using only level 1 weapons. When I was doing my final walk through of the ship I went down to the hangar and encountered a terminal I hadn’t seen that let me upgrade my weapons. I had like 700,000 credits and upgraded everything right then and there.
There’s a few classic Star Wars games that don’t get talked about as much that are great. Galactic battlegrounds is an age of empire 2 clone with Star Wars skins and stories. I played the crap out of this one over the years. Fun campaigns and tons of fan made missions out 5err too. But a ton of the old Star Wars games are fun if you are a fan. Freelancer is a PC game that I don’t think you can even buy any more which was a fun space sim from back in the day and holds up somewhat. Star Trek also had a bunch of interesting games in the early aughts worth checking out if you’re so inclined.
This reads like dialogue written for the “pretentious writer” friend character trope who is always shitting on other peoples’ work but hasn’t ever had any success with his own in every B-list Hollywood meta comedy: smug, confident, completely wrong, and utterly without purpose or substance.
I’mma do it, I’mma be the one to bring up Undertale this time (estimated 2 hours, worth a few replays), there’s also little nightmares (2-4 hours depending on platforming skills) which is a spooky little game, but not too spooky if you ever play in front of the kids.
But my favorite is Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, which was made by some of the people who created Fallout and has a LOT in common with it. It’s an open world, a combination of classic fantasy with elves, dwarves, and halflings with a rising steampunk technology that competes with magic. There are many schools of magic and technology, as well as social, stealth, and combat skills. The graphics are very crude by today’s standards, but the gameplay is outstanding.
You know, I never tried Diablo 1 even though I grew up religiously playing Diablo 2. Also love the original fallout games, I definitely need to make time for this.
Diablo 1 has the same gameplay as the other games but in terms of scope and concept it’s much more self contained, it’s a different experience. Good game, but d2 is what the sequels have all tried to recreate, so it will feel quite different.
Thanks for the warning, but I don’t mind different; different can be good. I’m excited to see the beginnings of my childhood game, I think it’ll be worth the patience. Though, having a hard time finding it, it’s not on the blizzard downloads list. I’mma do more digging tho, it’s gotta be out there somewhere.
I don’t need complete agency and freedom to enjoy a game. I don’t play games like Red Dead Redemption and The Last of Us expecting to create my own story; I play them to be immersed in a beautifully written and preformed narrative.
I’m running via steam/proton, and I’ve encountered the situation you describe twice. Both times were after playing for several hours. Being difficult to reproduce, it hasn’t bothered me much.
When it happens during each session it gets a bit tiresome. Especially when progress wasn’t being correctly saved. Had to redo a bunch of quest steps which gets old pretty quickly.
Returnal, Resident Evil REmakes, most Giant Bomb games, Firewatch, Hellblade…
If you liked Alan Wake, definitely give the RE remakes and Hellblade a shot, and don’t sleep on Firewatch. In fact, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is probably one of the most thoughtful and atmospheric experiences in gaming (at least in the field of 3rd person, pseudo action games).
I second Resident Evil games. But, they have multiple ends that require replay the games or a large portion of them. You can watch the endings on YouTube though. But iirc, RE VII, has a whole different portion of game influenced by a choice you make, than make you replay that whole part and it can be long.
