Have you tried SimCompanies? It's similar to what you're looking for. You build a company over the course of months and find a niche in an economy that's mostly player run.

Man, this thread reminded me of some of the great old games I used to play back in the day.

And if any of ya’ll are into Space Fighters and Dog-Fight Tactics, boy have I got something for you.

‘Decent: Freespace’ and ‘Freespace 2’.

Although the graphics might seem a bit dated, believe me when I say it won’t matter in the least. You’ll be far more focused on the information your HUD is feeding you, giving orders to squad-mates and navigating the basic controls in a panic.

Unlike some modern space games, you don’t get to just screw around with standard WASD +Mouse controls. Your keyboard is your cockpit and everything pretty much controls as in one (although a simplified one). There is no auto-aim and no freebies, if you can’t keep your aim where it’s supposed to be, you miss.

There’s also a energy-management system where you get to prioritize what subsystems needs more power: Shields, Weapons or Engines. And you can overclock the different systems at the expense of the others on the fly. Choose wisely.

You get to choose your own ships and weapons loadout as you rise though the ranks and gain access to various new goodies, not all missions calls for the heaviest ordinance. Finesse and maneuverability are virtues here.

The story is fairly basic: “Terrans (Humans) and an Alien Race known as the Vasudans are at war. Third Alien Race pops in and wrecks house on both sides. Shit gets interesting as the new Alien Race are technologically superior and neigh unkillable.”

The voice-acting is phenomenal and you really get the feeling of being an expandable grunt, that slowly gets to prove his worth and is let in on more and more Special-Ops assignments, equipment and such. Everything is on a need-to-know basis and there’s a lot you don’t need to know.

The game contains plenty of bonus objectives that aren’t immediately apparent. Sometimes it pays off to stick around a bit longer when you’re told you can go back to base. ;)

I don’t know how good I am at selling the games, but damn if they aren’t the best I’ve ever played in the space-fighter genre to date.

They are worth giving a try at the very least. And they are dirt cheap on GOG as a bonus.

I’ll just add the intro sequence the first game here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJ-xcgBL1mY

God damn I miss Ogame back when it was decent. Even getting fleet crashed because you forget to send them on a mission was exciting. I'll keep an eye on this thread, that sounds fun.

Some of the most popular games are on GOG - Tomb Raider (classic) series, Prince of Persia series, Baldur’s Gate series, The Elder Scrolls series (including Skyrim) and several others. Modern titles apart from The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077 include Horizon Zero Dawn, A Plague Tale, Disco Elysium and Psychonauts 2. But perhaps the best known titles on GOG are indie platformers like Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest and Terraria.

Hirom , in Sega calls video games that use blockchain technology 'boring'

Things I often find lacking in videos games: good storytelling, adjustable subtitle/UI size, immersive world with adequate pattern of life (eg background characters, random environment animations, …).

Things I don’t miss: NFTs, microtransactions, constant in-game awards/points collections.

Krakatoa ,

That’s the biggest issue with a lot of Blockchain or micro transaction games; they are first and foremost a way to make money for the company. Look at any web3.0 nft game on the market. All the marketing is “play to earn” bullshit. If a company really wanted NFTs or whatever to take off, make an exciting, engaging, fun to play game and then you can get a player base nft or no.

Hirom ,

NFT sounds like a convoluted way to earn money for games. If a company can make a exciting, engaging, fun to play game, can’t they just sell them? Adding NFTs into the game/gameplay might just annoy players and scare people away.

If you’re a fan of Star Trek, they have quite a few excellent titles. Personal favs are Armada II (RTS), Bridge Commander (Ship Sim, even better with mods!), and Elite Force (you’re a Security officer on Voyager, FPS made by the Quake developers.

I don’t have too many good suggestions but mid-to-late game Satisfactory has some of the vibe you might be looking for, especially if you are able to have it run on a dedicated server while you are away.

It’s hella addictive and it might take 8 hours of playing to get to a point the factory can run completely on its own. It can be a bit complicated to get everything run at a good efficiency but it’s pretty much not required unless you a raging perfectionist.

Messier43 OP ,

Oh, I never thought about that. That means it keeps producing, while I’m away if I host the server version myself?

plasticus ,

Satisfactory is so good. One of my all-time favorites. I use a dedicated server when I play it, because I’ll play from a few different computers when I do. But resources stop pumping out if nobody is connected to it. Maybe there’s an option or a setting to keep things rolling, but that’s the default behavior – nobody connected the game effectively pauses.

Rentlar ,

Yes exactly. However, until you get coal power going, the factory runs on biofuel which you have to keep getting yourself or else it shuts down after a couple hours. Which is why I say mid to late game fits this best.

Once you do, then you can produce an unlimited amount of stuff as long as you have somewhere to store it (unlike Factorio that has limited resources) and use it to build whatever you think you need. The milestones get progressively more complex :/ but you have the leisure to complete it at whatever pace you like :)

habaneroanalbeads , in Kingdom Hearts III killed my love for the saga

Honestly, KH3 and FF15 were major disappointments for me. Even tho Nomura stepped away from 15 and the story, I still blame Nomura for those dumpster fires.

The main point of disgust with KH3 was thinking I was halfway done with the story and ready for the 2nd visits of each of the game worlds, only to find we were at the fucking end???

Also that games’ 1k heartless battle with the that god awful heartless background with the ass framerate? At that point I had given up on the series.

Then, some time later, I like watching youtube while doing the dishes, so I gave the story to Union X and Dark Road a try, and hot damn did they just pull me back in.

Hamano OP ,

Meh, I didn’t really like the mobile games, but I might give the story of them a try.

So basically incremental/idle games with some light strategy or base building mechanics?

Messier43 OP ,

You could phrase it that way, yes :)

Off the top of my head:

Or maybe try on r/incremental_games on the other website.

The forum hint is great, thanks a lot I played kitten game a lot in the past, it’s awesome. Will check home quest out, thank you. :)

I don’t know the games you linked, but all the games from nimblebit and from kairosoft are sim games where you put people to work and you have to wait for them to finish.
I’ve played Tiny Tower, Pocket Planes, disco zoo, and Dungeon Village 2. None of them require an internet connection, some have ads which give you a boost, and some have paid tiers to remove the ads.

Messier43 OP ,

From those, dungeon village sounds interesting, does it progress while I’m away?

Mirodir , in Looking for Long-Term Games

Have you heard of The Longing? It doesn’t tick all your boxes but it is definitely a long term game that has you make slow, real-time progress while the real time clock of 400 days is ticking down. Not really management sim progress though.

On the more managy side, I’ve had some fun with Factory Idle. Essentially mini-Factorio as an idle game.

usrtrv ,

The Longing is great! Very unique game.

Messier43 OP ,

The longing sounds awesome :D

Cuttlersan , in Looking for Long-Term Games

Not quite what you’re looking for, but I think you might enjoy Worldbox for a nice and relaxed, long-term game! It’s a fun god game with the twist that the inhabitants of your worlds are alive and doing their own thing, be that farming, building cities and kingdoms, forming empires, or making alliances and waging wars all without your input (although you can meddle in the affairs of the world as much as you wish). It’s free (with a single $7 premium purchase if you love the game and want to support the dev).

iOS: apps.apple.com/us/app/…/id1450941371

Android: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mkarpen…

Steam: …steampowered.com/…/WorldBox__God_Simulator/

Messier43 OP ,

That sounds promising, I prefer paying over ads as well 👏

Eggyhead , in Looking for Long-Term Games

It’s an older game, but I like to revisit pixel people every once in a while. It’s a mobile game with some mtx that you can ignore. It’s like a city builder where you can mix worker classes together to unlock new types of workers and subsequently new types of buildings to add to your city.

Messier43 OP ,

Thx, but I Don’t like the theme and mtx :-s
