Considering the fact fediverse tries to be open, it’s unreasonable to have deals with a company such as meta.

because of that kill it before it enters, with defederate the meta / pro meta instances

Armando3996 ,

Not if WE have anything to do with it.

Edit: Memmy just sent 3(?) comments instead of one?

ZodiacSF1969 ,

Lol yeh there’s still some wrinkles to be ironed out, I was accidentally posting loads of times because Jerboa told me my comment didn’t go through when really it did.

Yeah, and they’ve been contacting big instance admins already: hub.fosstodon.org/facebook-fosstodon-fedi

amanvelani OP ,

This is really insightful! Thank you for sharing

stonemilker ,
@stonemilker@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

No problem! You can find admins and users talking a lot about this by searching for the and hashtags, lots of instances are preemptively defederating from Meta domains, although the software hasn’t implemented federation yet

amanvelani OP ,

IMHO waiting to see how threads is implemented then the admins should decide if they want to defederate or not.

stonemilker ,
@stonemilker@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Agreed. I have an account on Fosstodon and I like how they handled it. Not too friendly with Meta, not jumping on the bandwagon when we don’t even know how it works yet

Pseu ,
@Pseu@kbin.social avatar

With the hazard that such a large organization has, and the likely vested interest Meta has in destroying or absorbing the Fediverse, I feel that the default should be defederate, and only if Meta has proven to be acting in good faith, we can federate with them.

Sanctus ,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Instant defederate.

Carnelian ,

It’s literally the okay we’ll make our own space meme lol

Please just keep them out

Slartibartfast ,

I'd have to agree. Facebook polluted up the social media landscape with their gross business tactics, to the point where many people ditched traditional social media entirely and created/moved to the fediverse. Now they're getting ready to start dumping their toxic sludge here too, and I'd hope that most of the popular areas of the fediverse would just shut them out entirely. They deserve zero goodwill from anybody and are almost guaranteed to be bad-faith actors IMO.

I'm not holding out hope, however. I assume they'll play nice for the first year or two, integrate with everything, and then enshittify this as well. It's just the way things go.

aeternum ,

it was a nice two months while it lasted.

Sanctus ,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

It doesn’t have to be like that here. If we don’t like it we can spin up our own instances. If everyone is already here it wouldn’t even be painful. The accounts mean nothing here. Theres no karma or awards, just how it should be.

Slartibartfast ,

I hope so! Just from personal experience, my whole online life so far has been a loop of moving to a cool platform with a good community, watching it slowly degrade into a toxic cesspool as more and more corporations fiddle with it, then hopping ship to the next one and watching that one gradually collapse too.

It'd be nice to get out of that cycle and find a good place to just hang out.

@001100010010@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Ew, lets defederate them. Don’t need the corporate propaganda here.

amanvelani OP ,

At least by this more people will come to know about fediverse.

PrivateOnions ,

Lemmy noob here. How does one defederate

fraydabson ,

Each instance has the ability to defederate another instance so it will be up to each instance admin to decide.

I’m sure we will see more of this as the fediverse continues to explode. Which is an awesome feature to be able to find an instance who you agree / like and can always switch by making a new account. Hopefully they implement way to copy subscriptions from account to account.

That just harms us, no? We can’t see their content but they can see ours.

001100010010 ,
@001100010010@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

No we cant see each others content.

stevedidWHAT , (edited )
@stevedidWHAT@lemmy.world avatar

But the reality is that both could still see either, either way is content visibility that interesting? When the whole of the internet is just an echo chamber for information that someone off the internet found, it’s only going to get muddied down.

If we’re talking about generative content that’s not cut and dry, that too can be replicated or tweaked to produce something of equal or greater value to some extent.

Idk, overall I don’t think we should allow people who abuse their users and their data into our system more than the public already has access to.

Ultimately no special treatment should be given to them.

amanvelani OP ,

How defederation works Now take that example post from earlier, the one on beehaw.org. The “true” version of the post is on beehaw.org but the post is still hosted on both instances (again, it has a copy hosted on all instances). Let’s say someone with an account on beehaw.org comments on that post. That comment is going to be sent to every version of that post via ActivityPub, as the “true” version has been updated. That is, every version EXCEPT lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works. So users on lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works won’t get that comment, because we’ve been defederated from beehaw.org. If we write a comment, it will only be visible from accounts on lemmy.world, because we posted to a copy, but our copy is now out of sync with the “true” version. So we can appear to interact with the post, but those interactions are ONLY visible by other lemmy.world accounts, since our comments aren’t send to other versions. As the “true” version is hosted on beehaw, and we no longer get beehaw updates due to defederation, we will not see comments from ANY other community on those posts (including from other defederated instances like sh.itjust.works).

The same goes for posting to beehaw communities. We can still do that. However, the “true” version of those communities are the ones on beehaw, so our posts will not be shared to other instances via ActivityPub. And all of this is true for Beehaw users with our communities. Beehaw users can continue to see and interact with Lemmy.world communities, but those interactions are only visible to other Beehaw users, since the “true” versions of the Lemmy.world communities (the ones sent to/synced with every other instance) is the Lemmy.world one.

Communities on other instances, for example lemmy.ml, are unaffected by this. Lemmy.world and beehaw.org users will still be able to interact with those communities, but posts/comments from lemmy.world users won’t be visible to beehaw.org users, as defederation prevents our posts/comments from being sent to the version of these posts hosted on beehaw.org. However, as the “true” version is the one on the third instance, we can still see everything from beehaw.org users. So we see a more filled in version than the beehaw users.

Explained here when beehaw.org was defederated.

3rdBlueWizard ,

Absolutely. Gonna set up my own Lemmy instance so I can defederate any corporate instance. If other people want to accept their smallpox blankets, that’s on them.

livingina ,
oatmilkmaid ,

Yes

amanvelani OP ,

This could be something!

Puffymumpkins ,

It would indeed be one of the things that exist

amanvelani OP ,

Yes true! I personally will never use it because it’s meta!!

Puffymumpkins ,

Alternatively, maybe silicon valley tech bros live in an alternate reality where the fediverse is mainstream, and Zuckerbot thinks he’s just joining in on a popular thing. Idk how he expects to make money on this though. Maybe it’s just a way to make shareholders excited so they throw money at him.

FlihpFlorp ,

I’d say it’s more hopping on the buzzword train and maybe even following through. Although you can check my comment history I don’t much about this federation and instance stuff I don’t see how a for profit company finds a home in a non profit whatever-lemmy-is. Plus on top of that even if they somehow did become prominent I’m sure all the lemmy admins would eventually great a single server or small network servers that are private from meta

SCmSTR ,

It's directly attacking twitter and eee fediverse.

Takapapatapaka ,
@Takapapatapaka@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not an expert on how the social media make money, but from what i know it is created upon the information they gather (either personnal information or content, that they can then sell to advertisers or thing like that). So the more data they collect, the more they are able to sell i guess ? And i think that because fediverse already generates data for free (and will do so more and more), people in the business of selling this kind of data are eager to get access it Only my humble opinion, not sure at all if this is theway it works

Marxine ,
@Marxine@lemmy.world avatar

They have other ways to gain aside from data collection. Manipulation of public opinion is another possibility.
