Has anybody considered running a Mobilizon server?

cross-posted from: slrpnk.net/post/3186183

I was shocked to see that there are no English-language Mobilizon servers. It seems like it may be an ideal secondary service for certain existing fediverse communities and was wondering if anybody here had considered it.

For those unaware, Mobilizon looks to fill the role of something like Facebook groups for the fediverse. I believe it is compatible with both Mastodon and Lemmy through the groups actor in the ActivityPub spec but provides additional functionality dealing with scheduled events and shared resources.

There are many fediverse servers with events capabilities.

I like that Mobilizon have groups as well, but for events some people prefer other implementations, as their UX is simpler.

I ran it on my home server just to play with it. It’s very nice, but the main problem is with adoption. I’m a metalhead and I attend a lot of concerts in my city and asked friends if they’d be interested in having this kind of server and ditch facebook and they ALL said no, “because it’s not convenient” :-(

Well, Mobilizon is made by a French open source collective (Framasoft), so it’s very popular in France, but also in Germany and other european countries.

I don’t know much about the codebase or the alternatives, but this is definitely a niche that we should fill. I think region based instances could spin them up too.

I tried running an instance of it to go with my regional Mastodon instance but no one was interested in using it. The UX was also really strange at the time.

Would it be worth checking out now, or is it still not really worth it?

It wasn’t a bad platform. I think it’s worth checking out. I’m not sure if the UX has changed, but even if it hasn’t it might work for some people. Just after having used things like Facebook Groups/Events and Meetup.com it didn’t really make sense to me and a few people who used my instance.

My hot take is people on mastodon are there because they want defederated twitter and aren’t as nerdy about trying new online social experiences
