This might not be exactly the kind of thing you’re asking, but – as an English speaker (and American) – it always surprises me just how universal the word “okay” is.
That surprises me as well. Also “taxi.” And there are very few languages where the word for “tea” isn’t etymologically related to either “te,” “cha,” or “chai.”
the almost cultish consumption of coca cola. in northern indiana we have a fair amount of “authentic” and “american” mexican restaurants. almost all of them serve coca cola in a glass bottle from mexico. it tastes so much better than the plastic bottle/can american coca cola
Browse Lemmy, rewatch my favorite Movies, listen to Music, don’t shower, sleep long hours, try to study, masturbate to 2D girls, randomly feel hopeless about my future, hug my pillow pretending it to be my non-existent girlfriend
Lol I guess we have lots in common then lol it’s frustrating because the only thing that entertains me is the internet and when it get boring I don’t know what to do
I enjoy it. Technical growing pains aside, it actually feels like a network of communities. From another angle, I like that it feels inconsequential to block communities that I find uninteresting or too thin skinned.
Some days are slow, but thats organic and I actually prefer that more than the alternative; thoughtless, soulless reposts being cranked out by bots and upvote hoors. I legit block communities ran that way here.
Ehhh, not as nearly as much content as reddit or Twitter, so you end up seeing the same posts over and over.
I’m hoping to see more instances and communitues pop up. I do enjoy the sorta wild west feel it has with users from different instances hating each other
Content content content. Many of the times I want to talk about something a little niche but there’s no one to talk to. I have to hop back to reddit. So yeah. But it’s getting better slowly
I know I am a hypocrite. I try to contribute comments, not at all intelligent, but still better than nothing. I am thinking about opening a community about something I like doing
Agreed I think the apps and custom interfaces have come a long way and are already serviceable. The real piece missing are the organically grown niche communities being active and years of content backlog to build upon. Sadly this can’t easily be forced.
I’m also missing some communities (for example active financial/stock ones), but I sadly don’t think I have the time to moderate one myself. So I’m in a similar situation as you and just try to comment a bit more than usual
Just English. I’ve tried to learn Spanish repeatedly and it didn’t stick, so I decided to do something completely different. My girlfriend speaks Russian fluently, so it seemed like a logical language to try. It’s not as hard as I was expecting, honestly.
I also had this problem. Eventually I realized there isn’t a time limit and if it takes me 10 years to become fluent, I’ll still be fluent at the end.
Using that logic, I stopped trying to cram lessons like I’m studying for finals again and just do like 10 minutes a day. And if I miss a day or two then thats fine.
Maurugoto has free Japanese online self study courses for beginners. It has helped me commit to actually learning Japanese and I’m currently somewhere in between N4 and N5.
