Android 14 won't allow me to delete files from inside other apps except for the file browser

For example, I’m using a mp3 player and as I try to delete songs, it shows a message “Failed to delete file”. I have faced similar issues in other apps as well. Is there a work around for this? Also here is the obligatory " fuck you google"

Apps can delete files using the appropriate APIs that were introduced somewhere around Android 11, but never actually enforced until Android 14. Apps that haven’t been maintained for three to four years will still work, but get permission errors for certain operations.

For your outdated app, try going to Settings > Privacy > Permission manager > Files and media in your phone’s settings and check if you can enable some kind of “all files and folders” permission.

Feature, not a bug. Properly working apps that are updated, correctly ask for the permission to specific folders, and are able to touch the files. This is an issue with apps written for Android pre-10 but were never updated to the new file access permit model. I concur, fuck Google, but in this particular instance your beef is with the app developer. Millions of app handle user space files with no issues.

From a security standpoint i prefer apps to , by default, not have free reign access to my phone storage. For example facebook should not be able to access my picture, music or whatever without my explicit permissions.

What should happen is that the app should ask for permissions, and thats what has happened on all my phones. Id see if your mp3 player app needs an update, has incorrect permissions or just flat put has become obsolete. Ive used vlc for a long time on my phone with no issues
( though to be fair, im still on android 13 )

what are you describing here? are the files located in a shared location (eg. your default Music folder), and you cant delete them using another app?
