#1 would be the phone app, pretty handy for calling people in real time. without it, I would probably have to carry a phone too.

#2 Would be SMS, these are quite handy for quick messages without interrupting something important.

#3 GPS maps, I have the most amazing sense of orientation, that basically guarantees I never end up where I’m supposed to, unless I have GPS.

You may take these functions for granted children. But back in the day, maps were something you had in the glove compartment of your car. Phones were something you had on the wall, with a long wire hanging out of them, to connect you to a wired network. Messages was something you send on paper, put a stamp on, and posted through the postal service.

Of course compared to back then, a smartphone has plenty more clever functions. Like the calculator, which we did either in the head or more complex calculations were done on paper.

But I guess these aren’t what you kids were looking for. But they are actually quite amazing, even if you take them for granted. ;)

SuperSpruce , in Should I delete the Google app from my phone?

I disabled the Google app on my phone and my phone still seems to work fine

As a longtime android user, thank God they’re finally listening and focusing on the most important problems!!!

FairEmail: I hated reading email on my phone, till I found it. I was so happy that I already paid for it 3 times (optional!) just to give something back to the dev.

Waze: it belongs to Google now, but I like it much better because it's like a social network for navigation and maps. You can also edit the maps by yourself. Another advantage is that it shows speed limits and warns you about police while driving.

sketched ,

I also really like fairemail for it's privacy focused approach but often the formatting in emails looks weird.. e. g. Paypal is especially bad :(

Diabolo96 , in What are your favorite (FOSS if possible) launchers?

Neo-launcher looks pretty close to nova launcher. It just needs the recently installed/updated / frequently used tabs on the search panel and it’ll be the best. Sadly , the devs seems to have lost interest and haven’t update it since 2022.

Like on ios? Where you have the album cover as lockscreen background?

sunglocto OP , in Should I delete the Google app from my phone?

Thank you everyone for your repsponses - I’ve decided to take the route of uninstalling Google via ADB.

If anyone is wondering, this is the conmand I used to do it:

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox

I don’t know how I feel about the move from a flat logo back to the old shaded, gradient 3D look, but I am definitely a fan of the font!

I can’t recommend any but looks like some others in this thread have suggested some

Windy has been great, it gives a really nice overview of data, and lets you pick from 5 different sources, as well as compare each source to local weather stations to figure out which had the closest predictions in the past.
