There’s… no details at all other than “it’s happening”?
well, this is a press release strictly speaking (and unions tend to delay public release of specific details of such deals anyways–although, if the allegations are correct i have no idea why they’d do this in this case).
As I've been expecting all along, the competition is not going to be between humans and AIs. It'll be between humans that use AIs and those that don't, and the ones that don't will be at a big disadvantage. SAG-AFTRA saw the writing on the wall and wanted to keep its monopoly on what voices are "allowed."
Good, after seeing that Skyrim mod that added a chatgpt follower I immediately saw corpo execs salivating over all the free content they’d get.
I think most gamers love the idea of NPCs that you can have active conversations with. However I think we should fully compensate the voice actors who are lending their voice to the trained model. Something like that can easily be exploited by companies to underpay workers.
I’m glad to see SAG is standing up to the video game industry, which is notorious for mistreating its workers.
Hopefully, after seeing the damage from the WGA/ SAG Hollywood strike, the video game studios will take this threat seriously and negotiate in good faith enough to not warrant another strike.
I also hope that SAG standing up for themselves may inspire other game development employees to unionize and stand up for themselves as well.
