Yeah federated platforms like lemmy are a potential solution. I would guess they aren’t more popular because nobody directly profits from the success of these platforms, and since no one entity has control of it people in positions of power may be wary of adopting it.
Also a distributed platform is pretty much always going to be more complicated. This scares off the casual users that make up the majority of social media usernames.
Look at Linux; you can be more open, better on paper, cheaper, and even easier to use in some cases, but the success of online platforms is not a meritocracy. It’s a pageant.

LONDON, Aug 16 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was committed to the government’s mechanism for increasing state pensions even though it is likely to cost billions of pounds more than usual given high inflation.
“Of course the government is committed to its policy on the triple lock,” Sunak told ITV News on Wednesday when asked whether he would stick to the pledge despite the rate of inflation.
“Now there is a statutory, a legal, process for determining the increase in pensions and benefits that happens in the autumn and that’s where those final decisions are made.”
Data published earlier on Wednesday showed Britain’s headline rate of inflation dropped sharply to 6.8% in July but remained more than three times the Bank of England’s target.

Aug 16 (Reuters) - A scientist at Harvard used Google’s cloud platform to clone a supercomputer for a heart disease study, in a novel move that other researchers could follow to get around a shortage of powerful computing resources and speed up their work.
The study simulated a therapy that aims to dissolve blood clots and tumor cells in the human circulatory system that required an enormous amount of computing power that typically can be harnessed with a supercomputer, according to Harvard professor Petros Koumoutsakos.
In the U.S., there are only a handful of supercomputers that are capable of running the billions of calculations to accurately mimic the conditions in Koumoutsakos’s study.
To eliminate the bottlenecks researchers and companies such as Citadel that need an enormous amount of computing resources only found in supercomputers have begun to turn to the public cloud.
They are designed for millions of individual, relatively small computing tasks - things such as streaming video, serving webpages or database access.
Modifying cloud infrastructure to behave like a supercomputer requires changes in the software, networking and physical design of the hardware, Magro said.
