open.nytimes.com

morph3ous , to youshouldknow in YSK about the New York Times' Tor onion service

I used the .onion link using Onion Browser on iOS. The front page loaded fine, but articles were paywalled. This leads me to believe that it is not browsing through Tor that is allowing the paywall bypass, but rather something Tor Browser is doing.

One experiment might be to go to nytimes.com using Tor Browser and see if it also still bypasses the paywall. If my theory is correct, it just might…

Several news outlets have something similar. The BBC has an Onion domain for example.

I did not know this. I never looked into it, mostly because the BBC isn’t kept behind a paywall lol Makes sense, though.

Okay I thought it was a the onion service after reading the headline and was confused a bit

I can see how that’d be a little confusing, especially if you’re just finding out about Tor lol

I thought it was the dementor universe version of the Times where every article is rewritten as shameless satire and sarcasm.

MegaUltraChicken ,

I would use this service.

Viking_Hippie ,

Hell, I’d very much prefer it!

lolcatnip ,

The title would’ve been a lot clearer if it mentioned Tor.

Done.

Subscription wall

Hence, I provided a link to The Tor Project and the onion directly in the post.

Papanca ,

Which is what i used of course, and i still got the subscription wall

The link provided with the title of the post isn’t necessary to click. I only put it there to provide a little bit of legitimacy to the post. It’s the NYT’s own domain hosting a page that provides the onion service and some info about it.

If you have Tor installed on your machine, you can copy/paste the onion at the end of the post into Tor’s address bar once you’re connected to Tor. This should navigate directly to the NYT’s front page. Note, if you’re part of the uninitiated, you must use Tor to navigate to the link. You shouldn’t see the page I linked with the post.

Even on Tor, if you use the clear web site provided in the link, yes, you will see the box asking for a subscription. You can click the x to get rid of it.

I hope this helps out.

Ah, ok. I just noticed the popup. Of course i did click the link that was indicated in the post itself, not the title.

Does the onion version require the use of JavaScript? That’s what stops most onion users from using onion versions of popular websites.

EDIT: Just tried this out: Reduced functionality without JavaScript

Looks like most images don’t work but text is available and most articles seem accessible. No ads from what I can see.

I also used the link you posted. It loaded but was still paywalled. :( But I am using Onion Browser on iOS. So maybe it is something Tor browser is doing and not because their .onion site lacks the paywall.
