I’m just worried this marks then end of the glory days of free speech and the internet and the world will never be the same again.
Musk got a lot to answer for but I also respect him in a lot of ways.
Free speech is an ideal I would die for and I hate seeing it disappearing.
(Also pre preempting any American acktually reply. Let’s me make myself clear. I do not give a shit in anyway what your government has to say on free speech in this context. Free speech exists as a concept out there in the world it wasn’t invented and isolated to some sheet of paper some “Gods” wrote down 100 years ago, they don’t control what I think)
As long as I have been on the internet the ideals of the internet have been declining.
Which as I seen it were people working together to solve a common goal. Accessibility. Exchange of information. Discussion based where ideas are exchanged, dissected and people learn and grow.
Now this isn’t about twitter exactly because I have never been one for twitter. I’m much more interested in seeing ideas and views being valued for what they are, not for valuing the person and following their views. But the absolute disgust the common man has over a space where anyone can say what they want scares me. People only want to hear what they want to hear, they want to be controlled and those they disagree with silenced.
That’s why this marks the end of the glory days because one else is going to run a big site of free speech ever again. This was what I believe to be the last attempt. Maybe the fediverse will do something being less centralised but who knows?
He made a big show about free speech and he got slated for it.

I’m not sure what you aren’t getting. Did Musk talk a lot about free speech? Yes. Did he do things that were pro free speech? Yes. Did he get slated by a lot of people for both those two points? Yes. So why would anyone or any business try the free speech again?
All that above is an argument in isolation. I don’t see why that wouldn’t hold as a solid justification that free speech wouldn’t be tried again. What is confusing in that?
Has Musk done non free speech things? Yes. Was there a big outcry about it and people saying that is around and free speech is a goal? No, not really. People use it as a lolz got you thing. But as a fundamental argument of people copying that, people are for it. His lack of free speech has been seen as a good thing.
No. Again, he banned people for saying things he didn’t like. Not illegal things. Things he didn’t want them to say, including journalists who reported on the bannings. How is that free speech? Why is this not getting through to you?
Free speech the way you describe ended with internet 2.0. There is nothing about Musk’s Twitter that is free speech. He banned the word cis as a fucking slur.
Also if you would die for free speech why are you just sitting on your ass then?
I’ve spent quite a lot of time trying to get The Hell mods running on Linux. Finally today I managed it. I wrote up some instructions (below) and provided the special Wine prefix were required to get the game running. Please let me know if you have any issues or have suggestions for improvement!
It was very difficult to find a way to run this on Linux - so I wrote this guide to help others who I know have also beat their heads against the table. The trick which finally allowed me to run it was I lucked into building a Wine prefix which is apparently crucially important to running the game. I have no idea what makes this Wine prefix special, but I’ve tested it on four computers (Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04, & Pop!OS) and it works on them all.
Downloads
You need the following four files
The mod: TH3_vx.xxxx.zip, and music pack: TH3_music_vx.x.zip
Available on the game CD-ROM, a copy from GOG, etc.
Wine setup and install
We’ll create the Wine prefix, install The Hell into that prefix, and then set up Lutris to point to it. This guide will create the prefix at ~/Games/diablo-the-hell, but you can put it elsewhere if you like.
Unpack the wine prefix file diablo-the-hell-wine-prefix.tar.xz to ~/Games/diablo-the-hell
Create a Windows folder for the game. You can use the UI or the terminal: mkdir ~/Games/diablo-the-hell/drive_c/Program Files/diablo-the-hell/
Unzip the mod file TH3_vx.xxxx.zip to ~/Games/diablo-the-hell/drive_c/Program Files/diablo-the-hell/
Unzip the music file TH3_music_vx.x.zip to ~/Games/diablo-the-hell/drive_c/Program Files/diablo-the-hell/
Copy diabdat.mpq to ~/Games/diablo-the-hell/drive_c/Program Files/diablo-the-hell/
Open ~/Games/diablo-the-hell/drive_c/Program Files/diablo-the-hell/config.ini and make the following changes:
set DDraw onVery important!!
set fps 60 Limits frames per second (optional)
set startvideo off Skips opening cinematic on startup (optional)
set screenwidth 1920 Sets resolution width (optional)
set screenheight 1080 Sets resolution height (optional)
Lutris config
Press + to add a new game, and set the following:
Name: "Diablo - The Hell"
Runner: Wine
Click Game Options, set the following:
Executable: ~/Games/diablo-the-hell/drive_c/Program Files/diablo-the-hell/TH2.exe (for The Hell 2), or ~/Games/diablo-the-hell/drive_c/Program Files/diablo-the-hell/TH3.exe (for The Hell 3)
Wine prefix: ~/Games/diablo-the-hell/
Click Save
Optional, if the game art doesn’t auto-populate:
Right Click on “Diablo - The Hell” -> Configure
Next to “Identifier” click Change
Change text to "diablo"
Click Apply -> Save
Click Lutris under “Sources” on the left -> Community Installers
Search for “diablo”, and wait for results to populate (the search downloads the art)
Exit the community installer section
Final thoughts
Important note on running the game: the opening UI menu has a visual bug But with the mouse & arrow keys (& some patience) you can navigate the menus to create a character. Once through the initial screens the game runs perfectly fine.
The special Wine prefix was built using Bottles, however Bottles is not required to run the game (these instructions use Lutris). If anyone can learn what is special about this prefix which makes the game work please let me know!
Despite what I’ve read online this mod works fine with DXVK. I don’t recommend disabling DXVK in Lutris when running the mod (contrary to what others have).
In case anyone asks: the specific Wine version doesn’t seem to matter. I had success with: lutris-GE-Proton8-8, lutris-7.2-2, and soda-7.0-4
Way too relatable. I'm very hesitant to tell people about my ASD exactly because even if they do believe at me, they always start acting different afterwards. Not even necessarily infantalisation, just different.
I'm just lucky to be high-funtioning enough that I can pass off my social ineptitude as a result of being highly introverted (which is half true), and my tics aren't very noticible to those who don't know me very well.
In my area they’re alongside roads a lot, and we get the occasional post on NextDoor that shows a picture of a kid with a red and swollen face, and the parents says “OMG my kid was playing with those pretty plants by the road, beware!” It really is not fun. Thankfully, as far as I know, all symptoms eventually recede.
They’re not just by roads though, a guy I know has a decent amount of land and there was a fairly massive poison ivy bush on it, that he burned in a controlled burn. I wasn’t there, but he showed me the video, it’s quite impressive. There’s also a satisfying feeling to it, it feels like payback against those fuckers! 😉
Burning poison ivy is really risky, you can inhale the burning urushiol and get severe lung problems. Definitely not the way to remove the stuff if you can help it.
I’ll gladly trust you with it, I have no idea. Hopefully they knew it and found a way to do it safely. I think they contracted a professional for it, so hopeful the professional knew what he was doing.
When you think about it, there were a lot of populist movements growing through Twitter. It probably pissed a lot of wealthy, powerful people off.
Then Musk and Zuckerberg were called to private meetings with the president, weren’t they? And Twitter was taken over and shut down. Then Threads, owned by Facebook who is known to help out law enforcement quite happily as well as track everything, takes off as an alternative.
Seriously. I didn’t join Lenny to get updates on twitter and Reddit. Apollo had a keyword filter I used to block musk trump and kanye. Desantis reddit and twitter are first on the chopping block when I get that ability.
