I mean… Is Linux even a challenge to anyone that just needs basic stuff? (Ubuntu, fedora, etc)

I only have trouble trying to install shit that’s not in repos.

curiousgoo ,

Keeping the discussion of running Windows applications through Wine/Proton aside; there are a lot of little things which happen to annoy me while I am using my PopOS install for example the most recent one is my headphones don’t play any sound from the left year, it works properly on my other devices…

I’m willing to make it work, but most general users wouldn’t be. This statement continues to be true even after the huge amounts of progress Linux community has made to make a better experience.

Agreed! Very good. If I could do one thing right now, just one thing, I would start a cat rescue non-profit. The trouble is at my present mental and physical health, such an adventure is impossible because I depend on the benefits and economic stability that my employment in state government provides for me. But I can still dream.

I feel you! I volunteered at a cat shelter years ago when I was unemployed, it was one of the best things I’ve done. Sure, you have to deal with stinky litter and cleaning enclosures, but the kitties were so happy to get cuddles and play.

housepanther ,
@housepanther@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I honestly never minded cleaning litter boxes. I still volunteer two Saturdays a month at mine. There was this one kitten we named Maddie which is sort of after me because my name in real life is Matt. She was my little shadow. She had the most pitifully sad meow that tugs at the heart strings. Anyhow, when I would come she would meow really loudly to sleep in my hoodie hand warming pocket while I cleaned litter boxes and food bowls. She eventually got adopted by a sweet little girl whom I know will cherish her.

Nvidia. Within two weeks, their shitty drivers broke my system twice. If I didn’t already know about that beforehand, I would’ve probably quit linux for good after that experience.

jaykstah ,

Out of curiosity, did you download the nvidia drivers with the distro’s package manager or did you go to nvidia’s website and do there installer thing? When I had an nvidia card I had plenty of problems over the years but I specifically remember that using the installer from nvidia’s site caused all kinds of hell to break loose haha

When I was in the military, the shooting instructors said they preferred training females because they haven’t been trained poorly by somebody else.

EDIT: Designating recruits as male and female is the way the military does things. I don’t use the terms male and female when referring to groups of humans. I felt the need to clarify since somebody already took offense.

You’ve obviously never been in the military, because it’s definitely “females”.

Kryomaani ,

I’m from a country with mandatory conscription for men, so yes, I’ve been in the military and I’ve seen the misogyny (among countless other varieties of bigotry) rampant in that system from front row seats. We had a handful of female volunteer conscripts, as well as one of my NCOs was a woman, and it was blatantly obvious they were not recieving the same treatment as the majority of us who were men (and not in a good way, if there was any room for confusion).

Experiences like that are among the key reasons I’m not happy to see people keep perpetuating that kind of behavior, especially in other traditionally male-centric contexts like the IT industry and even here on this forum.

ScrimbloBimblo , (edited )

Whether or not you personally agree with the military’s choice of language is not relevant. You’re assuming the trainer agrees with your political views, but you weren’t there, so you have no idea what they said or didn’t say.

@oce@jlai.lu avatar

In French, the literal translation of female and male, are only used for animals in the common language, but I have been taught that in English it is ok to use those for humans in common language. Is it not the case in your region?

Hazzia ,

It’s technically grammatically correct, but outside of a medical context (or military, as stated above), it has, in recent years especially, been heavily associated with incels and other creepy kinds of people. So in effect no, it’s not generally considered good to refer to women as “female” in day-to-day speech.

Examples:

“Females simply don’t have the emotional capacity that men do, which is why they’re so quick to cheat and betray” - typical incel line

“Today on the train I saw a beautiful female with silky hair and clear skin” - kinda sounds like a serial killer

AccountMaker ,

I don’t really see a problem with saying things like “my female friends” or “my female colleagues”, when it’s used as an adjective.

Kryomaani , (edited )

Female/male are used in English as adjectives when describing humans, but as nouns they only refer to animals. “She is a woman” and “She is a female actress” are both okay but calling women “females” is purposefully demeaning and sexist. I do not believe there is any regional difference in this, nor should we really care about such since there are no regions when we’re on a global forum.

oce ,
@oce@jlai.lu avatar

nor should we really care about such since there are no regions when we’re on a global forum

English being a third language for me, I’m actually interested in understanding the differences coming from different cultures that I may not be aware of. I find global forum to be nice for this reason, although they tend to be dominated by the Northern American culture.

kboy101222 ,

I can’t speak with certainty, but I can speak subjectively on this -

I have family and friends all over the US (I’m only missing someone from both Dakotas to complete the collection), so I’ve heard damn near every accent, regional dialect, language, etc that there is to hear in the US, including some near dead native languages and Pennsylvania Dutch.

The only people I know that use “females” instead of women are either in the military like OP or they’re sexist. Sometimes it’s blatantly misogynistic, sometimes they’re casually sexist.

Or they’re both. It’s frequently both.

    “Males” sounds just as awkward in such a context.

    Kryomaani ,

    Perhaps because people aren’t going around calling others “males” to demean them?

    These are not difficult concepts if you turn on your brain.

    grandkaiser ,

    Nah. In the military, you aren’t “men and women” you are “soldiers” (or sailors, Marines, or airmen). If you are referring specifically to a specific gender such as a “female” soldier, then that’s what you call them.

    No one says “women soldiers” except maybe a civilian.

    Kind of short-sighted by Christian to do this. He could put up an instance, make an Apollo update (not trivial) and migrate a bunch of users onto Lemmy. Getting a decent percentage of Apollo users over here would be good for a producer of a popular app based client. I’d wager operating his own instance would end up being cheaper than Reddit’s API fees. He could even benefit from donations to keep his servers running.

    jflorez ,

    Before 3.9 the lack of type hints made it a nightmare for large projects. Strong typing is, among other benefits, a way of self documentation and helps IDEs with auto-complete. If I use Python I always use type hints and if I have to use JS sigo with Typescript instead

    pazukaza ,

    Python without type hints is torture. I always need to have the fucking docs opened for anything, and if the docs are bad you’re screwed, get ready to read the source code. Like fucking hell man, just let me autocomplete this shit…

    Lack of backwards compatibility for older versions of software/games requiring older libs. All I see it lots of pointing back and forwards but it doesn’t get solved.

    Lack of legacy drivers for graphics cards. I want to run a new distribution on my old hardware, using graphics acceleration and no screen-tearing. Is that too much to ask?

    If a program is executed through a wm, have it submit errors to the wm as well so I can see why it’s not running, instead of seeing a loading cursor for 2 seconds and then nothing.

    I want to be able to do 99-100% of what I want to do using a GUI. Even installing drivers and changing settings. I don’t want to have to change things in a text editor just so I can have a simple shortcut on the desktop. I’ve learned how to do it and I can do it in my dreams now, but that doesn’t mean I like doing it.

    lumbearjack , to linux in What are the main challenges in Linux adoption for New users, and how can it be addressed?

    For me it’s always been partly about ease of use, but the biggest thing is a superficial one. I just really enjoy a beautiful UI and slick UX. In these categories Windows is deep in the trash, but the bar for me is MacOS. An OS needs to make what I’m using it for easier and nicer, not have me spending time just making it work.

    I haven’t dipped my toe into the distro test pool in a few years, but every time I do I find myself spending more time sorting out the OS than just using it, and we’ll, they just haven’t been pretty to look at.

    I think that’s what it comes down to, distros can be decently developed but are often severely lacking in the design department.

    I’d definitely love to know if any distros out there for that sort of vibe!

    DarkwinDuck , to linux in What are the main challenges in Linux adoption for New users, and how can it be addressed?

    To be honest, one part is what everyone mentioned here. Not being preinstalled and all that.

    The other part is that unfortunately at least according to my own expirence as a Linux noob a few years ago some Linux communities can be very toxic. If you’re asking questions of how to do X and someone comes along and is all “why do you even want to do X if you could also do Y? Which is something entirely different but also does something vaguely similar”

    That’s one if the things.

    And then other curiosities. I cannot for example for the life of me get my main monitor to work under Linux with any new Kernel version. My Laptop just refuses to output to it or the second monitor attached via Display port daisychaining. On the older version it works, on the newer it’s broken. I have tried troubleshooting this problem for over half a year and it’s still broken. And that’s out of the Box on Ubuntu LTS…

    So i don’t really understand this question. There are major roadblocks. With Wayland which is default for Ubuntu now those roadblock jist became bigger. Screensharing in multiple Apps including slack is outright broken unless you use the shitty webapp. The main player Office 365 largely doesn’t work at all on Linux. All these things that should work for a Desktop operating System don’t work out of the Box as they should.

    That’s why people aren’t using it and companies aren’t preinstalling it.

    This is correct. The natural numbers are better known as the counting numbers, and do not include 0 or the negative numbers. I personally think the classification is a bit bullshit given how they really only matter in meatspace. I have never seen the distinction between integers and natural numbers come up in real mathematics

    CHINESEBOTTROLL ,
    @CHINESEBOTTROLL@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Idk if you are trolling, but in most cases 0 is considered a part of the natural numbers. And there is a huge difference between the naturals and the integers: the naturals are for induction, the integers are for algebra.

    Lakso ,

    Depends on where you are! In some places it is more common to say that 0 is natural and in other’s not. Some argue it’s useful to have it N, some, say that it makes more historical and logical sense for 0 not to be in N and use N_0 when including it. It’s not a settled issue, it’s a matter of perspective.

    CHINESEBOTTROLL ,
    @CHINESEBOTTROLL@sh.itjust.works avatar

    I guess it depends on the place. But the arguments for not including seem futile, when

    • we use 0 to even write the other natural numbers
    • we define almost all of our algebraic objects (groups, rings/fields, modules/vector spaces, algebras) to include 0
    • we don’t do modular arithmetic with {1,…,n} that would be crazy

    Of course 0 vs no 0 only matters if you actually do arithmetic with it. If you only index you could just as well start with 5.

    (The only reasons I can think of to start at 1 is that 1 is the 1-st element then and the sequence (1/n) is defined for all natural n)

    Lakso ,

    Those are valid points and make some practical sense, but I’ve talked too much with mathematicians about this so let me give you another point of view.

    First of all, we do modular arithmetic with integers, not natural numbers, same with all those objects you listed.

    On the first point, we are not talking about 0 as a digit but as a number. The main argument against 0 being in N is more a philosophical one. What are we looking at when we study N? What is this set? “The integers starting from 0” seems a bit of a weird definition. Historically, the natural numbers always were the counting numbers, and that doesn’t include 0 because you can’t have 0 apples, so when we talk about N we’re talking about the counting numbers. That’s just the consensus where I’m from, if it’s more practical to include 0 in whatever you are doing, you use N0. Also the axiomatization of N is more natural that way IMO.

    CHINESEBOTTROLL ,
    @CHINESEBOTTROLL@sh.itjust.works avatar

    I’ve talked too much with mathematicians

    You are talking to one right now :) (not sure if a bachelors degree is enough to call yourself one)

    you can’t have 0 apples

    You can actually. In fact, right at this moment I have 0 apples. If 0 is not natural, then you have no way of describing the number of apples I have.

    There are a lot of concepts (degree of a polynomial, dimension of a space, cardinality of a set, in a graph) where 0 is a natural possibility.

    So I think 1 indexing is fine, I use it all the time, but to me 0 belongs with the natutals. I will say tho, that 0 does not make sense to me as an ordinal. “He finished the race in 0-th place”???

    sol , to linux in What are the main challenges in Linux adoption for New users, and how can it be addressed?

    Linux should be teach at school instead of windows. Most people assume Linux is harder only because they are not used to it. Once you get accustomed you realize that it’s even easier, for example in popular distros with package manager opening a terminal and write a 3 words command followed by the name of software, as hard as it may sound, it’s much easier and fast than using google to download shady .exe files that needs to be installed manually.

    Also people really needs to stop being lazy. You don’t jump into a car and drive it if you don’t know how to do it. If you are not down to spend 2 hours of your life learning how to use a machine you use daily you really should change mindset.
