Good, that we have specialists for both and nobody is advocating that everyone should be doing full-stack work… oh wait.

Specialists, ah I wish I could experience that. Maybe then I would be able to see my long lost love c++ again. Instead, I must give my love freely. Javascript, Java, Kubernetes, Go, many names flit through when profit is the goal. Someday maybe, hopefully, ChatGPT will end my tired soul.

Venator ,

As a full stack developer I can assure you I can easily produce the result displayed in both those panels in the image 😏

In fact, I probably will make both of those first intentionally or not.

“Full-stack” is just a term invented by stingy employers who try to get 2 for the price of 1

I can make HTML look alright if I have to and it’s simple enough requirements.

The real hell is making it look good in an email. Oh, you used something from the last 20 years of HTML/CSS progress? Well fuck you.

lichtmetzger ,

But that’s mostly because Outlook is still holding us back. Come on, Microsoft, please let it die in peace already.

Anticorp ,

They actually made it worse in the latest version! They went from using the CSS2 standard, which was already like 20 years old, to using MS Word as the rendering engine. I would like to find whoever was in charge of that idea and slap them with a large trout. My guess is that they got a bonus by laying off whatever team was in charge of the CSS2 integration and saved a bunch of money by utilizing another program attached to some other team’s budget. MS employees are always trying to shift their costs onto other teams.

Aceticon , to programmerhumor in Frontend vs backend

A proper backend developer would have the query be a URL using the GET method with a parameter that the user can fill-in directly in the address bar and the result be a text/plain page with just a bunch of numbers separated by pipe characters (or an application/json page with that info encoded as JSON if you wanna be fancy).

This has the added advantage of working both for humans and as an API for use in machine to machine communications via HTTP.

xrun_detected , to linux in Why does Nvidia hate linux?

nvidia has always been hostile to open source, as far back as i can remember.

back when nvidia bought 3dfx they took down the source code for the open 3dfx drivers within days, if not on the same day. i remember because i had just gotten myself a sweet voodoo 5 some weeks before that, and the great linux support was the reason i chose it… of course the driver code survived elsewhere, but it told me all i needed to know about that company.

also: linus’ rant wasn’t just a fun stunt, it was necessary to get nvidia to properly cooperate with the open source community if they want to keep making money running linux on their hardware.

They love to publish drivers that worked with like 1 release of X 5 years ago when the card came out and never update them.

Except when they update them and it breaks X.

I believe Sega has removed the DRM off of some of their Yakuza games after a while on steam, so I imagine this should drop off soon too.

Gmork OP ,
@Gmork@lemmy.ml avatar

I sure hope so.

I can somewhat understand a company putting Denuvo in a new game until they recoup costs, I still won’t buy it until then, but I can understand the logic.

Having said that, I feel it should be a priority to remove it once they have got their money back.

Like a dragon is several years old by now and they have games even older that still have denuvo…

Gmork OP ,
@Gmork@lemmy.ml avatar

Yep! I had the same reaction.

I was so close to buying it during the last sale and then realized it had Denuvo and noped outta that sale real quick.

I don’t know why Sega is so hellbent on putting Denuvo in so many of their releases… and then takes FOREVER to remove it, if they ever do.

Ugh…

HiddenLayer5 OP , (edited )

except for Zapp Branigan. I couldn’t stand that bastard.

Yeah, but as a story writer and worldbuilder I’m inclined to cut them some slack on Zapp. I’d say writing a balanced and well thought out morally-bad character or villain is the hardest thing in character development. Counterintuitively, you can’t make the reader genuinely hate them like many do with Zapp, even if they are the designated big baddie, because if they feel such strong negative emotions, they won’t want to keep reading/watching your story. The reader doesn’t have to agree with their ideology or actions, there is a misconception that the villain always needs to be a little right to be compelling, but that’s not necessarily true. Really the most important thing is you need to make sure that you’re not making a character that the reader can’t stand and reading their interactions an unpleasant experience. At the same time, you have to make their motives believable and make them evil enough that whatever punishment your plot has in store for them is actually justified, all while still retaining a basic level of sympathy in the reader. I feel that Mary Sue heroes are talked about way more, but Mary Sue villains are just as detrimental. I definitely struggle with this.

Rekorse ,

That's very insightful, are you a writer? Happen to have a blog you could share to learn more?

HiddenLayer5 OP , (edited )

Thank you so much! I’m an amateur writer as a hobby. I currently mainly do worldbuilding posts (on Lemmy!) and also do literary roleplays (basically like a Dungeons and Dragons style roleplay but entirely in text, where you take turns writing a story bit by bit). Eventually I want to turn my worldbuilding into (most likely) a web series of episodic novellas, already have the overarching plot outline mostly figured out but haven’t started writing my canon story yet.

If you’re interested, I post on !worldbuilding, !worldbuilding, and !worldbuilding, as well as on Reddit while the writing scene on Lemmy is still picking up.
