I like the idea to put lemmie in every word it is like with batman. Users should be called Lemmiathans.

666dollarfootlong , to android in What phone are you using?

I am typing this on my Pixel 7 (recommend me a Lemmy app please :D )

I had a 4a before this, I liked the finger print reader way better on the 4a but other than that my 7 is better, its the best and most expensive phone i’ve ever owned.

Before the 4a I had some random Honor and Huawei phones and I used to upgrade phones almost yearly which I felt was kinda depressing so I figured I should “invest” in a phone I could use for ~3 years.

The only Apple product i’ve had was some kind of iPod that I asked my uncle to copy cd’s onto, it was kinda cool i guess.

SweetSitty ,

I’m also using a Pixel, and the Jerboa app seems to be doing well (for the whole 20 minutes I’ve been using it so far).

reallychris , to linux in What distro(s) do you use?

xubuntu. when this install gets too messy i’m probably going to try the minimal edition and install my old openbox or awesome wm configs.

Hellebert , to technology in Slashdot -> Fark -> Digg -> Reddit -> Lemmy

Tried the official Reddit app today and boy people weren’t joking when they say it sucks. I thought it’d just be the usual experience plus some ads but I was totally wrong.

The official app doesn’t respect your subreddit subscriptions at all, instead force feeding you feeds of whatever their algorithm thinks will drive maximum engagement just like a shit version of Facebook. The “hot” etc functionality is completely stipped from it entirely.

Guess I’m here to stay on the fediverse now.

SharkEatingBreakfast ,

What absolutely sucks about this is that I had carefully curated my subscriptions on RIF in order not to exacerbate my dumb mental health issues.

Hell, I’ve read angry posts about people in recovery from addiction and alcohol saying how they keep seeing ads for beer or gambling and things like that.

It’s horrifying!!

The algorithm really doesn’t work when you are critical or sceptical over a subject. For instance crypto sceptics from r/buttcoin being shown binance ads. Yes, they do show an interest in crypto, but may be the least suceptible persons to that ad.

lckdscl , to gaming in what are your favorite pixel games and why?
@lckdscl@whiskers.bim.boats avatar

Pixelated graphics hit the right spot for me. The Binding of Isaac Rebirth, Stardew Valley, Enter the Gungeon, Dwarf Fortress, Dead Cells, Terraria, FTL, some emulated games. I got pretty addicted to Vampire Survivors at one point too.

Since I’m moving very soon I’m also redoing everything, so this more of a “soon-to-be” than a current, but I will have:

3x ryzen 5600 w/ 32gb of ECC ram, 10gb network and some enterprise disks 1x mikrotik switch 1x mikrotik router

And I will host, using Kubernetes (Talos OS):

  • ceph
  • owncloud infinite scale
  • Immich
  • Jellyfin
  • Homeassistant
  • Hashicorp vault
  • Oneuptime
  • gitea
  • plane
  • actual (finance software)
  • probably forgetting some stuff
capacitor ,

How do you find actual? I couldn’t really get to grips with it. Although it certainly seemed sleeker than Firefly III.

DigDoug , to linux in What distro(s) do you use?

Arch.

I’ve done a reasonable amount of distrohopping, but I always come crawling back because I’ve never found anything that can compete with the AUR.

BendyLemmy ,
@BendyLemmy@lemmy.ml avatar

Haha yes, I have to stay out of arguments involving Snap vs Flatpak for this reason. I ended up leaving Mint through issues with my HTPC install - with Plex, the ‘Home Theater’ app died it’s death, and options were tough to install - so I went for Arch, failed to get that working well, then tested KDE with Manjaro - bingo!

Until a couple of months ago, I was installing PlexHTPC via AUR which unpacked the snap and installed it - that’s so awesome… though now it’s dead so I had to jump onto the newly opened Flatpak option (AUR stuck at 1.30.1-1 whilst Flathub is up to 1.39.2).

After the PPA nightmares I had with 'buntu, and later with Mint (PPA’s made for 'buntu often don’t work) it’s like a dream.

Bulletdust ,

I haven’t experienced an issue adding PPA’s in about four years. The package manager simply does what it’s meant to do and things just work.

A bunch (47 containers at present)… Won’t list them here as its kind of redundant with what a lot of other people are running. My latest is Lemmy (lemmy.nine-hells.net).

r4tzt4r , to asklemmy in for the Reddit refugees, do you also feel a bit heartbroken?

A little bit. What I hate is losing the communities related to my hobbies. Reddit is/was very very helpful for me. Finding new music, finding new games, discussing movies and TV, learning about weird movies or cult shows, sharing my stuff to people that find it cool… It was 11 years of that. I needed that site, so many very helpful posts. I hope whatever comes next is better. For now I’m here, waiting to see what happens.

I can’t see all the comments, so this may have been mentioned, but make sure you have a good spot that gets bright sun most of the day. I don’t even bother with herbs indoors because my kitchen faces East and I don’t have a bright enough spot. If you notice your plants starting to look a little “leggy” (sending out long shoots with lots of distance between the leaves) that’s a good sign they are not getting enough light.
