I use a Pixel 5 with MicroG Lineage OS. I like it quite a bit: it’s fast, has good battery life, and thanks to Lineage OS, it doesn’t spy on me (as much). I do miss having an SD card slot and headphone jack, but those are hard to find anywhere these days, unfortunately.
I don’t have a specific upgrade schedule: I upgrade phones when the need arises. My last phone (Nexus 6) was showing its age: it was slow, the battery struggled to hold a charge, and the USB port was worn out. Switching to Lineage OS and a wireless charger helped with these problems somewhat, but it was still time for an upgrade. My phone before that (Droid Razr M) was stuck in a boot loop, so had to upgrade that, as well.
I have an iPad 3 sitting around somewhere, but otherwise, not much of an Apple person. I try to use Linux whenever possible (I know Android isn’t a traditional GNU/Linux system, but with Lineage OS and Termux, it’s close enough for me).
I also feel like lots of people uploading images directly to an instance’s servers put a lot more strain on them - especially at a time where most servers are experiencing serious growing pains and may not really have the funds to keep expanding their storage. They’re not ad supported like places like Reddit are.
I think it would be courteous of us to try and spread it out a bit and use services specifically intended for and set up for image hosting.
A lot of it is because of safety. It’s harder to slip underneath the water level if the tub is just about the length of your legs, this is especially important when your bath is particularly relaxing
Former Redditor. For those that are partaking in the Reddit walkout, with no plans on returning, is there additional information available for the datahoarding effort? The amount of information stuck in Reddit is overwhelming and we need to free that information for ingestion elsewhere.
I actually was searching for a solution to an issue today and the solution was on Reddit, which was set to private. I would love to help ensure this information is made available elsewhere.

I liked it briefly when I logged in but as someone on reddit pointed out, the owner encouraged others to astroturf bringing new users to the site which feels kinda icky given the way other users have also bashed lemmy alongside it.
Oh, God yes. And I do it on audiobooks no less. I was reading something a few months ago. “And she still had no idea who the spy was that one of her friends had been killed and replaced with master impersonator”. Wait… WTF? The chapter just started out that way. Well crap, chapter rewind. No I heard how that one starts out, tractor rewind again… No I heard that one too. I moved back through four chapters…nothing. I went and found the ePub downloaded it and text searched it. It happened like seven chapters ago in the middle of a chapter and I missed maybe 15 pages of content.
It also happens when I’m commuting now and then if I’m listening. I’ll realize that I’m not paying good attention and tap 30-second rewind half a dozen times. Listen to it all again and realize that I totally missed everything they said again even though I’m not doing anything else but driving. I just put some music on and go the hell home.
I’ve actually found audiobooks super helpful in clearing out my backlog, but there are certainly times where i feel like i accidentally started listening to a completely different book
My needs are small but Syncthing is for standard file sync and DokuWiki is for a repository for my family. It’s been surprisingly useful to be able to spin and delete up a syncthing folder for some specific thing.
Plex is for my ripped DVDs and also a great way to consume my photos archive without keeping a copy locally on my phone.
You are right. On the one hand, it’s kind of bad, naive distributed architecture (my day job), it could have been done much better. On the other hand, the more important point is that it demonstrates an alternative to centralized. We’ll learn a lot about usage patterns here, get new ideas, and either improve Lemmy or build something better from the ground up. Big thanks to Reddit for driving users this way to test scalability and get much better knowledge of usage.
Disclaimer: I’ve only looked a bit at the protocols and high levels descriptions of how it works, and this is just my understanding of it. But it seems to track.
let’s take … [email protected] for example. Right now lemmy.world is the Source of Truth on this, which means if you sign up for it on a different host, let’s say myawersomeinstance.com, that first contacts lemmy.world, copies over posts, and then subscribes on new posts for that. Actually not 100% sure if lemmy.world contacts myawersomeinstance.com when there’s a new post, or myawersomeinstance.com polls lemmy.world… But anyway, point is, lemmy.world is authority on it. myawersomeinstance.com also have [email protected] data, but it’s a copy of it. And lemmy.world is only authority. So if you post something, your server then sends it to lemmy.world and waits a reply. Then lemmy.world contacts all instances that has at least one user following this to tell about the new post. And that new post now exists on a few hundred databases.
The problem is the scaling is whack. Okay, you can have 5000 federated servers with users subscribing to [email protected], but that means lemmy.world needs to update 5000 servers per post, and there’ll be 5000x storage used for that post, and ALL 5000 servers contacts lemmy.world to get the new good stuff.
Frankly, it’s a scaling nightmare. As for a different approach, you could have private / public keys and sign updates from lemmy.world and allow the other instances to fetch the new data from each other. That would also allow more relaxed caching, since it would be generally lower cost to re-fetch the data. Now you need aggressive caching because you don’t want lemmy.world to keel over and die form every server on the planet wanting to hear the latest and greatest posts all the time.
What makes a distributed system good that Lemmy hasn’t done? Seems like a pretty robust system to me, seems like scaling issues are on the instance host themself. With Reddit’s experience, I don’t see how there are issues
It’s not distributed architecture as you normally think it - it’s a decentralised federation. It’s an important distinction from your typical distributed architecture app.
A distributed architecture generally refers to a single application or service designed to be resilient to individual data center failures. For example, Reddit, a centralized application controlled by Reddit itself, operates data centers around the world to process user transactions. In the event of an outage in a specific location, such as California, Reddit would still be able to function because its infrastructure for handling user requests and serving data would automatically switch to other functioning data centers elsewhere, like Nevada, Arizona, or Washington. This is an example of a distributed architecture.
On the other hand, a decentralized federation does not consist of a single application. Instead, it involves a software platform like Lemmy, which is hosted on multiple individual hosts. When a user signs up with one host, they can interact with users from other hosts, but each host manages its own infrastructure. For instance, someone could host a Lemmy instance on an old laptop they found in their closet and name it ballsuckers.com, while another person could host a Lemmy instance in the cloud with a properly designed distributed architecture and name it bingbong.com. Each host is responsible for managing its own instance. Users from both instances can interact with each other, but if, for example, the hard drive of ballsuckers.com were to fail, the entire ballsuckers.com instance would go down. However, this would not affect bingbong.com because its infrastructure is separate and managed independently.

I have been playing a lot of BotW and DRG on it. Playing BotW on it is amazing, for DRG or mainly any shooter on it there is the problem of me not being used to aim with the gyro properly yet.
I’ll always have a soft spot for Minecraft and it’s open world base building goodness.
If you want “Minecraft, but more grown up,” I can’t recommend Vintage Story enough. It’s actually an offshoot of a survival modpack for Minecraft if I recall correctly. A more involved crafting system (i.e. knapping tool heads out of stone, casting and forging metal tools, etc) and a threatening winter make for a very fun survival game. Still in active development with a pretty good pace of new content regularly, and a lively mod scene.
I’m using a Ramnode VPS since I had some unused credit I wanted to use up. 2 vcpu, 1 GB ram, and 35 GB ssd.
Seems to be working well enough so far, but right now it’s just me. If I open up to more users, I might need to upgrade, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.
Edit: I may have spoke too soon; had to reboot the server due to low memory. Hopefully a swap file will alleviate that a bit, but I might have to upgrade the RAM on this server. We’ll see.
