This is great, I subbed. I am trying to setup a server dedicated to motorcycling (r/motorcycles etc). Really like that we can setup specialty sites. Usenet 2.0

Late response I am chatting with you via my own instance. moto.teamswollen.org

The "Federation of servers" is a great way to handle this. I am surprised how will it works even in it infancy.

Long live the Federation.

My home Lemmy doesn’t seem to be able to find communities on kbin, when I search for something like !tech it just never resolves. :-/

Try pasting the browser url as it is in kbin, instead of using the Lemmy syntax. I know it’s goofy but it works.

dudeami0 ,

Neither seems to work for me, maybe federation is overloaded with the sudden influx? I’ll report back if it ends up working.

haelusnovak , to asklemmy in People of Lemmy, what is the scariest paranormal experience you've had you can't explain at all?
@haelusnovak@lemmy.world avatar

The Hatman. Weird phenomenon, cannot explain it outside of generic “pareidolia” approach, but definitely remember it to this day. That said, I never saw him when asleep like many/most. I was usually awake.

coffeeandbones OP ,
@coffeeandbones@lemmy.ml avatar

Yup I have heard of it, still I do believe it is related to the shadow people phenomenon and not just one entity, I have seen shadow people as I described above, and non have had a hat. Also, can you describe some of these experiences? Sound very interesting o.o

haelusnovak ,
@haelusnovak@lemmy.world avatar

Sure thing. I was quite young, but I think it was multiple occurrences, none of them scary so I thought not too much of it.

I was often in our kitchen from which extended a hallway, my room was on the hallway left. It was a very small house, so every room was off the hallway lol. I often would be sitting at the table eating, at the end of the table. I would have my back-left side to the hallway, and my mother would always complain about unnecessary lights being on, so the hallway lights would be off although the kitchen lights on, and brought enough to light half the hallway. See the attached image. I’m making a better version now, but this shittier version will help with the layout for now. Lol.

Anyway, I would see this Dick Tracy type man watching me as I would eat or whatever, just inside the hallway and out of view of the others. I distinctly remember thinking, “Oh, he looks a bit of Dick Tracy.” Which was strange, as I never saw a movie about him. Just felt like the right words. Now, I can say–Same coat. Same hat. Always just a shadow person. NEVER the evil red or white eyes reported by some others. No eyes whatsoever. Never aggressive. Never intimidating. Just… unsettling and cold to realize one is watching you… I do believe it to be the same entity multiple times. I was never sleep-- (although as a funny side story, I once left some laundry in a pile in my bed when I was young and lazy, and when I woke up and looked at it, I thought it was Abraham Lincoln shaped in my sleepy state and got scared haha).

This Hatman would occasionally watch me until I aged. Fast forward to just this year, and someone I know on Mastodon posted about it. I watched a video, was shocked. I thought it was something my child brain had imagined. I’m not sure I even believe in ghosties. I’m agnostic. I couldn’t even have an imaginary friend because it made me feel silly like I was obviously making it up and trying to fool myself (later this has been my experience with org. religion as well).

As I mentioned, hard to say it’s not a weird… Shared pareidolic experience due to the nature of the human brain. Or maybe he’s a System Admin making sure my code isn’t buggy in the simulation we live in (why not?). But it fills me with wild curiosity that I’ve experienced such a weird phenomenon. I’ve never “seen a ghost” otherwise.

Regardless of the cause… It’s fun to tell my new parent friends to ask their children if they’ve seen a hat man…

mogabi , to selfhosted in Is anyone interested in helping me create a Lemmy server focused on sports?

Fanaticus.social is here already but there’s definitely plenty of fragmentation overall. There’s probably more than I realize because I’m still figuring this place out.

kresten ,

It looks like it’s just clubs and baseball. What about some subs for general sport. Like /c/badminton

mogabi ,

It’s still being fleshed out and growing each day. I’d definitely support a general sport community there as well.

kresten ,

Like wrestling? :P

headie_sage ,

Come on over! Everyone’s free to start their own community!

kresten ,

Can I create a community without being on the instance?

headie_sage ,

Oh. Good question. I don’t think so. Which one would you like me to create? Wrestling? Can I make you a mod?

Aliendelarge , to futurama in Do you think younger generations will enjoy Futurama (both new/upcoming episodes and older content)?

Hard to say how that will work out with streaming nowadays. I grew up as an older millenial with things like MAS*H reruns and other shows that ended before I was born. With only a couple of channels on broadcast TV, I only had so many choices. I imagine availability on popular streaming services will have the potential of similar effects, but somewhat less.

Xirup , to piracy in Linux game torrenting
@Xirup@lemmy.one avatar

As a Linux user who lost at least 100 hours of his life wasting time trying to install a thousand different repacks, I suggest you to stay as far away as possible from any windows repack such as Dodi or FitGirl, usually they open but half way through the installation for x or y reason the installation stops and gets corrupted, you can try a thousand times with a thousand different commands and variables and nothing changes.

I suggest you to use “pre-installed” formats, Steamrip is my top 1 page to go to when I want a pirate game on Linux using Wine, and this is because the game already comes pre-installed, you just have to unzip the file and you have it ready to play.

Then, other highly recommended sites are Elamigos and GoG-Games, and if you really want to download repacks you have Torrrminator which personally I have never used.

Someone should create a community about Linux piracy like r/linuxcracksupport, I would do it but I don’t know if I have the time and patience to be the mod of a community.

lukas ,
@lukas@lemmy.haigner.me avatar

FitGirl installers tend to work if you limit the memory using the checkbox in the installer.

How much does a Lemmy instance cost to host?

Admin OP ,
@Admin@startrek.website avatar

That depends! You can run an instance on an old PC for just yourself and some friends for next to nothing, but a bigger instance with lots of traffic can easily climb to hundreds per month or more. No idea where we'll end up when things slow down, but the subreddits this server represent currently have more users than the entire Lemmy-verse 😅

Interesting ,

I’m just trying to get a rough idea of the order of magnitude. Has this instance exceeded “old PC” (For discussion’s sake, an 8 core i7-9700k with 32 gigabytes of RAM) yet?

Admin OP ,
@Admin@startrek.website avatar

Your definition of “old pc” is much nicer than mine. No we’re not there yet! But likely within the next few months. Lemmy.world recently made this post which you may find educational.

hello. can confirm. I'm on kbin.social right now and seeing this thread. I'm not sure federating is entirely up just yet but it's working a lot better/faster than it was these past few days. Definitely seeing an influx of beehaw and lemmy world users and posts :)

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot ,

Unfortunately, beehaw has decided that they don’t like this whole “federation” thing. Hopefully we’ll see replacements for their communities in the coming days.

Ah, I’ve misinterpreted, I first saw this post on kbin, but it’s a Lemmy post, so of course I can see it on Lemmy.

In that case I dunno. Will kbin posts be viewable on Lemmy, since the reverse is now possible?

Update: I seem to have found a way to view AskKbin on Lemmy/Jerboa, though only a few posts are actually showing up. Is this even intended behavior?

Zerlyna ,
@Zerlyna@lemmy.world avatar

I like this idea and the Mastedon app seems much faster to post… that’s really my only wish list item from lemmy right now. I’m figuring that’s a temporary imbalance of increase activity and server bandwidth/speed? I understand we are decentralized but so is Mastodon and at least my instance is very smooth and fast.

AshDene ,
@AshDene@kbin.social avatar

I can't speak to Lemmy's implementation (I refuse to go near lemmy on account of the maintainers "politics"), but there's nothing fundamental about threading that should make posting slower.

Loading threads here is... different... work than loading your feed in mastodon, it's possibly slower, but posting is from a theoretical standpoint the same. Probably you're just seeing the effect of your lemmy instance not running on sufficient hardware (very understandable given the explosion in user space size).

mr_jp ,

Can you elaborate on the ‘politics’?

I sense something weird , especially with the hardcoded ‘hate speech’ filter, which seems to run contrary to federation.

Anything else I should know about ?

AshDene ,
@AshDene@kbin.social avatar

The broad strokes are here: https://mstdn.social/@feditips/106835057054633379

In addition to the more important issues that fedi-tips discusses I find their stance on anti-vax and US-election conspiracy theories... unappealing, which you can see being discussed here: https://lemmy.ml/post/143057

And that they haven't been shy about exerting their power for political purposes. The hardcoded slur-filter was explicitly about discouraging "right wingers" (I put that in quotes because I suspect their definition of right wing and mine differ), and they at least use to be open about their intentions to moderate the instances that they run as explicitly "left wing" (though I don't see a reference to that on the current site).

agreyworld , to ukcasual in TV Tuesday?

God, I wish there were more “X of the week” type shows. I know breaking bad and a bunch of really great shows came out and made the golden age of serial story heavy TV happen - but man, I’m exhausted having to watch 20 hours of something to get any kind of plot resolution.

I mess the days where you could just watch 40 minutes of a show and have a whole story start to finish. So much less exhausting not having to get super invested. I don’t have the energy for serial TV shows these days!

rubikfrog OP ,
@rubikfrog@feddit.uk avatar

I blame CSI and Law and Order. I think they oversaturated us with “of the week” procedurals drama so collectively we all jumped ship to these shorter, high concept shows.
