BuckShot686 , to nostupidquestions in Why are vitamins named the way they are? (A, B, C, D, E and so on)
@BuckShot686@beehaw.org avatar

They were labeled alphabetically based on when they were discovered. Also, Vitamin D’s label was a misnomer as it’s converted into a vital hormone needed for the body to properly function.

I’m actually in awe of how well they handled this choice because each one of them has fantastic ironclad reasons why. I chose Lotus because I viewed her as wanting to “reclaim” that role for herself. She isn’t Margulis, she isn’t Natah anymore, she is the Lotus who protects and stabilizes the Origin system.

melmi ,
@melmi@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

This was my thought process exactly. That’s her role, and she’s reclaiming it now. It helps that the appearance that she chose immediately after killing Ballas was her new Radiant Lotus skin, giving the perfect embodiment of her new, reclaimed identity.

sphere_au , to selfhosted in Do you use all your self hosted services? Are there any you found to be not worth it after installing?

I tried putting up SearX and NextCloud, without really having used any equivalent cloud services in the past… but eventually both came unstuck, because:

  • SearX ended up getting blocked by basically every search engine, even though it was a private instance and only I was using it. And even while it worked, the results were not much better than using some other engine like Brave Search or even Startpage. Also, being the only user on that IP, meant that I was still able to be tracked by Google and filter bubbles started being an issue.
  • NextCloud - just wasn’t a need for it. I initially used the RSS reader and email and a few other things, but I already have a good desktop email client and RSS reader and preferred to use them, and other services I just wasn’t that interested in. No point putting in the effort maintaining it if I’m not using it.

These were personal instances though. Maybe might have been more successful if I’d had a userbase to serve, who actually were interested in having things web-based and were not so concerned about the inevitable loss in performance compared to desktop apps.

hal , to startrek in Strange New Worlds Season 2 early review round up
@hal@sopuli.xyz avatar

I don’t get reviews for movies/show. Makes no sense to me. If I’ve not watched the movie/show, I don’t wanna get spoiled and/or influenced by some random stranger who thinks the movie is either bad or good.

I want to see the movie/show on my own and then decide if its good or not. And after that, why do I need to read reviews? I already saw the movie/show and I know if I liked it or not. No reason to read a review of it.

For me it feels more like, many people need others to tell them if they should like a movie/show or not.

I totally get video game reviews because they are expensive and usually a much higher time investment compared to a movie or “tv” show.

@CorrodedCranium@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

I prefer physical books for the most part but I have a hard time justifying their cost when I own an ereader.

I like listening to audiobooks when I’m out and about but I find I’ll occasionally miss the odd sentence when I get distracted or forget to pause when I take my headphones off which leads to me skipping around trying to find where I was at.

Dan_Rachevaski , to technology in Megathread for Reddit Blackouts and News - Day 2

This is just my personal opinion. The 2 day blackout for me, never meant for people to pack their bags and leave Reddit entirely. It's not a very easy task to do, and honestly, there is still lots of contents and friends back in reddit. Reddit can be sure that lots of people will simply come back, and spez will grinning while working his way to his beloved IPO.

However, the 2 day blackout has opened a new world of alternatives to Reddit. Now people know other places and other communities that can replace Reddit as a whole. Yes, Reddit will still be an influential website. Yes, Reddit will still be money driven. Yes, spez will not budge. But we can.

To me, Reddit will not crash, burn and crushed to ash. But rather, it's either went the FB way, relying to lots of ads and ~~older demographics ~~ low-literacy to sustain, or simply becoming Myspace or Digg, a distant memory that's only in name.

Just my 1/2 cents.

Edit: changed some inacurrate words

relying to lots of ads and older demographics low-literacy masses to sustain

FIFY

Among the "older demographics" there are the most "nerdy" people, those born when personal computers and the internet didn't exist, those growing up together with technology, used to a world when corporations didn't destroy the good of sharing knowledge.

Those are the people most likely to rebel to what reddit is doing and find their way out if it, because they know it's possible, because they've seen it before.

Youngest people are used to how the world is nowadays because it's all they've seen, but they can be shown the difference if they're willing to listen.

Low-literacy masses are those who don't listen because they don't care, people of that sort exist in every age "range" and are unfortunately the majority of content "consumers", that's why Facebook(/Instagram/WhatsApp) doesn't die, and Reddit won't either most probably.

gapbetweenus ,

Reddit relies on user generated content, so it if the few users who actually generate entertaining stuff take their business elsewhere it will go the way of Myspace and DIgg. Because there is already a Facebook for old people.
