Ghost is self-hostable, easy-to-use, and looks beautiful. (Good) themes are usually a one-time payment, and they definitely have photoblog ones.

I use both Ghost and Wordpress for my sites and, while it’s not as infinitely customizable as Wordpress, Ghost is also not as needlessly complex, vulnerable, or time-intensive.

I’ll check it out thanks 🙏

FuryFaceofDoom , to linux in X11 vs Wayland

Little late to the party, but I’ll chime in. I have a 3080, and for the most part, Wayland works, but there are a few problems that keep me from using it as a daily driver. G-Sync doesn’t work at all, and when I put my PC to sleep, upon wake I end up needing to do a full reboot because of severe graphical issues. When it is running though, it’s pretty smooth, with only a few graphical issues here and there. I still daily drive X11 though until the major bugs are fixed.

TemperateFox , to selfhosted in is it better to use subdomains or paths?

Everyone is saying subdomains so I’ll try to give a reason for paths. Using subdomains makes local access a bit harder. With paths you can use 192etc/example, but if you use subdomains, how do you connect internally with https? example.192etc won’t work as you can’t mix an ip address with domain resolution. You’ll have to use 192etc:port. So no httpS for internal access. I got around this by hosting adguard as a local DNS and added an override so that my domain resolved to the local IP. But this won’t work if you’re connected to a VPN as it’ll capture your DNS requests, if you use paths you could exclude the IP from the VPN.

Edit: not sure what you mean by “more setup”, you should be using a reverse proxy either way.

If your router has NAT reflection, then the problem you describe is non existent. I use the same domain/protocol both inside and outside my network.

Same. I really loved the first two Diablos, but I wouldn’t touch the new one because of it. I’ll just wait a decade or so and emulate it.

addie , to youshouldknow in YSK it's either "should have" or "should've". "Should of" is incorrect
@addie@feddit.uk avatar

Not wanting to be purposefully controversial, but language is a tool for communication and as long as it’s understood by the target audience, then I’d say it was used effectively.

The English language doesn’t have a governing body (unlike say French and Spanish) and so whatever we agree on is correct usage. “Grammatically incorrect” has long been a dog-whistle signifier for elitism (you don’t have the expensive education to know what’s correct) and racism (the local dialect that you speak isn’t our ‘prestige’ version, therefore you are inferior) and I don’t really like to see it. Even when those aren’t your intentions when correcting people, it still rankles with me.

Not that I’d write ‘should of’ on my CV or anything, but it doesn’t offend me any on an internet forum.

ronaldtemp1 OP ,

Thanks for the info about French and Spanish governing bodies. TIL

Confuzzeled ,

What I’m hearing is we need to set up some kind of formal governing body to properly enforce the grammar rules of English. Maybe Hugo boss could make some uniforms.

Exitlude ,

It doesn’t necessarily have to invoke that kind of imagery. Spanish has the Royal Spanish Academy and within my lifetime they have removed a couple of letters from the alphabet (ch, ll).

Ah I was just being glib to try and be humorous. Alas my “sense of humour” rarely gets the response looked for. I will keep working on it.

Duy’ou-ndarstend Diz?

Understanding written text is more difficult when the existing established conventions that impart meaning are ignored.

Sure, those conventions evolve over time, some errors are worse than others, and no one’s going to write perfectly all the time. But that doesn’t mean anything goes and the writer has no responsibility to write clearly and correctly.

xx3rawr ,

True. Just because “language is descriptive” (descriptivist will always let you know) doesn’t mean everyone can go freestyle with language, carelessly introducing ambiguity and miscommunication. They always say “as long as it gets the point across” but as a non-native but still pretty fluent, most of the time they don’t actually get the point across.

  • jellyfin

Edit: forgot jellyfin

Most of the time it’s called “Vaultwarden” and since Bitwarden is OpenSource, it’s basically the same. Except that selfe hosted you do not have access to the haveibeenpawned API for your yearly subscription. Which is why my personal Vaulwarden is “only” a backup.

ron3ats ,

Hm if that’s what it’s for I may just stick to my subscription. Usually I go a self hosted route when I don’t want to pay for things, but in this instance I feel it may be worth it.

hfdh , to linux in Long time Linux user feeling burnt out

It depends on why you are using FOSS now?

For me its a principle choice of freedom and privacy since 1998, so I cope with the downsites on the desktop as much I can.

squarewagon OP ,

That is exactly why I choose to use FOSS including Linux. As much as I want to standby this principle, I have come to a breaking point after dealing with its issues, issues we have all experienced. I believe it is hands down the best choice for server use, but for work and productivity, I need something more matured that is going to work out of the box. I am glad that the community here took this criticism well but I think it’s important to discuss and understand that there are still some strides to be made. But at the end of the day, I’m just some guy ranting and who knows, maybe I’ll be installing a Linux distro after a month of using Mac OS.

hfdh ,

This summer I use Linux on my desktop for 25 years. What do you think the first years looked like? My first laptop took me 3 weeks to get it properly installed with Suse back in 1998. For the last 10 years installing and configuring whatever distro is a piece of cake. Ofcourse soms things are not as you want them to be: the good thing is you can change everything in FOSS, and if it does not excist you can create it. People complaining at Linux Desktop are realy complaining on their own limitations. Don’t complain! Not about yourself. Not about the Linux Desktop. Never ever give up! Make your list of whats not working for you. And than work and change until your list is history. Keep your head up strong. You’ll never walk alone!

Test comment, curious to see whether I can commwnt on lemmy world

inatux , to selfhosted in What are YOU self-hosting?

I have DietPi running on an RPi 4 with 4GB RAM.

Everything here is hosted in docker containers:

  • Portainer (docker management)
  • Nginx Proxy Manager (for reverse proxy)
  • Nextcloud (file storage + calendar)
  • Kanboard (task management + kanban board)
  • Homepage
  • Transmission (behind VPN with Flood web frontend)
  • Jellyfin media server
  • A Discord bot for my server
  • Watchman, my RSS feed to Kindle setup (github.com/andrwcnln/watchman)

I’ve probably forgotten some things but that’s the main bulk of it. Can’t recommend DietPi enough if you are looking for a super lightweight OS for you Pi server, has been perfect for me so far. Here are some things I am looking to host in the future too:

  • ntfy (for push notifications)
  • Apache server for my websites
  • Pi-hole
  • Plausible (a replacement for Google analytics for websites)
  • Vaultwarden
quasimagia ,

I have DietPi running on a RPi2, so it’s quite slow, but i run on it (without docker containers, bad choice)

-Pi-hole

-Vaultwarden

-Transmission

-Synchthing

I tried also Nextcloud but it’s a bit too slow in RPi2

inatux ,

I’d really recommend docker/podman etc. if you are going to host more, especially with portainer. makes things a lot easier to manage when you have lots of services hosted.

then again I’m not sure you could get much more running on an RPi 2. how does it hold up in general with the stuff you have so far?

DarkUFO , to selfhosted in Are there any gotchyas to running a Lemmy Instance?
@DarkUFO@lemmy.world avatar

If you gave up running a single user instance of Mastodon then I really don’t think you should be running a Lemmy instance. It’s a fediverse compliant system that will have many of the same issues as Mastodon.

I run a small 10 person Instance of Mastodon and it runs very well on a small server of 4GB Memory and 100GB disk. Not sure why you had issues with a 1 man instance.

Out of interest why would you want to run a 1 man Lemmy Instance?

zombie_kong OP ,

I’m not alone.

github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/20255

Compute was never an issue. I had my instance hosted on Hetzner and it ran just fine.

My concern is the storage, as described above, constantly checking disk space, cronjobs, purging etc etc

And whether I host a single user or a multi user instance is neither here or there. My question still stands.

DarkUFO ,
@DarkUFO@lemmy.world avatar

I never had to check disk space, cron jobs or do any purging.

Where did you run you Mastodon Instance. I run mine at Digitial Ocean, been running for nearly a year and have not encountered any issues and I’m running on the cheapest server they have.

SomethingBurger , to selfhosted in Gandi announced a price increase and discontinuation of free mailboxes
@SomethingBurger@beehaw.org avatar

I think I will stop using Gandi. They are too expensive and don’t provide much value compared to other registrars.

The price for the TLD of my custom domain doubled. With the new prices, it’s cheaper for me to get the domain at OVH (cheaper than Gandi’s previous price) and mailboxes at mailbox.org, than the domain alone at Gandi.

g5pw OP ,

Yeah, I was registering my domains there because they are in Europe and had some extra services, I’ll be taking my business elsewhere now

lemmyvore ,

They’re not even trying to pretend they offer competitive domain prices anymore. Last time I renewed the prices for the 5 TLD’s I use varied $15-22, this year they’re all $30. That’s a 75-100% increase accross the board.
