lightrush , to linux in What are your thoughts on the upcoming COSMIC DE?
@lightrush@lemmy.ca avatar

Skeptical. Writing a graphical UI toolkit is a freight train of work. I’m positively curious about anything that’s not GTK but I’m not sure going with a new toolkit is the right decision. Qt is the mature kid on the block that’s been proven in more environments than I can count. Moreover it’s a complete application framework with a ton of convenience libraries needed for speedy development already included. I guess those can be supplanted in the form of separate Rust libs. Personally I’d have gone with Qt for such a project but I’d be happy to be proven wrong.

kartonrealista ,
@kartonrealista@lemmy.world avatar

This is coming from personal experience/opinion, but after trying to create a simple app in GTK4 Rust bindings I was so confused because of how alien the programming style was compared to typical Rust programming. After trying Iced it was much simpler and made so much more sense, no silly decorators or anything, you can define the view and the update loop separately, and interactions are handled by messages using pattern matching. The inheritance based OOP doesn’t work well with Rust, and Iced has none of it, because it was made for Rust specifically.

I’m guessing QT bindings are similarly in a different style of programming and can’t imagine that meshing well with native Rust code. Iced has a lot of merits to it and having the opportunity to both help it develop and use a native Rust framework in a Rust project makes a lot of sense.

Yeah in general, I like forums better than the format Twitter is in. I like topic-based discussions more than discussions spawned from short, potentially out-of-context messages.

sailsperson ,

Not to mention that the discussion is almost guaranteed to consist of similarly short (or even shorter) witty one-liners. Twitter format is just horrible, and its restrictions promote equally horrible behavior where you have to look for ways to convey ideas and feeling in a short manner, which almost never results in more polite and sophisticated conversations.

Never used Twitter for anything more serious than some announcements from the game devs I follow. Anything else is just plain stupid, which makes me really surprised over the wide-spread adoption of Twitter by officials and ministries and the like.

And raising the character limit is going to be even more absurd, because then it’s going to be reminiscent of an actual forum, just less structured and sensible.

Twitter, as a format, is the worst option between messengers like Matrix and proper forums of any kind.

Banana , to gaming in What are some of your LEAST favorite game mechanics?
@Banana@kbin.social avatar
  • Excessive grinding or padding in a game just for the sake of it or for microtransaction reasons.
  • Microtransaction and pay-to-win models in full price $70 games...
  • Overuse of Quick time events Press E to dodge etc etc
  • Escort missions when developers want to pad their game out
  • Terrible stealth mechanics when an enemey spots me when im standing still in a bush from the other side of the map
sverit ,

Yeah, the older I get, the more “I don’t have time for 10h grinding a day” I get. Just let me play a complete game in peace please.

smikwily ,

I decided a few years ago that I play games to have fun and if a game isn’t fun, I don’t play it. I don’t have much time these days to dedicate gaming, so I want to enjoy the time I do.

I’ve had a few I’ve really enjoyed until I hit some really terrible game mechanic or even a boss encounter I can’t get past. I’ll usually give it a few days/tries, but I’ll flat out just bail and uninstall a game if it is causing me too much stress.

Deestan , to gaming in What are some of your favorite game mechanics?

Creative allowance. Even if it makes the game “unbalanced”.

Just Cause 2 with the grappling hook you could attach one end to a statue and one to a truck.

Grand Theft Auto 3 was the first game where I realized I could complete an assassination by stealing a police car, use the swarm of police cars following me as a “net” to trap my target’s car so he couldn’t drive away, and then blowing up the pile of cars with a grenade.

Rimworld where I can create a settlement of nudist vampires trading beautiful wooden sculptures for slaves to feed on.

The Sims 3 of course.

From the Depths, Minecraft, Space Engineers, Valheim also to a large degree.

pcouy ,

The last two Zelda games (especially totk) lets the player get really creative as well

Deestan ,

Oooh yes. I have a switch, but didn’t pick up TotK yet. It looks amazing.

pcouy ,

While it’s very similar to botw, it fixes a few things and introduces a lot of new fun mechanics. If you enjoyed botw, there is no way you don’t have fun with totk.

I don't really know whats going on the whole instance thing confuses me. Whats it's pros? Why use it

Barbarian ,
@Barbarian@sh.itjust.works avatar

Basically 4 things:

  • Pick your own admin. I’m sure the kbin admin is awesome (can’t be worse than spez, lol) but it’s nice to have the option
  • Have more control over what your server federates with. Hate interacting with people from a specific server? Move to one that blocks it. Want to interact with people from a blocked instance? Move to one that doesn’t block them. Basically more options.
  • Don’t like the rules on your server? Go to one where you like the rules better.
  • Your server is down? That’s fine, go to a different one temporarily. You’re gonna feel this hard on Monday. Kbin’s gonna get crushed by the Reddit hug of death. You might wanna join up to a small Lemmy instance that the horde won’t notice if that happens and you still wanna be on.

If you like kbin’s admin, federation settings and rules? Then cool! You’re missing absolutely nothing from being there (except when it’s down). It’s nice to have options though.

Secret number 5:

If you know how to host a server, you can host your own Lemmy instance and have all the powa!

honorfaz ,
@honorfaz@kbin.social avatar

@Barbarian So I have a few questions, being new to all this:

  1. Seemingly I am responding to you when you're on a different instance. I'm on kbin and you're on... sh.itjust.works? Am I understanding this right?
  2. My kbin account is restricted to just kbin, correct? I cannot use my kbin credentials to log on to another instance like sh.itjust.works.
  3. How do I make an original comment (this is a bit dumb lol). I see the option to reply to others but no "comment" button for me to comment on my own.
  4. On kbin specifically... what is a microblog?
  5. (Last one promise), what is up with the @stuff. I see this post link is kbin.social/m/[email protected]... I figured the /m is like reddit's /r, but what is the [email protected] meaning that this is the magazine/community from lemmy.mt when shown on the kbin /m/ instance version? Not sure if this question makes any sense lol I'm just trying to understand how this all works
primalmotion ,
@primalmotion@lemmy.antisocial.ly avatar

Your username in the fediverse is not honorfaz, but @honorfaz, just as an email. It’s the same for communities (or sublemmy, or whatever we decide to call it). It’s not c/something, but c/[email protected]. This is why everyone still has a unique handle, but no unique admin.

I’m on my own instance for example, running in my living room, and yet here we are, talking. Internet as it was intented.

NuPNuA , to technology in what would Reddit need to do to get you to go back

Literally wouldn’t go anywhere if the app I like wasn’t having to shut down.

Their official app is horrible to use in comparison. Just joined up here and installed Jerboa and it’s like using the app I’m losing there.

Ill miss RIF, im curious if RIF had a different algorithm or something cause from what im reading there was a lot of awful going on with reddit and I saw nearly none of it.

NuPNuA ,

I mean, I didn’t see as much of the bad “Reddit” culture that people talk about either. But I had curated my feed to the point that I had little default subs left so perhaps I was “avoiding the crowds”, so to speak.

It definitely is hard to pick a particular favorite, they all have their moments in the show. If pressed though I would have to give it to Bender, the unpredictability just adds lots of fun to the show.
