I have my own Lemmy instance running on my home server, but I’m here. “But Bizzle,” you may be asking yourself, “why go through all the trouble of configuring your own instance just to wind up on Lemmy.World anyway?”
I’m glad you asked! And the answer is that federation only fetches parent comments. I’m glad Lemmy exists, and I’m going to keep using it, but we need federated sibling comments for this to actually be good, in my opinion.
I have a rented server with 8 Xeon E3-1246 and 64GB at Hetzner where I host:
Vaultwarden
Gitlab (git repo, container registry, static blog (pages with Hugo))
Drawio (Diagrams)
Kroki (for Gitlab)
Gitlab runner
FreshRSS
Nextcloud
Redis
Headscale (Tailscale server)
Keycloak
MariaDB
PostgreSQL
Plex
Privacybin
Wallabag
Hedgedoc
It’s all behind a Traefik instance handling Let’s Encrypt and using the Docker socket to route traffic based on labels in docker-compose.yml. Behind these I also run k3s and from time to time some VMs. I also have a 1TB storage pod at Hetzner where I use restic to back everything up from this instance as well as from my home system and laptops.
Current daily driver is a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. Pretty happy with its compact size when folded, and it serves as a mini-tablet of sorts when unfolded. It’s also the first phone I’ve owned that I’ve not needed to worry about running out of juice midway throughout the day. Though I find its quite hard to find a suitable table stand for it, especially if using it unfolded.
My Android journey began in January 2014 with a Sony Xperia Z1, upgraded from an iPhone 4S with a busted home button. It was a pretty great introduction to the Android world with Sony’s near-stock interface (when compared with the dark days of T**chwiz bloatware and whatnot) and lasted until January 2016 when I upgraded to a Sony Xperia Z5 Premium. The lack of an SD card slot of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 made me hold my nose and get the Z5P despite its Snapdragon 810 SoC, and I endured its abysmal 3.5 hour SOT until 20 months later I upgraded to a red Sony Xperia XZ Premium. This was a really good looking phone and its SD835 SoC was definitely a far cry from the 810 with 5.5 to 6 hours SOT. 28 months of use later and the XZP unfortunately started lagging, which prompted me to try out Samsung. The Note 10+ impressed me with its nearly bezelless screen and s-pen, but the Exynos 9825 SoC was pretty meh at battery life. So another 28 months later and I’ve upgraded to the SD 8+ Gen 1 Fold 4.
I have a used Lenovo Thinkcentre mini with an i3-7100T and 16gb RAM. I have Ubuntu server LTS installed on it and I run everything in docker containers.
I host:
jellyfin server for my friends and family
qbittorrent to download for the JF server(behind a VPN)
Obligatory “Good news everyone!”, “I am [title] ruler of [thing]” in Lrrrr’s voice, “bite my shiny metal ass”, “shut up and take my money”, and I’m sure I’ll notice more now that I’m thinking about it.
Yeah, however after it is searched it should work, the 404 problem might happen sometimes since all these communities are new and might not be connected with all instances yet
“Motif Window Manager”? I’m on mobile and have old eyes, but it looks like WindowMaker. If so, great choice! If not, I’ll have to look closer when I get home.
I have a MediaWiki instance on my laptop (I’ve found the features of all other wikis/mindmaps/knowledge databases decisively insufficient after having a taste of MW templates, Semantic MediaWiki and Scribunto).
Also some smaller things like pihole-standalone, Jellyfin and dictd.
I just hope that most of the people who migrated here to Lemmy will stay and not just go back to Reddit like nothing ever happened.
The huge activity in even small communities is what always kept me on Reddit, and I really look forward to see if Lemmy continues to grow to become what we all hoped Reddit would be for us.
I’ll be abondoning Reddit completely and deleting everything as soon as RiF stops working.
I’m probably going to end up back on Reddit to some extent, but I think Lemmy will stay in my rotation of stuff I open when I’m bored. Or until they inevitably kill old.reddit.com, then I’ll be outta there for good…
Idk if I’m just dumb or something but I have tried to play terraria on 5+ separate occasions and the controls and UI just DON’T make sense to me. Like how to craft?! How to equip? How to do stuff? It was just so confusing. I tried on mobile and steam deck. I even looked up the controls online and mapped it out. It just never clicked for me. I felt like an 80 year old using a smartphone for the first time.
