Nemo , to asklemmy in Is the purpose of Lemmy to bully out people who disagree in any way?

So, lemmy isn’t just one site. If you had a bad experience on one instance, by all means leave and go to another one.

ImpressiveEssay OP ,

Hm… I find it interesting to see people argue in favour of echo chambers.

In today’s world… that kinda baffling b

Hobbes_Dent ,

The above is saying that Lemmy is not monolithic and if you find one instance an echo chamber there are other instances that may be more to your liking.

Nemo ,

Thank you, yes. I can kinda see how OP took it wrong, but this is exactly what I meant. We don’t need to put up with echo chambers any more.

BassTurd ,

Being the only person on one side of a conversation doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in an echo chamber. It could also just mean that you’re wrong.

Open Shell for a Win7 style windows start menu with extra features like a (offline, your computer only) search, lots of customization

Nomacs for image viewing

Simplewall if you want to block programs/apps internet access one by one

WPD allows you to uninstall some of the UWP style permanent apps and turn off several spy-telemetry things.

Others that I’ve seen already mentioned and I personally would recommend as well: Notepad++, Sumatra PDF, 7zip

ILikeBoobies , to linux in Would being a Linux "power user" increase my chances of getting a job in IT/tech?

Depends on the job, a lot of places don’t use Linux

However Linux jobs tend to pay more than the non-Linux equivalent if you can find one

erwan ,

Most places deploy to Linux, and for those knowing Linux helps a lot. Also a lot of places will give MacBook pro, expect you to know the CLI so a lot of Linux knowledge will be useful there.

Azzu , to asklemmy in Is the purpose of Lemmy to bully out people who disagree in any way?

Btw, if you look at the thread in question where you were called out for being wrong, all the comments name-calling and bullying you were removed. Moderation doesn’t work instantly.

Phineaz , to asklemmy in Is the purpose of Lemmy to bully out people who disagree in any way?

Checking your comments you seem to have had a run-in with the ML-crowd. Lemmy generally has a plethora of “leftist” (if you restrict your political compass to one dimension) communities, although the variety is immense. Let’s just say there is some … unfriendly turf here on the Fediverse. Plenty of people on the German communities avoid .ml communities.

I consider it to be the price of diversity. Due to the lack of central moderation (except on authoritarianism-loving instances), communities are much more self-regulating. On better (aka not US-politics) communities people tend to simply disagree or discuss, but rarely go beyond that.

velox_vulnus ,

No? OP is getting their ass handed out by .world users, on a .world community.

Phineaz ,

Which is highly populated by .ml (such as you, which is not an inherently negative thing) and people that probably come from that line of thinking. Tbf I did not check what instance the people in question were on, so you are right for calling me out on simply assuming so. Regardless, OP was posting somewhat controversial statements and was met with a crowd that considers the statements “police officers are humans, too” to be controversial.

Even if it was .ml communities going after him, it’s for the best Jerries avoid us-- some of y’all’s worst and darkest, that should have seen the gallows at Nuremberg, gave us the Nazi Arming and Training Organization and we NOT GONNA LET Y’ALL VASSAL ASSES FORGET IT.

changing and expecting people to accept that change unconditionally.

diametrically disagreeing with your partner on some important issue of your relationship and only mentioning it way after things got serious.

bad hygiene (for olodumarè’s sake, bathe daily, and if possible brush your teeth at least twice a day).

as mentioned before, being a jerk towards service providers and elderly without reason, and towards kids in general.

Same. I use an MX Master all day every day and they last for years. No Linux support though. I might try a Corsair mouse next time

As a former teacher of younger kids, that feature probably makes them 10x less likely to be forgotten/lost. (The size is “youth 10-”) Agree it’s kinda gross, but kids are wired differently.

MeatPilot , to showerthoughts in With the prison sentences for activists who threw soup on "sunflowers", our society has affirmed that an illustration of nature is something we value.

I do agree something needs done about climate change. But as someone who deeply appreciates art and understands how important it is to preserve it, I think protesters have a lot more avenue’s to gain attention AND actually target something related to climate change.

Why not go throw soup on a representative or maybe throw soup on the door of a famous municipal building. Target government, they ultimately make the decisions.

Wizard_Pope ,
@Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world avatar

The issue is that does not get as much attention and publicity.

The problem with their approach however is that it makes everyone hate them.

daniskarma ,

I don’t think is a matter of publicity.

Every single human being on the planet knows what climate change is. Some people may not believe in it but they surely know what it is.

IMHO the solution comes from (real) education on the matter. We are past publicity, we need schooling on both causes, consequences and solutions to climate change.

Wizard_Pope ,
@Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world avatar

It is a matter of publicity for just stop oil. They main goal afaik is to bring attention to the issues the oil industry makes. The fastest way to do that is to get as much publicity as possible. They are doing it in a stupid way though.

daniskarma ,

I believe that particular “activist” group has been found to be related to oil companies (taking money from them). And there was assumptions that they were just trying to throw bad reputation into the movement.

Take it with a grain of salt because this is just something I remember reading some time ago and I don’t have any sources on it.
