Anyone else using Kagi.com for search? Iā€™m using it as a paid user and itā€™s fantastic, no ads and no tracking and results are great. I use ChatGPT for ā€œideasā€ and Kagi for specifics.

limeaide ,

How come you feel the need to pay for your search engine? What type of searches do you do?

0xc0ba17 ,

Less Google = better. The results are also better, and looking for stuff is a good part of my programming job.

ALoafOfBread , to lemmy in my thoughts on lemmy so far

Itā€™s really weird. Thereā€™s so few people here, but the conversations are really good. Everyone is friendly and the place is growing. Thatā€™s a really great vibe.

That is how it was at reddit during/before/relatively after the digg exodus.

Sadly i checked in on the Apollo sub and thereā€™s a lot of hate on there for Lemmy. Not sure if people fully understand it or they are just fighting the inevitable change that is coming lol. But it def. reminds me of the digg meltdown and how people were hellbent that reddit sucked and wouldnā€™t last and was too difficult to useā€¦ lol change is hard sometimes but itā€™s life.

klemptor ,

What are their complaints about lemmy?

wicked82 ,
@wicked82@midwest.social avatar

The complaints are all over the place so likely coming from people that either A.) havenā€™t actually used Lemmy. B.) Used it for .5 seconds got confused and gave up. C.) Are just afraid of change and just wanna stick their heads in the sandā€¦

But most of them center around how difficult lemmy is to use and how ā€œcommunities are way too overbearing with the rules.ā€ , that it uses the new.reddit UI, and that itā€™s run by a bunch of ā€œtankiesā€

raj ,

Whatā€™s a tankie? My biggest concern is the fragmentation of communities due to multiple servers, so the numbers in any one server will always be smaller.

ImOnADiet ,
@ImOnADiet@lemmygrad.ml avatar

theyā€™re complaining about us lemmygrad users, but we arenā€™t even the biggest instance anymore + the 2 recommended instances block us anyways so itā€™s a worthless complaint now

I have noticed that the quality of results on Google and DDG and others have been declining steadily over the last few years, and I think this is mostly a result of click farms generally getting better at gaming the system. Genuinely quality content is just being drowned out by crap.

ChatGPT doesnā€™t really address this. I also donā€™t see ChatGPT as a genuine replacement yet because 1) hallucination is still too big of a problem and 2) the value add of using natural language for queries doesnā€™t seem all that beneficial to me. Sorta like, how IF you are already used to a terminal, it will be faster or just as fast as a GUI for many things.

The only real value I have seen from ChatGPT, is for complex boilerplate generation that is very easy to verify. ChatGPT is fantastic for generating regex, for example. Or poems, if you prefer.

PeterPoopshit ,

Iā€™ve used ChatGPT for things like generating c linker scripts or writing a bochs configuration file. It would have taken me 30 minutes to research how to make a bochs config file but since I got ChatGPT to shit out something wrong but close to correct, I only had to fill in the incorrect stuff based on common sense and google a few things.

usernamesAreTricky ,

Natural language kind of stuff can be helpful if you donā€™t know the relvent terms for something though I havenā€™t had too much luck most of the time with ChatGPT on that kind of stuff. Worse is that ChatGPT is likely to lead to even more SEO spam :(

Lotro - great community, great designs on raid encounters in endgame, where you will die if not everyone plays their role, starting from tier 2. Tier 1 is always designed as a learning experience before moving to tier 2, which makes it great for casuals like myself to get into. Only issue I have is the bloat of leveling, where you now have to go endless hours untill reaching endgame, almost mostly without seeing other players, as those areas are now empty. Feels more like a mediocre Singleplayer game during that time. Otherwise I have started recently on tWoW, lots of people to quest with, which is great šŸ˜ƒ

I donā€™t use Google very often anymore, more of a DuckDuckGo fan. However using ChatGPT has become my goto for quick howto stuff. A lot of web searches will load clickbait articles or dead end forums. Using GPT I often get a strait forward guide built for exactly what I need.

sotimely ,
@sotimely@lemmygrad.ml avatar

itā€™s amazing how much the web is full of clickbait and fake sites trying to just capture search result traffic. ironically, ChatGPT seems to make it even easier to make sites like that. šŸ˜

I used to run OSMC and had Kodi and everything on there but honestly it was more trouble than it was worth. Kodi and itā€™s piracy addons are pretty buggy in most cases and fail to work reliably for very long. Since then Iā€™ve switched back to using Plex but soon I may have to switch again to Jellyfin.

Yeah, pretty much (GPT-4ā€™s a big upgrade over the default 3.5).

That said, OpenAssistant is already really impressive for a project with such limited resources. Would love to see open-source overtake OpenAI quickly (which IMO isnā€™t out of the question, considering how quickly Stable Diffusion developed)

Wander ,

@gzrrt @dl007

The biggest problem with GPT-4 is that it's severely restricted.

I believe that AI's next big change will be model optimization and open source models will be able to catch up.

As a creative: Blender. It was always a good program but thank god they finally started hiring people, that actually know how to design a usable UI. I remember the times when the devs refused to change the simple default selection to the worldwide standard: left mouse button.

Firefox is the first to come to mind. Also all the KDE software (when run in KDE).

Mersampa , to technology in Why is it so annoyingly hard to set up a Fediverse node?

80/20 rule.

When you are creating something like Lemmy, where you want wide uptake, you need to pander to the masses.

The /r/selfhosted surveys show around half of self-hosters mostly or exclusively use docker. A significant portion of the rest can use docker if needed.

If youā€™re in the 20% that isnā€™t covered by the most common setup, then it can be frustrating. But supporting that 20% takes as much effort as supporting the other 80% (see 80/20 rule), and when things are new itā€™s just not where the effort should be focused.

So you have all those servers, but why canā€™t you install debian or ubuntu server on one of them?

You could also get a $2/month VPS and run it on that. Beehaw is run on something similar (though apparently $12 a month, but a lot more users).
