I’ve commented more here than I did the past 9 years on Reddit. I also created Watch Party, where people can watch a movie together and discuss it in a live thread, similar to sporting events. Starship Troopers was the proof of concept, and it was a fun time. I’m hoping it’ll gain some more traction in the coming months and encourage anyone to check out the pinned “Getting Started” post if you’re interested in hosting a watch party as well.
Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using an URL instead of its name, which doesn’t work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: !watch_party
Absolutely! There are many bots designed to provide useful services and improve the functionality of online communities. Some bots can help moderate content, others can help handle community engagement, and some even provide educational content or useful information related to specific topics. However, they have no personal agenda or feelings as they operate based on the algorithms and instructions given in their programming. Hence, whether a bot is good or bad can often be subjective and based on the way they’re programmed and used in the community.
There are similar examples from other countries as well. TV was seen as a means for making live broadcasts, so back-ups weren’t made and tapes got recorded over. Source: a course on TV history I took.
When I was a vegetarian, Indian food was my go to. Guaranteed to be vegetarian and tasty. It would even be mostly vegan but they use ghee in almost everything, so it's a big no-no for vegans unfortunately
Vegetarianism is not enough. Cows are murdered at a few hours old if they have the misfortune of being male, or unwanted "stock" if they're female. Male chicks are killed at a few hours old because they'll never produce eggs. Vegetarians preach love for animals, but they're hypocrites. dairy and eggs are so cruel.
I agree. I was vegetarian for 3-4 years and realized that if I was doing it for the animals, I couldn't keep consuming eggs and dairy, or any other animal product for that matter. Been a vegan for more than 10 years now
Ye man I could infer that from your earlier comment :D
Just a tip: I agree with everything you say, but if our goal is to change peoples' behavior, it is detrimental to call the hypocrites (and similar adjectives). That creates cognitive dissonance, and people usually double-down on their old behavior when faced with cognitive dissonance instead of changing their behavior. What I've found works best to make people go vegan is instead of calling them out on their behavior, show them positive examples of veganism, and let them do the math.
Probably not that high. From experience, it’s just that you’ve been eating vegetarian food all your life, it’s really weird to eat non vegetarian. In fact, there are many of my friends who’ve turned non vegetarian due to peer pressure from their friends.
While attempting to bag the snake, Budden was bitten on his left thumb but was successful in placing the captured snake in a bag. Extracting a promise from the truck driver that he would get the snake to someone who would transport it south to researchers, Budden was taken for medical treatment. Not having any antivenom for taipans, Budden was given tiger snake antivenom. Although that helped counter the coagulating effect of taipan venom, it did not overcome the second effect of the taipan venom which paralyses the nervous system. Though doctors were initially hopeful he would recover, he died the following afternoon.
Well that was a fucked up read with my breakfast. Definitely some common threads with the I’m Glad My Mother Is Dead book if anybody is into hearing more about what it’s like to grow up in Hollywood.
From what I've read I get the impression that eliminating biting mosquitoes wouldn't have much impact - there are lots of types of mosquitoes and supposedly few are of the biting kind, and at the same time the ones that pollinate or are food for other animals are usually not a significant source of food or pollination, and the ones that do pollinate don't pollinate anything important to us according to a random article I read. So basically for it to matter you would need to be eliminating a kind that bites and makes up a majority of the pollination or food for something else which seems unlikely.
Just a side note, ActivityPub protocol - the core engine that lets all of fediverse to talk to the rest of the fediverse is… 5 years old. Every feature imaginable is still to be implemented.
Is/will there be a movie/TV equivalent of BookWyrm, something to track and discuss what you’ve been watching? A quick search tells me it’s been discussed and seems like something people want but it doesn’t look like it’s been done yet, at least not as a dedicated service. Is that right?
Years ago the owners of GoodReads announced that Amazon had taken away their access to the Amazon book database. It was an existential threat, they said, and asked the GoodReads community to volunteer to create a new book database to replace Amazon’s. Hundreds or thousands of us worked for free, donating thousands or tens of thousands of hours to the project.
And then GoodReads announced that they’d sold out to Amazon. Apparently they’d been in negotiations with those bastards the whole time they were lying to us about losing access to the database. Maybe proving that they could sucker their loyal users into donating free labor helped raise the selling price of GoodReads a little.
As for the database we created, I guess it’s Amazon’s now. Of course, if we create a movie database of our own, NOBODY will be able to buy it! And we can make it available for free use, if we want.
Understandable. But it’s the chicken and egg problem. Creators don’t want to create content, because there’s no consumers. Consumers don’t want to sign up, because there’s no creators.
So are you the chicken or the egg? :-D
If you’re on one you don’t like anymore you could always change instances and watch videos there. If you’re worried about losing comments, well you can comment from other Fediverse servers such as Mastodon or GoToSocial and they show up on the page for the video. :-)
You know what, Peertube needs the equivalent of an acquisition and the perfect candidates would be, and I’m on record saying this before, DailyMotion and Vimeo. They’ve already got content and by implementing activitiypub integration, they can grow their audiences and compete with YouTube for once and for all.
But yeah, for me. I haven’t even found a video to watch let alone comment. That said, my YouTube is generally me watching album reactions, music videos, Hot Ones, Adam Something and Beard Meats Food.
Nothing stopping Vimeo from plumbing in ActivityPun amd joining the Fediverse. It’s open and the only reason no one does is because the data is valuable and they don’t want to share and play nice.
These walled gardens were not how the internet was imagined.
