theyoyomaster , to news in Haiti: US guns pour into Port-au-Prince, fuelling surge in violence

The title picture for this article shows a fully automatic gun that is illegal in all forms for civilian ownership in the US and does not come in a semi-auto version that is civilian legal. It is also used by the Haitian police as well as the police and governments of several Central and South American countries. It almost certainly did not come from the US.

autotldr Bot , to world in US says UFO sightings likely secret military tests

This is the best summary I could come up with:

A spike in UFO sightings in the 1960s was likely caused by tests of advanced US spy planes and space technology, a Pentagon report has concluded.

The findings, submitted in a report to Congress on Friday, also said there was “no evidence” that the US government had interactions with aliens.

Most sightings of UFOs or “unidentified anomalous phenomena” (UAP) were ordinary objects, officials said.

“The proliferation of television programmes, books, movies, and the vast amount of internet and social media content centred on UAP-related topics most likely has influenced the public conversation on this topic, and reinforced these beliefs within some sections of the population,” the report said.

A Pentagon spokesperson said that officials had approached the report in an open-minded way, but had simply found no evidence of extra-terrestrial visitors.

“All investigative efforts, at all levels of classification, concluded that most sightings were ordinary objects and phenomena and the result of misidentification,” Maj Gen Pat Ryder told reporters.

autotldr Bot , to technology in BBC iPlayer to end programme downloads for PCs and Macs

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The BBC’s iPlayer streaming service is to end downloads for users who watch on desktop or laptop computers.

Currently viewers on PCs and Macs can save programmes via the iPlayer Downloads app, but that will be closed.

“This does not affect downloads on the BBC iPlayer mobile or tablet apps and viewers can continue to stream programmes on BBC iPlayer on their PCs and Macs,” a spokesperson added.

The corporation declined to reveal how many people would be affected by the closure of downloads for users of desktops and laptops, but the decision has attracted some criticism.

And former BBC Journalist Robert Rea wrote: "This strikes me as a very bad move.

Figures released last year show traditional TV viewing had its sharpest ever decline in 2022, according to the latest annual survey of UK media consumption by broadcasting watchdog Ofcom.

senseamidmadness , to news in Tucker Carlson: Putin takes charge as TV host gives free rein to Kremlin

The fact that we’re talking about this means that, as a publicity stunt, it worked. Tucker got a massive amount of media attention for this.

And in the social media algorithm, there’s no such thing as bad publicity; all that matters is engagement.

Personally I won’t be watching. Not even for the memes. If enough people ignored pundits like Tucker Carlson, they’d go away.
