Lol wut? Is there a law against drinking tea and driving? Is it different because he’s driving a truck? Are you not allowed to let go of the steering wheel for a second? Why did they say something to him?? Was his driving dangerous in any way? So many questions.

FatLegTed ,
@FatLegTed@feddit.uk avatar

Is there a law against drinking tea and driving?

Yes there is. If you’re a driver and didn’t know this, you need to hand your licence back.

mvirts ,

Hmmmm I don’t think there is, not in my state at least. It’s the drivers responsibility to decide what is reasonable when driving, if you lose control of your vehicle or break some other traffic law, doing something like drinking (non-alcoholic) tea or coffee could contribute to your charges but isn’t illegal by itself.

Idk if the sun is considered authoritative, but they come to a similar conclusion for the UK the-sun.com/…/is-it-illegal-to-eat-and-drink-whil…

FatLegTed ,
@FatLegTed@feddit.uk avatar

This is about UK - it most certainly is illegal to drink or eat things whilst driving. It’d be classed as not having full control of the vehicle.

mvirts ,

… so what is that sun article talking about? I could be wrong. I agree that it’s not always a good idea to eat or drink while driving.

I don’t know, it’s The Sun. Best left ignored.

As far as I can see it’s somewhat open to interpretation as to if you were “distracted” or “not in control of your vehicle”

Pyr_Pressure , to news in AI-generated naked child images shock Spanish town of Almendralejo

For an AI generator to make convincing photos of CSAM, wouldn’t it have had to have access to real CSAM to “learn” how to make it?

Wouldn’t the creators of the generator then have to have had access to it / download it or whatever they do when they feed material to the algorithm?

drislands ,

Not necessarily. I’m only speculating, which I don’t relish, but I imagine the service isn’t explicitly designed with CSAM as the intended result – if I’m reading it right, it’s billed as “upload picture of clothed person X and received ‘naked’ picture of same person”, and is almost certainly trained on appropriately-aged pornographic material.

I don’t know the inner workings of technology like this, and I certainly don’t intend to critique the images talked about in this article, but the resulting picture doesn’t have to be an accurate representation of a minor’s body to be distressing to the people involved.

lud ,

Nah, I don’t think so. I haven’t tried and I won’t try, but these images are probably just made with inpainting with generic nsfw prompts.

If the AI was trained on enough nudity it would probably just scale it down to child size or whatever.

I can’t imagine there must be a huge difference in appearance.

I am just guessing though.

Pechente , to worldnews in Time to ditch Amazon Prime?

I canceled it at the beginning of the year. Im not missing anything and I try to diversify the stores I purchase from.

The only thing that sucks is when I HAVE to use amazon for something. They will nag you so hard to get prime. It only makes me avoid them even more.

theKalash ,

Why would you HAVE to use amazon?

whitepawn ,

If you live remote, say, an hour or more from real shopping and such it’s the way to get fast delivery on anything, though Walmart does ok with this, though their “fast” is fairly unreliable. (Great for front door delivery of kitty litter, dog food, etc)

But no, most people don’t need it because most people don’t live remote.

Mongostein ,

Wal-Mart’s not really any better than Amazon

Pechente ,

The fast shipping. Need something the next day? -> Amazon. No other online store can match how fast they are in my area.

Bitrot ,
@Bitrot@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

A lot of things offer free same day shipping for me now. I’ve gotten things three hours later for no extra charge.

I usually try to shop locally or at least a smaller online business, but if it’s a more expensive item and Amazon is cheaper, and I can still get it the same day or the next, Amazon usually wins out. One thing that has also bothered me is when I order directly from a company for more money and slower shipping and it’s still fulfilled by Amazon.

Gott ,
@Gott@lemmy.ml avatar

There have been many items I’ve looked at or bought, mostly from small-ish manufacturers, that are only available through amazon due to the manufacturer not have the resources to handle all the logistics and web store that come with selling through amazon. I do everything I can to avoid buying from them because I can’t stand their bull shit.

autotldr Bot , to worldnews in Time to ditch Amazon Prime?

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Amazon is set to introduce adverts to its Prime Video streaming service in 2024 as it seeks to put more cash into creating TV shows and films.

UK Prime customers, along with those in the US, Germany and Canada, will see ads early next year unless they subscribe for an “ad-free” option at an additional cost.

At the moment, a Prime subscription, which includes free one-day delivery on goods as well as access to its streaming service, costs £8.99 per month, or £95 a year, in the UK.

The company said it would get in touch with Prime members a few weeks before ads are introduced to show how to sign-up for the ad-free option if they wish to.

Live event broadcasts, like sports matches, will still include adverts even for those who sign up to the ad-free option.

Data previously released by analysts Kantar showed that people cut back on video streaming services in their droves last year as they sought out different ways to deal with the spike in the cost of living.

Orlin Roussev, Bizer Dzhambazov, Katrin Ivanova, Ivan Stoyanov, and Vanya Gaberova will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

They are accused of working on active operations in the UK and Europe and collecting and passing information to the Russian state.

Officers who searched properties in London and Norfolk occupied by three of the defendants - Mr Roussev, Mr Dzhambazov, 41, and Ms Ivanova, 31 - found allegedly fake passport and official identity documents for the UK, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Slovenia, Greece, and the Czech Republic.

The group are also accused of organising a surveillance operation in Montenegro which involved the creation of fake identification cards for journalists, including one in the image of Ms Ivanova.

Mr Roussev, whose most recent address is a seaside guesthouse in Great Yarmouth, also states he once acted as an adviser to the Bulgarian ministry of energy.

The pair, who moved to the UK around a decade ago, ran a community organisation providing services to Bulgarian people, including familiarising them with the “culture and norms of British society”.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

One of Australia’s richest men has sparked a global backlash after saying unemployment should double to remind arrogant workers of their place.

Speaking during a property summit this week, the 41-year-old said the Covid-19 pandemic had changed employees’ attitudes and work ethics for the worse - singling out builders as an example.

He claimed that shift is impacting productivity in the sector, which - combined with tougher regulations - is fuelling Australia’s housing shortage.

Shifting attitudes toward employment are also a matter of widespread discussion on social media, giving rise to hashtags like “quiet quitting”, a term meant to capture the decision to stop going above and beyond for bosses; and “lazy-girl jobs”, which refers to well paying, flexible positions that offer greater work-life balance.

Mr Gurner’s comments, which were shared by the Australian Financial Review (AFR) which hosted the summit, have drawn criticism on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), TikTok and LinkedIn.

It sees people on the streets and dependent upon food banks," Mr Wolahan told the AFR.

autotldr Bot , to science in Scientists grow whole model of human embryo, without sperm or egg

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The first weeks after a sperm fertilises an egg is a period of dramatic change - from a collection of indistinct cells to something that eventually becomes recognisable on a baby scan.

Instead of a sperm and egg, the starting material was naive stem cells - reprogrammed to gain the potential to become any type of tissue in the body.

Despite the late-night video call, I can hear the passion as Prof Hanna gives me a 3D tour of the “exquisitely fine architecture” of the embryo model.

The hope is embryo models can help scientists explain how different types of cell emerge, witness the earliest steps in building the body’s organs or understand inherited or genetic diseases.

There is even talk of improving in vitro fertilisation (IVF) success rates by helping to understand why some embryos fail or using the models to test whether medicines are safe during pregnancy.

Prof Alfonso Martinez Arias, from the department of experimental and health sciences at Pompeu Fabra University, said it was “a most important piece of research”.

Man Oprah really has started to get exposed for the child grooming piece of shit she is. She needs to go away.

ZC3rr0r , (edited )

There’s plenty stuff to criticise her for without having to bring up that completely unfounded sex trafficking story.

How about the fact that she helped popularize and legitimise Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop grift? Or that she gave doctor Phil a head start to his media persona and subsequent popularity? And then did it again with Dr Oz? And what about her help in legitimising Jenny McCarthy’s “vaccines cause autism” claims by lending her a global stage and audience for her wackjob pseudoscience? Or the time she legitimised cultist weirdo John of God? Or helped Tom Cruise deflect some serious allegations related to Scientology by allowing him to go bananas on her couch?

Like I said, there’s enough stuff she legitimately did to criticise her for without some fake news conspiracy bs.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Former US President Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty in his Georgia election fraud case, waiving the right to appear in court next week.

In total, Mr Trump faces 13 felony counts - including racketeering - for allegedly pressuring Georgia officials to reverse the results of the 2020 presidential election in that state.

Brian Tevis, an Atlanta attorney who represents one of Mr Trump’s co-accused, Rudy Giuliani, told CBS, the BBC’s US partner, that “99% of the time” defendants who are given the option choose to waive their arraignment.

Earlier this week, three other co-defendants in the case entered not guilty pleas, including former Trump attorneys Ray Stallings Smith and Sidney Powell, as well as former celebrity publicist Trevian Kutti.

Rudy Giuiliani, Mr Trump’s formal personal attorney, also plans to waive his arraignment in Fulton and plead not guilty, his spokesperson Ted Goodman said on Thursday.

Earlier in August, State Senator Colton Moore sent a letter to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, a fellow Republican, calling for a special session to impeach Ms Willis.

One member of the group, who calls himself Crush, told the BBC that Tuesday’s attack flooded X’s servers with huge amounts of traffic to take it offline - the same blunt and relatively unsophisticated hacking techniques for which the gang is known.

Another hacking group member - Hofa - said the so-called DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack was aimed at raising awareness about the civil war in Sudan which is “making the internet very bad and it goes down quite often for us”.

The gang has been accused by many in the cyber-security world of being a Russian cyber-military unit in disguise and causing cyber-chaos for the Kremlin under the cover of a foreign hacktivist outfit.

However, Crush explained that “a similar thing happened to our country and Russians stood with us so we wanted to pay them back”, referring to Russia’s support for the Sudanese government as it fights the ongoing civil war.

When challenged about the impacts on citizens, Crush defended the actions and said: “The reason we hit infrastructure is to teach the country and its rulers a lesson, and yes we have red lines, that is if our attacks harm a lot of innocents.”

Its most high-profile attack in June disrupted Microsoft services including Outlook and OneDrive, forcing the tech giant to issue a report with advice to customers on how to prevent being affected by the group.
